No more new characters until they develop the existing ones properly please!!!

And, yes that is an awful name.

There are so many unexplored opportunities here, especially considering the rebooted timeline. Taven hasn't been awoken, therefore he hasn't killed Wu Lae yet. (one example of many)

Killing Wu Lae was optional. ..and a total dick move since Taven says he's gonna let him go.

Hornbuckle was relegated to generic soldier status. He was just one of Onaga's holy men. So having him would be like having a generic Lin Kuei soldier. It'd be Liu Kang without fire.

But since none of Onaga's holy men have been characters, Hornbuckle could be revealed to be the best or the leader, like Sub-Zero is to the Lin Kuei or Shang Tsung is to the Shadow Priests.

If Quan Chi, one of the prime evils in MK, takes his shirts and robes off for fighting one would expect Hornbuckle to do the same for utility. I would've seen Hornbuckle over Skarlet in the new game. I recall that the lady in red was initially being called Skarlett with a double T but apparently NeRdS decided to add their touch to it until making the character official.
The story aspect of Skarlet is somewhat dull currently. You know what? I was thinking that in MK9, Mileena should have remained having her old backstory and the "new Mileena" background should've been given to Skarlet who is also, after all, a female ninja in a shade of red (scarlet). It would've stirred the pot a little and made Kitana and the fans happier.
What comes to Hornbuckle's name, while it's been considered temporary, I don't think that the developers would change it should he once return. And I think he should indeed return, the ninja palette-swap well has been consumed excessively already – he doesn't have to resemble Liu Kang either aside having no shirt, plus having his TM green color. MK9 PS Vita did despite the current ninja amount give a green light for Tremor. Torch, Glacier... They were rather generic names and "Torch" had its copyright issues. Hornbuckle is an original name compared to the other media and the character is one of the most known out of the "MK-characters-that-have-yet-to-make-it" list. I'd see him bundle with the Dragon King.
The rank of a soldier doesn't take out of his viability as a future character. There's a plenty of characters in the series that aren't the representatives of any certain group including all the Lin Kuei before Sektor Senior's death, Reptile, Jade, Dairou and Sheeva. Some of them are just desperado. I'm just saying that being the leader doesn't instantly mean you're also the best fighter except maybe in the animal kingdom for the most part. I do however see where some of you are coming from when you expect every character to be high in rank to enter the character roster because that was the mindset of the developers: they seemed to come up with a new faction for every other new DA–D character they created (whose leaders they were "essentially") but as we saw, that didn't guarantee their likeableness or quality and now we've got a bunch of these slightly "useless" factions.

Taven's line, "You are free to go." was sarcastic. Also if you choose not to fatality Wu Lae just watch and eventually he will fall down & evaporate into fire like any other dazed enemy in MKA Konquest.

I was just trying to make a point of restoring/improving existing characters. I picked Wu Lae purely by chance, but thinking about it we already know that: He and his clan the Tengu have a distinct look, a location, an uneasy history with the Lin Kuei, and that Wu Lae's signiture weapon is a giant death-style scythe. All this is just itching to be built upon.

As another example, what about the Ice Beast Monstrosity as a new sub-boss character?

What about the MK team FINALLY expanding on the Sareena/Kia/Jataaka/Quan Chi storyline?

Sarcastic? There's no "Now that you've apologized for attacking me and provided me with helpful information, thanks but I'm totally gonna kill you anyway" tone in his voice, man. He's sincerely letting Wu Lae go.

It just happens that the player can then just up and decide "Nope, I'm a liar!" and you even get rewarded with a treasure chest for it, lol.

I've always liked hornbuckle I don't think there's any reason to dismiss him because "he'd be another liu kang" we could have said the same for skarlet before she was made into a legit character. Hornbuckle already has a background story I don't know if its real or fan made but to me it shouldn't matter. Yes he's a background character and a palette swap so was skarlet so was ermac, these qualities should not be used to dismiss the idea. People not many I'm sure but there are some myself included who like him so that alone should grant him his legitimacy into a real playable character. We know his background he is a holy man that worked for onaga some believe he could be related to liu kang or even a clone or a descendent. He could be made into an evil parallel of liu kang. There is a lot of promise for him story wise atleast, more so then skarlet had in my opinion because I don't think she had any fan made story. The same could be said for my favorite and main character ermac who at the time of mk1-mk3 was just based around rumors.

