I think Mileena was quite literally trolled in MK9.

A character whose entire reason for existence is to gain power and respect in whatever way she can because she's jealous of her princess sister. Somewhere in that backstory is at least a moderate justification for her more revealing look in MK Deception. Moderate, because really that was as far as they could take Mileena fan service without it being absolutely ridiculous.

If MK9 was the internet and Mileena has had an ongoing thread about her political campaign (maniacal scheme) for Outworld/Edenia/An all powerful Army/Kitana's Life/Braaaiiins for the last decade, NRS just waltzed in and posted rumors about her looking for a quickie in an airport bathroom and showed everyone the pictures of her dick she sent to her mistresses.

I agree with the majority of the responses here. I'll try to keep my post as short as possible or else I'll never be able to finish ranting:

Trolled to the point of being ruined:

- Mileena and Kitana:

Yes, their retcon is probably one of the stupidest and lamest things to have ever happened in the history of the most terrible decisions which concern MK.

Story points aside, Mileena's overall character is not the problem, the problem is that we saw nothing of what made her so damn amazing in MKD and MKA. I love the childish and sexy-psycho wicked personality, I do, but, I just wish we could have seen her grown into something more by the end...

As for Kitana, like everyone said, she comes off as weak and unforgettable, nothing like the Kitana you would have expected from MK2 and even MKDA. At least she showed some toughness in the beginning, her whole conversation with Smoke was a real eye-roller.

- Shang Tsung:

How dare they...everything that made Shang Tsung special pretty much ended with the beginning of MK2 (in storymode). They made him weak in favor of the annoying Quan Chi. His role was diminished and pretty much made unimportant after MK1 ended. A real shame.

- Cyber Sub-Zero:

Not a personal problem for me, but, to ignore the fact that a vast majority of the fan base hated this is to play dumb. This was terrible (no matter how cool his cyborg suit looks).

Trolled to the point of great disappointment

- Quan Chi: WTF is he doing everywhere? hated this.

- Everyone who died by Sindel except Nightwolf.

- Baraka, Sheeva and Reptile for being there just to look like pretty (or ugly) punching bags.

- Goro, Kintaro, and Ermac:

All super powerful 'boss' characters that came off way too weak (despite their great intros to the story, eyc). The Shokans barely had a presence, and as bad ass as Ermac was, well, he seemed just as "weak" as Tsung, imo.

- Kabal:

Ugh, nothing memorable about him at all. A real shame how they changed him.

- The Cyborgs being turned into Cyborgs:

The way it happened. So fast, so, simple, so...boring.

The ones I don't understand made some lists

- Kung Lao
- Stryker

Ignoring the fact that both die, these 2 characters were treated fantastically with lots of good screen time (Stryker being the more memorable of the two....I barely remember what Kung lao did).

I think that was the point being made, Kung Lao went from an important character in the old timeline to being in just a couple scenes and being the first good guy to get bumped off in the new timeline.

So, I think we're all in agreement that MK9's Story Mode anally raped the Mortal Kombat storyline we all fell in love with.

I hope NRS has read every thread, no, every POST that puts down their pathetic story and they seriously rethink what they'll do for MK10.

MK9 needs to be a "what if"

Since they're not going to be working on MK10 any time soon, they have plenty of time to reconcile that shitty story. They already hit rock bottom... so whatever they do couldn't possible be any worse. Even if they want to continue onto MK4's crap with Shinnok for an MK10, then at least MK11 should be the REAL reboot or some other continuation of MK where all these poor mistakes are forgotten.

I just want to point out that lot of people on the Internet are far too obsessed with trolls, referring to anyone or anything they don't like as trollish. In MK9's case, there wasn't that much trolling as far as I'm concerned. Many mistakes on NRS' part were obviously that, mistakes. No need to throw the troll card.

Now, with that said, if there is any character in this game I'd consider trollish (not trolled), or close to it even if it was unintentional, it'd be Scorpion, thanks to his chapters from both of the latest MK games. Wow, if it's not NRS trying to sell Scorpion as uber-cool, then I don't know what it is. Scorpion defeating Kung Lao (yes, I know he wasn't as experienced at that point, but still), Nightwolf, Cyrax and Sektor (simultaneously to top it off), Superman, Wonder Woman and the Joker, as if that half-wit even deserved a victory over the Clown Prince of Crime. Funny how every single one of these characters save Sektor also got chapters of their own.

It's like NRS was trying to compensate for Scorpion's first victory (and for a long time his only one) being ultimately pointless as Bi-Han was not only resurrected as a wraith but embraced his fate (Ha!). Now that I think about it, Scorpion was trolled, heh heh heh. Yeah, they were definitely trying to make up for that. Anyway, my issue isn't whether or not Scorpion could beat any of these characters as he most certainly could, it's that he didn't deserve to in my opinion.

So there you go. Not even Motaro's pitiful death, which was preceded by a massacre of his design, was trollish in my mind, as NRS wasn't trying to spite those who liked Motaro, they just screwed up. Scorpion's chapters feel like NRS wanting to make sure you do not view him as second-rate. Even when he's secondary storywise. You won't see Baraka, Reptile Kintaro etc receive the same treatment. Now that I think about it, I agree with anyone saying they were trolled. Because of the hypocrisy surrounding Scorpion, one of the most glorified lackeys of all time.

Pretty much the worst thing was the Kitana/Mileena retcon.

I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall for the brainstorming session at NRS when they were like "Lets just completely change everything that has been established about their back story and make it lame and worthless."

