MK9 is a reboot for mk1, mk2 & mk3 all in one game. There is no mk9 which I'm pissed at but you gotta do what you gotta do. I can't wait to buy the game for the ps3 system. And the game won't come out until 2011

If it's a reboot that takes place in the era between 1-3
then why are MK4-MK:A characters seen in stages?
Kira can be seen in the trailer.

Because those characters back-date to around MK 1-3. Each of the newbies had back stories in their respective appearance, though they were fairly vague - they didn't just come out of nowhere.
We're seeing these characters as probably backstory nods, or easter eggs.

Hopefuly they (post MK3 characters) are just placeholders and a tease to keep fans guessing.
If I had to guess, they didn't finish the models/designs for Blaze, Hornbuckle, Sonya, or Kano. So they threw in recycled models for the background characters.

I always figured they were just easter eggs you would see when playing against other players, or when playing arcade mode. And that they wouldn't show up randomly like that during Story Mode.

Because people want it to be a reboot, so by god (King!) it is a reboot.

Well judging by the teaser trailer, if it's not a reboot...it might as well be.
So we're either going backwards or we're standing in place.

I think it's going to be a retelling of the old story of Mortal Kombat.
And can i get a large image of your avatar of Daniel Plainview?

Because they're probably erasing them from entire MK canon by making them combatants that lost in MK. If it's a reboot that takes place in the era between 1-3
then why are MK4-MK:A characters seen in stages?
Kira can be seen in the trailer.

Because it's a reboot, not a remake. There's a difference. Reboot brings changes, a remake doesn't. That's IF this is a reboot. We still don't know for sure. They're probably just there for the fans, nothing to do with the story at hand.

I'm not convinced that it's a reboot.
all people are going with is
"OH HEY LOOK OLD CHARACTERS THAT KEEP APPEARING IN OTHER GAMES!! THIS MUST MEAN IT'S A REBOOT"

So Raiden, wearing his MK2 outfit, charging at Shao Kahn in Kahn's Arena, followed by footage of, exclusively, old characters wearing old costumes in old stages, and the title of the game has no number or subtitle, it's JUST "Mortal Kombat", that says "Post-Armageddon" to you?

Remember though, that trailer is an entire minute long. Surely it encapsulates the entire experience of a game that won't be released until next year.

Raiden has an established design which only deviated from when he went Dark, which was his old costume with black colours.
Kahn is an established villain, so he can fight Raiden. So?
Yeah because Reptile's costume is "old"
and the games haven't used a number since 4.

Yep. I look at Armageddon as equivalent to Crisis on Infinite Earths. This is the world as it is post Armageddon.

Except Crisis on Infinite Earths effectively erased all of DC's previous history and they started over....in essence, reboot.
But who knows, maybe....much like Power Girl....Li Mei & Kira are the only survivors of the pre-Armageddon universe; displaced by time and space.
Maybe that's why they're being held prisoner. They know too much.

Yes, but it's a reboot with an explanation. Not just thrown out there.

The Post-Crisis characters didn't know their world's history had been rewritten. Man of Steel and Batman: Year One were caused by Crisis and didn't have them looking back and remembering things they hadn't really done yet. Only stories set in the present day had them remembering Barry Allen was dead and they fought a guy named Anti-Monitor, but even then, no one was aware that originally, they had all been from different Earths that were merged.
So a Reboot and Post-Crisis are more or less the same damn thing. Either way you look at it, there's no way Raiden is going to be walking around in this game going "Hey, remember that time I was evil and Liu was a zombie and we all fought over climbing a pyramid?" The others would be like "What are you talking about? We just met."

Not really. Like I said, the difference is the explanation. The characters don't know the past, but the audience does.

Well you're just arguing semantics at that point. The audience always knows the past, that's actually what makes something a REboot as opposed to just "the first time". I saw and remember what happened in Ang Lee's Hulk, but Incredible Hulk is still a reboot.

Not really. The difference is that the new continuity would be part of the existing story rather than a reboot just being shit out by WB with no explanation.
It's "Armageddon caused this" as opposed to "We just gave up, here's a new take."