Just give us some Onaga zealot who wears a bit of green and goes more-or-less bare-chested with a completely new name, reference his capture of Blaze, and we're good. Doesn't need to keep the horrid name.or even resemble Liu Kang.

Uh, yeah it does.

The inclusion of rumor-made characters is one of the things that makes Mortal Kombat Mortal Kombat. I'm always geeked about which rumor will become true next.

I'm digging on the Lady in Purple. grin

Also, I wouldn't mind seeing Hornbuckle, as long as they do him serious good. He's not exactly one of the better rumors.

You can get with 'This'...

"Because not every single background element and fan made fantasy needs to become a character."

Or you can get with 'That'...

"No more new characters until they develop the existing ones properly please!!! "

I think you'll get with 'This', for 'This' is where it's at...

I didn't necessarily mean ALL of them. But now that you mention it, even more appearences of background chars would be good, just to show that they're not forgotten, and bring the best ones to the fore.

Oh sure,sure.
I suppose next they should make DLC of that Dead Pool Oni...?
Or perhaps someone at the bottom of The Pit as Downloadable Content...?
and of course, not too far away will be that "Lady in Grey"...

I SAY...we focus on the here and now, get the main chars we "Know" all down...THEN...we can introduce some new guys...and gals,
and hopefully...NO MORE NINJA CHARS FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!!! furious
but atleast that could mean some chars in the background you found. grin

thats just my 2 cents, hope it all makes sense... grin

I'm not really getting why some are saying that there shouldn't be any new characters until the old ones have been worked with.

In all honesty, they've all been worked with, and whether or not it's good enough is a matter of opinion.

With the exception of Skarlet, who isn't really new, we haven't had any new characters in six years. Quite frankly, we need some fresh blood, and I do not want to wait until we've been through the entire MK story again before we get them.

I'm seriously hoping all the characters who died in MK2011 stay dead in MK10, so we can get some new folks to fight with.

Let's be real here, do we really want a repeat of rosters until we've reached Armageddon for a second time?

Actually, yes. I want to see LI Mei, Bo' Rai Cho, Tanya, Reiko, Sareena, Fujin, Nitara, Drahmin, Hsu Hao, Frost etc. Couple them with the fighters from MK9 still alive - Quan Chi, Raiden, Cage, Sonya, Reptile, Scorpion, Kenshi, Skarlet, and resurrect the rest in some kind of story mode. This is the perfect time to reintroduce the other 'background' characters we know to be around at the time - dark priests, zombies, whatever, could be seen to be doing something. The mythos of Kochal could finally be expanded upon in another side challenge, for example.

If they wanna make Hornbuckle as it says as one of Onaga's holy men, he should be a part of the Great Kung Lao's past.

whats good enough IS a matter of onion, and in MY onion, theres some things not quite ripe...hehehaha

sure a new char can come n have some fun, im ALL 4 new chars
BUT why should they be served the spoils of someone elses war...?

lets end this 1...then start a fresh NEW One, with new blood, new spines, new hearts, new unique ways to take the body apart.

besides the old story is already halfway done, it wont be long now before we get a new one.

Yea you dont want to wait....well, guess what?...and while your waiting(hehea) for the new story and chars to become avalible...
The old ones can stay dead, sure. still doenst mean they wont be playable...

(Oh SCORPIOOOONNNN!!!)

You know...when someone brings up the 'evil clone' thing, it changes things. Hornbuckle could be one of two things in my opinion. He could be a resurrected ancestor of Liu Kang's, originally an Outworld pyromancer who came to Earth and had a lineage formed from him there. He could have preceded the Great Kung Lao in the family tree. Either that or he is the resurrected Liu Kang, a scenario which holds two interesting stories I've thought about. One could be that he has been corrupted by his resurrection, and he's NOT a zombie, but rather, his soul is corrupted and he claims his allegiance to the Dragon King for bringing him back to life. As a tribute he changes his color to green and fights with Blaze and yadda yadda yadda. Another could be that he is a clone of Liu Kang designed to infiltrate Raiden's forces and act as a double agent. Oh, imagination, you never fail me.
