Realistically he could just go invisible still rendering his mask pointless.

Well there's nothing wrong with double layering a disguise. Staying invisible might be a strain for him, since he loses it every time he gets hit and his concentration breaks. Also, it gives him the element of surprise and intimidation if even when his opponent can see him, they still don't know what he is and, thinking he's a human, underestimate him.

Personally, like I said before...I think the disguise only works for MK1 and maybe 2. After that, the cat's already out of the bag so there's no point using it anymore.

Reptile's look/design is one of those things I just can't get past MK9.

For being "the" game that was all about bring back MK to life, the job they did in the costume design department is beyond atrocious, disappointing, uninspired, uncreative, and absolutely boring. Sure, this does NOT apply to all the character designs (there are some super highlights such as Ermac's, Sonya's alternate, Liu Kang's, Kenshis', etc), but, I feel like it applies to most of the characters in the game, Reptile Included.

All that being said, I hope they focus on his absolute best 2 designs: the ever so glorious Shaolin Monks costume and the freaking scary cool MK4 design.

Wow. Way to list his two WORST costumes. His MK9 design was alright, his alternate though, that was just perfect.I'd like to see where they take his design for MK10. The evolution of Reptile over the years has seen some great designs (MK2, MK4 alt, MKDA, MK9 alt) and some really bad ones (MKDA alt, MK4 primary, MKSM), but I think it'll be interesting to see what else they can do. I'm having a hard time imagining something new and exciting for Reptile at this point. Maybe (hopefully) they'll just build on what they have.

Personally, I would think that his MK9 Alt is his best costume ever...if not for the stupid gold snake ornaments on his shoulders.

As it is, my fave is MKSM.

I don't know why were the ninjas' masks getting hated by fans/gamers in this game. I always heard and still hear complains about them making the characters look like birds, but hell I found them really stylish and Reptile's is not an exception.

Speaking of MK9's art direction, I don't think the series has ever hit such a low point with Kitana as it did with her most recent design. I don't know why, but she hasn't really seen good days since like forever. I know you guys have been complaining a lot over the years, but unlike many things, Kitana hasn't improved and there are no signs of her getting better just like how the team keeps using that infamous Sub Zero's mask.

Most if not all of the costumes in this game were atrocious. If anything I think NRS's art designers are getting worse and worse and they REALLY need to hire some new people.

Am I the only one who LIKES Kitana's MK9 design? I think it fits her rather well. I prefer her MK2 design overall, but I like the MK9 design. Her hair looks lovely on the render but rather ridiculous in gameplay, though.

Hehe, like queve, my favorite Reptile designs are his MKSM and MK4 designs.

MKDA is by far my least favorite.

I generally don't like animal characters in fighting games, especially the ones in Tekken. God I'd blow up those with nuclear bombs. I'd like Tekken more if there weren't kangaroos, bears, pandas and all that shit. They really ruin the game for me (as well as male characters' bad hairstyles lol). Lizardman from SoulCalibur is also one of my least favorite characters in that franchise. No wonder I don't like Reptile's MKDA look.

I'm very partial to the Lizardman look, myself. While I never hated the MK4 design, I was never too impressed with it. Shaolin Monks was probably his best.

Thought his MK9 design was all right for both costumes. Nothing amazing, nothing revolting about either. I do miss the days when he tried to disguise himself as a human, though. I'd like to see them try that angle out again at some point, perhaps have him change his skin color similar to an actual chameleon's ability.

I'm assuming no Mists of Pandaria for you, eh?

At least I'm happy to know that there are people on here that don't like his Deadly Alliance look...

Whilst nothing seminal isn't coming in the following text I'mma respond.

I'm not certain whether or not the new timeline has a consistent devolution seeing Reptile was a humanoid at no point of the story mode – just in his alternative costume

Again, all MK9 did is retcon out the disguise. The way he looks in MK4, MKSM, and MK9 is the way his species has always looked naturally, underneath the human ninja costume he wore in MK1 thru 3. (Except of course for having only 3 fingers in MK4.) That's their true form when there's no devolution involved.
And just for the record, the word "humanoid" isn't interchangeable with the word "human". He IS humanoid in MK9, because his body is human-like in shape and he walks bipedal.
Zmoke Wrote:
but Quan Chi summoned a big snake in the end of it which could possibly have a connection to the naming of the realm

Okay, I thought the MK:DA version with a tail could have been the ultimate version. "Humanoid" / = / "Human" I know, I think I had just read some MK Wikia before I wrote that (it's still valid to call him that; just not informing).

Although "Human Reptile", nor "Human Smoke" nowadays for that matter, isn't strictly correct seeing Reptile is never a human, always a humanoid – sometimes more, sometimes less. "Human Reptile" is still practical.
Humanoid = like a human being in appearance

That whole episode shows Quan Chi having the snake as some sort of wizard's familiar that turns into his belt and into a staff and stuff like that. The snake has no connection to Zaterra, which is just a dead, barren realm he travels to, to acquire the magic gem he uses to mess with the heroes.

This is probably far-fetched but couldn't it be that the barren realm a.k.a. Zaterra is as it is in the episode because Shao Kahn had once destroyed all life i.e. Saurians from there long time ago in the DotR canon?

RazorsEdge701 Wrote:

I just checked that Zaterra (with Saurians) was also shown in Mortal Kombat: Conquest that aired a year before John Tobias's departure.

Where'd you check, the MK wikia? Because I read that there too, but I don't recall the word "Zaterra" ever actually being spoken in any of those episodes where it shows Reptile's people's home, and we all know how inaccurate that site can be. Someone could have posted in the article that their swamp was "Zaterra" as an assumption, because that's what it's now called in the games, not because it was spoken in the show.
But I'm in the midst of reacquiring Conquest so at some point this week I'll watch and see for myself if they say it on the show or not.

Yeah, it may be that the realm's name was never mentioned though it likely had the characteristics of Zaterra. That and at least Wikipedia indicated that Tobias probably departed after the "Zaterra" episode aired.

Nonetheless, take your time to find out how it ultimately was in the episode. Although the episode wouldn't necessarily invalidate the etymology possibility of Zaterra it would still matter a lot to the word.

Naw, they give Zaterra a quick little backstory in that episode and it has nothing to do with Raptors. Also, the realm they show looks nothing like a swamp. It's more like the dead ruins of a generic fantasy kingdom.

I meant to have watched and settled this by now...but by the time I got around to acquiring the full season of Conquest, I was really not in the mood to sit through the show, lol. I'm sure I'll get around to it...eventually.
