Ever since the first Mortal Kombat movie I've wondered if the developers ever thought about using Robin Shou as Liu Kang in the games.
It always seemed pretty obvious to me that he had a bit of influence of Liu Kangs look after Mk2, with the Longer hair in Mk3 and all.
To me it would be really awesome if they actually used his likeness for Liu Kang in Mk9, if he's in it of course. Though it would be pretty weird if Johnny Cage and Kung Lao was in and not Liu Kang. What do you guys think?

Haha, I never get why he gets so much hate from some people.
Sure he may resemble Bruce Lee a bit especially in the first one, but I think he's moved further away from that as the games moved on.
Every story needs a hero.
Would be kinda cool if they maybe aged him a bit or something for this one I think. But as all the other characters seem to have their classic look I doubt it.

I'm not a big fan of his. I think he's OK, but I don't want him to ever come back.

Liu was already based more on Robin Shou in MK vs DCU. He didn't even make the Bruce Lee noises for any move except the Bike Kick. I kinda hated that.

Why? The only reason people liked him making those sounds was because they made fun of them, is the impression I got anyways.
Didn't bother me that they got rid of them at all.

Yes, but it's more of a "laughing with him, not at him" sort of thing. It was one of his redeeming traits.
Don't care much for these days anyway. Even when I did have an appreciation for Liu, and never ever used.

To me, Liu not making woo-tah noises is like Scorpion not saying Get Over Here or Raiden not screaming gibberish when he flies. It's part of his character. Robin Shou's Liu was so boring and not Liu-like to me because he never made the god damned noises.
I wouldn't mind them toning it down a little bit, sure, they were too much in Deception/Armageddon. But MK vs DCU was too far in the other direction. The only move that has it being the bike kick is bullshit. AT LEAST put it on the flying kick too. The long "WOOOOOOOOO" is the best.
MK2 had the perfect amount of Bruce Lee noises. Do it like that.

Short Anwser: No
Long Anwser: Without some type of evolution, we don't need Liu Kang anymore. Zombie Liu Kang was a great idea not so good implemented (he fighting equal as always... MKAr Intro was the idea).

And I suppose all the other classic characters have evolved a lot then?
Yeah characters such as say Johnny Cage and Nightwolf are completely different to what we're used to.
In fact I'd actually say Liu KAng has evolved more than those characters.

You can count the number of "classics" that have evolved over the series on one hand. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Nightwolf are not among them.
You won't see me advocating their return.

Here's an idea. How about we stop pretending leaving Liu out is an option.
Can you not tell it's an MK1-3 remake? It's pretty blatantly obvious that every character who was in MKvsDC will be in this game too. Most of them just weren't in the trailer because seeing their moves would be old news, the team wanted to show off the guys they're working on that weren't in MKvsDC.

Oh you old coot. You haven't been positive since MKSM.
Hey, I liked Liu dead and the idea of a future after Armageddon too. But I ALSO like the idea of "Take another try at Shaolin Monks only THIS time, let fucking Vogel write it because he actually knows what he's doing."
That's some real thinking positive.
Here, now you try: just keep telling yourself if this works out, they have to remake MK4 next and a more detailed MK4 means Sareena'll probably get to be in it.

It's not my fault. They keep proving me right...for all the wrong reasons!!
"We're making Shaolin Monks which tells the story of MK2 as it really happened. And we even hired a comic book writer to make sure the story doesn't get screwed up!"
Ah ha.
"Now we're doing Armageddon which will bring back every character and wrap up all the current storylines in one single game!"
I'll concede, they at least didn't screw Sareena up (though not from lack of effort: "Hey, let's have her enslaved by Quan Chi again!"). So I got that going for me....
....and they've just as quickly taken her away.
"Remember how we said the next Mortal Kombat would be a streamlined return to our roots? Well we decided to do a corssover with DC first and the entire MK side of the roster will be the 'icons' of the series. And for you Kitana fans....you better get excited, because this will be a return to her MK2 glory!"
That turned out well.

Oh no...I lready spent that nickel after MK vs. DC.
"Well, that was bad...but it was just a one-and-done crossover game. The next game will finally trim away the worthless oldies and move forward! Yeah, MK9...that'll be the one to......oh fuck.
We're getting off topic here.
But what is the point of making a sequel if you're going to throw away all the characters fans love? You might as well just reboot the whole thing.
Capcom would never ditch Ryu from a Street Fighter game, yet how many new moves did he get for Street Fighter 4? Oh yeah, none.

I never said get rid of ALL the old characters. Keep the ones that have actually managed to evolve and stay somewhat fresh over the years. Or at the very least, ones that had some merit to begin with.
But also allow the more recent characters a chance to become favorites and evolve.
I don't care about many times the repackage him or how many tattooes they give, Johnny Cage sucks. He sucked then, he sucks now, and he always will suck. Nothing will make me like him, or Liu Kang, or Kano, or Jax, or Sonya.
They needn't throw away everyone. Just the ones not worth it.

Liu Kang's not even on the same level as Ryu when it comes to that; that'd be Sub-Zero, who's the only character to ever be featured as a playable character in all versions of every MK game, with the exception of Special Forces and MKDA on the GBA (yes, I know there were two Subby's, but you get my point). Also, Capcom did throw away a lot of the characters people loved when they made SF3, having an entirely new roster with the exception of Ryu and Ken (Akuma only came back in 2nd Impact).
Anyway, to get back on topic, Liu Kang's not exactly that popular. Sure, he's one of the original characters, but the most advancing thing that happened in his entire story was when he died. Aside from that, he was just the generic good guy, fighting for the greater good, the true altruist that doesn't live for anything more than saving the world. He's like a watered down Superman, without the close connections, the random weaknesses, he's just plain bland at this point.

You basically neglected all his development and story in your post.
It all comes down to perspective, if you like a char or not.
And I know Capcom ditched pretty much everybody in Sf3, and look how well that game did at release because of it, they even added more and more classics to each revision of that game.
And what did Capcom do with Sf4, they added 99% of the classic characters back again and voila, it was extremely well received and sold a bunch.

What development and story Liu Kang does have is minimal. It's cookie-cutter, bland, and basic. I even analyzed Liu Kang's individual story (page 9). Even at his best, he's a very paint-by-the-numbers character.
There are much better and more developed protagonists.

Yes and no. One's subjective opinion can be based on objective points.

Liu Kang having a boring, bland and cookie cutter story, that's just your opinion. It's not a fact. I could just as well say that Sub Zero's story page is just as small and uninteresting.
But this topic was obviously intended for fans of Liu Kang, not for people who dislike him. It's gone totally off topic.

When your motivation to fight evil is simply "not fighting evil would be a bad thing"....or you develop a love interest which is based on little more than "because she's there," you don't have a very compelling character.
Regardless if your interested in one or the other, one character has motivation and developed interaction with other characters. One doesn't. That's not opinion...that basic characterization.
I find Kintaro interesting....that don't make him a compelling character.
