Sonya & Smoke confirmed? Just saw this but didn't want to create a whole thread for it.

Well the girl voicing Sonya confirmed she was doing it months and months ago, but I'm pretty sure the guy listed as Smoke is a hoax, cuz the dude has no other credits on his page BUT playing Smoke and he's listed as playing him in MK Rebirth too, and Smoke wasn't even IN that fanfilm, nor are there any plans right now to make a full length movie of it.

Now that you mention it, the guy does seem to be a hoax. Oh well, too bad.

And remember that Sonya wasn't even invited to MK1, she was a trespasser on the island. So technically she was never considered one of the greatest fighters in the world, this is a life she stumbled into. Sure, the movie and some trading card said Shang invited Kano so he could deliberately lure her to the tournament, but those are non-canon.

It was canon in the official comic [EDIT: that she was following Kano], and if you're going to invent contexts out of the text bios from the first game, it'd be just as reasonable to assume she was worthy of invitation in the first place. Orchestrated arrival, or not. Just like any success she had that brought her into the fold could continue without developing canonical mystic powers.

Ripping the heart out would be a killing blow, too, but Taven didn't manage to do that until the necessary meters were depleted/filled. That's an awfully clumsy distinction to make! Far too generous to convenient game direction!

... and clumsy distinctions bring us back to Johnny Cage and wondering why he would have mastery over chi projectile attacks. Good job, team!

No, it's not mentioned anywhere in there. I just re-read the thing to make sure and all Shang says is that he's forcing her to join the tournament because they caught her and her men following their ships to the island. It's never suggested in the book that Shang had her lured there on purpose.

I totally forgot about the countdown so I'm not too miffed about just having screens.

I'm not ungrateful tho, any new MK shizz is alrite by me.

Love the screens but Jax has replaced Johnny Cage as my 17th favourite character... sorry Johnny.grin

Has anyone notices how short Mileena's hair is in the new pic?
Its length reaches the mask level, but so far it had been longer, almost shoulder length.
What's up with that?

she is moving very fast during a teleport, thus her hair is moving. nothing more to it than that.

@ RazorsEdge:

^ This.

Mick pretty much nails the point regarding Sonya.

I'm not going to say it isn't possible, however, I am going to say nothing proves that the "Chi" story has been completely disregarded for characters like Sonya, Jax, Liu, and Johnny Cage

Well here's the thing: you're lumping all the Earth characters into the same boat there. Liu is a monk. He's trained his whole life with people who are all about chi. Johnny trained with the same sorts of people.

Sonya and Jax don't have origin stories like that. They're just...somehow naturally talented. Jax at least has his "world's strongest man" training to fill in the "how did he unlock his potential?" question. But Sonya, Jax, and Kano have something the martial-arts-origin characters don't have: access to advanced weaponry. I think their moves should reflect that more. That's why I prefer Jax's missiles to his Guile Sonic Boom thing, and why I wish Kano's knives were lightsabers like in MK1 and 3 instead of metal like they have been since the series went 3D. I just think the art direction should take more advantage of what makes each character unique.

You have really good and fair points, but, I guess it ends up being a personal preference. While I understand your preference for the "tech weapons technology" over the "magical chi" for these specific characters, I actually favor both but definitely prefer they stick to the original essence of the chosen warriors, the "chi". I wouldn't like it if they took that away from them. It really adds to their characters (that's why I love seeing those magical glows in Cage's, Sonya's, and Jax's attacks).

Like I said, Mick-Lucifer's response pretty much nailed it.

This doesn't change the fact that she was and is a Chosen Warrior. Invited or not invited it's heavily implied and assumed that Sonya was supposed to be in the tournament. After all this MK years and till this very day, Sonya is still the only chosen female character from Earth to fight in MK. That's gotta mean something as well.

RazorsEdge701 Wrote:
So the interpretation I prefer is that Sonya wasn't powered at first, more like Stryker, and she started out with tech and human limitations, and only gained magical/chi attacks like her Kiss of Death or the Vertical Bike Kick after she met Liu and Raiden at the island and began learning from them because that's what she needed to do to survive against all the other powered people. The way I see her, she didn't start out a chosen one, she became a chosen one after meeting Raiden and discovering all the secrets and magic.

I'm actually not opposed to this at all. But considering what you are saying, learning all those magical/chi attacks when she meets them kind of gives away the fact that she was a chosen warrior anyways. MK plays a lot with the whole "destiny" thing. Was it reeeeaaally "coincidental" that Sonya, a regular human who just happens to have some kind of powerful "magic" attacks and is qualified to fight for the existence of world, arrived to Shang Tsung's island just because? I don't think so.

Again, I'm not saying you are wrong or that I'm opposed to your ideas. But, I think it's pretty much obvious that Sonya was a Chosen Warrior as much as Liu Kang and Johnny Cage.

Which is not really a 100% valid response considering all the severe fatal damage that is inflicted to the characters in the game and they are still alive.

Yo know how many characters so far, use some sort of weapon? Well wouldn't it be awesome is Cage took out a douche bag and whacked you with it? Sorta like a hidden move/Easter egg. Cause it could become stupid if it was an actual special move. Just a thought, it really matches with his character also so it would fit.

I'm loving the effect on Johnny's Shadow Kick, it's nice to see the actual shadows back.

On the topic of chi and energy attacks, it appears that every human in MK can manipulate chi and energy. I mean you could argue that characters like Jax and Sonya are chosen warriors and are able to access power within themselves that others can't but what about characters like Hsu Hao, Kira, and Kobra? They certainly aren't chosen warriors or supremely disciplined monks or anything. All the regular humans in the MK universe can project energy or hurl themselves through the air and probably isn't anything special.

Actually aren't Mavado, Jarek, and Stryker the only human MK characters that can't manipulate chi?

Also I don't think Sonya or Jax were destined to become chosen warriors. They were placed in a situation where they handled themselves well and helped save Earthrealm and because of that Raiden saved them during MK3 when everyone had their soul stolen.
Seems like the only MK character destined to do something is Liu Kang.

Has anyone pointed out that Sareena is chained? And on the right you can see a female hand that might be Li-Mei. If this new MK game is only focusing on MK1-3, it would make sense to have Sonya chained or Jax but he is already confirmed as a playable character so that wouldn't make sense.

I still can't believe this is the only update they gave us after a wait of 20+ days...stupid countdown.

That's the second time.

Really bad.

And I'm not even mentioning the other annoying fails concerning the messed up FatalityFridays and MortalMondays.

They are really doing a poor job/execution with their marketing/promotion for this game (and to the fans).

I think they're doing fine, I'd rather have something spilled out rather than having nothing showing at all. Be thankful that they're actually showing something than nothing.

Loving the Cage pics, I think I'll actually play as him this time than ignore him in general. He seems like he'll be a fun character to play as in this game.

I agree that I rather have something than nothing. However, when they are sooo obviously supposed to show something (a countdown), and that something is implied to be a big thing (20+days countdown), this is just unacceptable and stupid. So, getting a lame "something" can sometimes be just as "whatever" as getting nothing.

I do love the pictures and I did love and enjoy Johnny's quotes in all of them, but, as wonderful as the screenshots are they are honestly not worth the 20+days countdown wait and the expectation it creates.

It's cheap and a big cheat. I'm almost positive they had another unprofessional problem with the update, reason why we only got those pics (and not even all of them were even working properly) and reason why 4 extra hours were added to the thing once it was finally done.

I have to disagree because that doesn't seem like they are doing fine, at all.
