Cyrax and Scorpion are the only 2 playable characters in Story Mode that are not on the side of Good(because they were Neutral at the time)
EDIT: Sorry about the double post

Liu Kang almost had Shang Tsung defeated, he was hit by a cheap shot from Quan Chi. He probably could have won had it been a fair fight.

What's even stranger is that in the original timeline, Kung Lao was defeated by Shang Tsung alone, even after training with Bo Rai Cho.

Story Mode is fucked up with the power scaling. How the hell did Sub-Zero beat both Goro and Kintaro? How did Sonya beat the original Sub-Zero when he was able to overpower guys like Quan Chi and Fujin in mythologies? Sindel killing everyone in the game? Stryker beating Ermac and Kintaro? Umm?

WOW! I managed to get responses from a couple heavyweight champions from around these parts. So cool....

@Ninja_Mime
Too true. The assault on Liu was more of a sneak attack. Nevertheless, both situations shared the similarity of 2 on 1. Also that 1 being a Shaolin Monk. It begs the question, did Liu know he was facing 2 men? I can envision the intro but I cant place whether he was fully aware of having to engage 2 opponents. One can also make the case that KL was prepared for the fight much like a boxer after an 8 week training program where as Liu had not been actively training (seriously) for an up coming challenge. There is much to analyze with this topic. Again, I find it very interesting.

@Subman799
I had absolutley no idea that KL was defeated by Shang in the original timeline. I had the impression that he was killed by Shao Kahn (in MK3) thus filling LK with the rage needed to finally vanquish the Emperor once and for all, effectively saving Earth from the invasion. Please, elaborate. I am an absolute sucker for MK lore. (Which is THE reason why I love this site so much. The stories and theories are fantastic)

The SZ defeat at the hands of Sonya REALLY rubs me the wrong way. In fact, SZ's treatment is completely BS to any SZ fan. Do you realize that we dont even get to play as THE REAL SZ in story mode? The REAL SZ gets eliminated from the tourney in his first fight by Sonya WTF??!! We're talking about the SZ that kicked so much ass in MKM SZ....and he gets wrecked in his first go around of the tourney?!!! UGH utter BS.

However, Sindel's best impression of the Hulk, is something I can handle. Recieving Shangs powers from Shao Kahn, makes it concievable that she could pull off a HULK SMASH. I mean, she was already a badass bitch BEFORE she was given Shang-roids.

The whole Stryker bit seemed to me like NRS was doing everything they could to elevate him to a Liu Kang level. If you think about it. It would be interesting to have a regular cop who has no idea about MK being so badass. To me, he's what you call a "sleeper" in a tournament. The one no one thinks could pull it off but in fact has the skill to unleash some serious championship level ass kicking.

I also realize that youre questions may have been retorical. I just couldnt miss out on responding to a couple badasses like you two gentlemen: Ninja_Mime and Subman799.

I found this glitch yesterday.

I've done the pit night double flawless and a stage fatality with witch/santa flys across the moon and you fight classic Reptile two times. Well, last night I did it at a friends house and he turned gray. I don't understand it? I found this really interesting, as I've done it at my house and he was still the original green. And the treasure chests in the krypt Smoke/Sub-Zero being friends.

Also,
-Mileena's hair gets stuck in the clothing around her neck sometimes.
At first I thought she had a different hairstyle, but it fixes itself eventually.
-Even if you perform the Scatterbrained fatality on Kenshi on the correct side so his one eye is showing, it still doesn't fall out.
-Kenshi's one visible eye does not blink; it sort of jitters.. wow
-The (previously) changing posters on the rooftop, street, or in the subway (the Warrior's Way one is gone now - I haven't seen it in forever.)
-Rain's X-Ray can chain into a few more hits (duh!).
-Kenshi has his old 2,2,4 (sword) combo back, though it's now F+2,2,B+2

That's all for now.

Noob Saibot claims in the Graveyard to Cyber Sub-Zero:
We share blood - we're not brothers.

The funny thing is that it is vice versa actually: CSZ and Noob do not share blood but they are brothers. After their physical changes, Bi-Han's blood turned into black and Kuai Liang's blood into blue.

A goodly number of chain combos are directly inspired by old UMK3 dial-a-combos. Scorpion has one that has 4 kicks in it, if I recall correctly. Smoke's pop-up is derived from his old HK, D+LP, HP combo, and Kano has one a la UMK3 where he headbutts you before a pop-up uppercut.

In the Armory, if you fight on either the extreme left or the extreme right of the sage, you can see the original MK logo beyond the wall.

I think what could have been really cool, if they managed to pull this off perfectly with Reptile's classic fatality, is when he performs it in the Armory and the floor starts moving.

That would have been perfect.

That you can low blow anyone now. In MKII it was a timed thing with Tsung and Cage, but now you could do it on anyone. It gets me how the cyborgs would feel anything. Aren't they missing that part of their body, or doesn't the armor protect it? grin

I also like all the phrases Cage yells after certain moves or combos. The funniest is before he does the Babality. The "Don't Hate" is hillarious.