I know its been said and ranted over and over, but c'mon, it deserves an endless rant. The original Kitana/Mileena story and rivalry was one of the iconic things in MK.

Kitana's personality in the beginning of story mode was good, she was mysterious at first and then when she had speaking parts she seemed like an arrogant princess, perfect, but as the story progressed she became this weak damsel in distress. She was about to kill Shang Tsung after the end of the first tournament, then during Sub-Zero's chapter she suddenly has some guilty conscience and cant kill some random guy. Wtf is that? Shes been an assassin her whole life c'mon NRS. I do like how she was referred to as "princess of Outworld" that kind of cleared up a debate about whether or not she was considered princess under Khan's ward.

Mileena's personality was pretty much butchered. I do like the slight craziness, but she should have retained her cunning and intelligence. Now she seems just like a puppet for Shao Khan.

I much preferred the original Kitana/Mileena story. Instead of completely ruining it, NRS should have used this opportunity to clear up all the speculated aspects of their story and rivalry. Like, Kitana was the favorite and Mileena was the red-headed step child and was jealous of Kitana and the affection she got.

I think an interesting twist would have been if maybe Mileena somehow found out about Kitana not being Khan's real daughter and revealed it to her causing Kitana to confront Khan and possibly turning on him.

I agree that MK9 should be a "what if". I don't think we're that lucky though.

I agree that they've hit rock bottom as well. I mean really if this story has to be their worst, so there is nowhere to go but up. They can hopefully redeem themselves somewhat in MK10. Although I will never ever forget them turning Sub-Zero into a cyborg, and the people who so easily want to replace him with Bi-Han.

I fear in the next game though the others may just stay dead and they are going to try and make everyone post MK3 seem more important than they really are. If they do that, well then yeah I guess the story can suck worse than it already does.

Also, I have to agree somewhat. I like Scorpion I do. However, he really is a glorified lackey. He deserved no more glory in this game than Reptile, Ermac, or anyone else who got shafted. I mean really, wasn't he a bad guy for the most part in this story too? Why is he like the only bad guy who got a chapter? Besides maybe Cyrax, and that's not cyrax's fault. Seriously, knowing that Sub-Zero was going to get turned, I loved watching him beat Scorpion's a** one good time. Scorpion never has to worry about anything bad happening to him. Meanwhile, everyone else gets a huge shaft up their a**. Those bastards.lol

In general though. The guys who got trolled the hardest.

Shang Tsung. By far. By far! It was ridiculous how bad he was made to look in this game.

Sub-Zero is next to me. I'm sorry but having your insides ripped out and turned into a cyborg when everyone knows what a future the character had in front of him. It was just a dick move. They shouldn't have done it. End of story.

Mileena was definitely next. There is no need for explanation there. Her and Kitana's relationship is ruined.

Also, a shout out to one more. Raiden. Whether he was an idiot in the future for sending himself such a vague message, or an idiot in the past for making dire judgements on such vague messages. He's still an idiot. No way to spin it. Raiden is an idiot. He's supposed to be an all knowing God like mentor. How the hell did this happen?

It's not that she had her backstory changed per se... It's that it negated everything that people used to like about her for the sake of "ease of story"...

They could have easily had her alongside Kitana and Jade... a few sideways glances no big whoop "grr i'm scary"... They could have easily had Kitana find the aborted Mileena clones in the Flesh Pits if she had to "discover" the secret, and have a confrontation between the two...

But they didn't... The route they took was simplistic, and what it took away from Mileena VS Kitana was any sense of WEIGHT. Them calling each other "sister" has no meaning for either of them. They have no connection, no hatred. THey're just people who have the same hair colour and body side now... ('cos let's face it, Mileena looks nothing like Kitana anymore).

That's what irked me and why I agree that Mileena got trolled... Anything that could have given her weight is gone, and she became just another (admittedly pretty cool) punching bag. Sure, a lot more has been made out of Mileena's headspace by fans than perhaps is canon, but that's no reason for the creators to just say "aw fuck it" and get lazy.

I don't care much about the story since MKD, but it seems like all characters were trolled. They broke the feeling i had playing the DEMO in the gameplay aspects and that for many characters i suppose. And even though the twist about Raiden screwing up and the deaths of the good guys brought something different, the old games were better than that in all aspects imo.

Actually, I'd say sticking it to the fanfic writers is an *excellent* reason to do that.

MK9: Sat there and got her ass kicked. And had a (pretty hilarious) joke ending.

Reptile. Loses in the first fight to a guy who has no clue what's going on. Then loses some more.

Scorpion. Quan Chi's bitch. Fuck you Quan Chi. Fuck you, you Pillsbury doughboy looking peice of shit. Die in a fucking slow painful death you asshole. I'm not even a Scorpion fan, I just hate that waste of a roster space. I hope Shinnok tortures Quan Chi to death for failure one day.

The Mileena retcon was my favorite part of the MK9 story, not kidding.

Their story was so blurry back in MK2, They're sisters?......I think. But they kinda hate each other? Spy on each other? One of them has fangs for some reason?

Mileena being a cloned created by Tarkatan blood as means to replace Kitana without Outworld denizens realizing was simple, to the point and all made sense. It was the best and most effective ''connecting the dots'' moment in MK9.

It also made her childish personality make sense and while she was a bit one-dimensinal, I think they did her justice with her more dark evolution in MKX, so I don't see all the complaints are all about. But then most fans don't want Reptile to be a reptile.....sooo, I don't know.

Hell, on top of my head I can name like 5 classic characters that have been fucked with WAY MORE in story modes than Mileena.