- Kitana's & Jade's relationship is notably more stronger and prevalent in this game.

- In Story Mode, during the Church Onslaught, Jade can be seen welding her Deception Bojitsu (staff).

- Both of Kitana's and Jade's alternate costume concepts are quite similar. Their hair are now braided, their clothes are a bit more revealing, and their mask-less.

- Jade is the only "ninja" girl who actually holds her weapon. The others either conjure them or have them sheathed.

- The head that Kintaro crushes in his intro can be seen in the The Pit Bottom Stage on one of the spikes. I think its a nod to the original Pit Bottom which contained the heads of the staff members.

- The Scene where the Heroes of Light clap at the Wu Shu Temple was turned into a GIF by Keith.

- In The Armageddon Opening for Story Mode, the placements of the dead characters is a continuity nod towards the Intro for MK: Armageddon.

- Kabal sports the mask from his Alternative Costume from MK: Deception.

- Scorpion doesn't have flesh since he is a spectre!

- Noob's primary is a nod to his beta design from MK: D, which was later turned into the original character, Havik, who also appears in Noob's Arcade Ending.

- A Female Tarkartan is shown in Baraka's Ending!

- I believe Stryker being so strong in the Story Mode is a nod to his high tier status from MK 3.

I had the impression that SZ was eliminated by Sonya. I also have the impression that Raiden was ALSO eliminated by Sonya. Here is why:

During the first tournament, soon after when Cage finds out that Raiden is actually a God, he mentions Raiden could "win this thing, no problem". But Raiden responds by clarifying that he could only participate if he was directly challenged. I have this impression because he was already "eliminated" unfortunately having to give up his tournament eligibility to not harm an Earth realm warrior. A very unfortunate thing for Earth realm but of course we had Liu Kang to finish it out.

There is a possibility that Raiden was never supposed to fight and was only in a scrap because Sonya literally challenged him. Yet, this is not specified.

But I digress...On to SZ and Scorpion.

My theory is that since SZ had lost his first match to Sonya, he was the first Lin Kuei member to be eliminated from the tournament and only participated in a future match because Scorp had a major hard on to challenge him. Thus, Sub could only participate if he was directly challenged.

Nevertheless, SubZero, the Indiana Jones of Mortal Kombat, the adventurer who took on Earth realm Gods like Fujin, and others including Scorpion, Quan Chi, and Shinnok, got his ass handed to him by Sonya. This speaks volumes on sonyas fighting ability, but when you look at the overall treatment of the OG SZ (and I dont mean Noob, I mean the guy that shoots ice not clouds) one could realize that he was shafted.

Great job, you guys! Keep them coming!

I really need to go through the game to make a perfectly valid list of everything I want to include. It goes from awesome things like MK2 and MK3 victory animations inserted in round wins and the challenge tower as well as references to the movies, shaolin monks, etc.

Sooooo much stuff!

Sub-Zero (Bi-Han) didn't lose to Sonya, after pestering (like the first movie) he was nowhere to be seen, Sub-Zero's (alive as Bi-Han) only lost fight was against Scorpion.

I would definately agree with everyone's comments on this site.

Attention to detail being the most important thing. For instance, reptile's spit stays on his hand was a big reason why I like reptile in this game in comparison to previous games. The blood on Kintaros foot stays throughout the game. The puke etc...are big pluses for me.

One thing i would say gets overlooked at times is the mouth animation when the player has a mask, for example when Kitana or any of the female ninjas speak you can see their mouth moving. Pretty cool how the new engines work.

Though I would get annoyed at it at times, I liked how Shoa Kahn would taunt you throughout the match when he is seated, gives it that more authentic 'vibe' and feel.

The player victory animations definately are a huge plus...love how rains victory animation is a homage to the stance he did in UMK3 and the whole rain falling from the sky. Would be cool in the next installment if the camera screen gets wet and drops of rain fall on the camera screen.

Kano having hair and looking like Kano from the movie...I like Kano with hair then Kano being bald, but that's just my preferenece

Johnny Cage looking like old Johnny Cage, having the sunglasses. Jax with his purple pants. Those are the little things in my mind. Just anything that pays homage to the good ol' days of when mortal kombat first came out.

The nostalgia factor is huge and a tribute to the past is a big thing for me. I appreciate it when I am reminded of the simple things of mortal kombat.grin

Oh and hands down by far the best stage for me is the Street Stage. There is so much going on in that stage, just seeing the cars going into the Chicago river, I believe it is the Chicago river, though the story says New York, especially since the team is from Chicago. The Helicopter fights between the Helicopter and the Dragon...that big huge Monster fighitng the tanks...

what would've been the icing on the cake for me would be in the subway stage, seeing people inside the subway cars, making it look a bit more real and authentic, that would have made it the best stage i.m.o...
