Wow...The last great Survivors: Champions or Victims?
And the one million dollar question is:
Why? Why were they chosen to survive?
This thread OBVIOUSLY contains SPOILERS
You have been warned.
Story-mode was quite an ambitious project. Thankfully, the wait, the time, and the dedication were all totally worth it. This game delivered a near-perfect master piece and an almost flawless experience.
Like every other MK fan out there, I am shocked, sad, and surprised by the events that took place during/after the tournaments and the invasion. I was caught off guard by the large number of deaths that happened in this game.
As a #1 fan (and lover) of Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, I couldn't be happier about their roles, presentation, portrayal, development, and ending in the game. The story began with their chapters, and in a kind of "poetic" way, it only felt right that it ended with them as well: I'm happy and relieved they survived...

...and I'm also very curious to know why. What made them so special?
I'm still extremely upset about the deaths of some characters, but, more on that on another thread/topic.
1) What are your thoughts regarding Johnny and Sonya being the only remaining survivors of the Original Chosen Heroes?
2) What is your opinion as to why they were spared and what awaits them in the dark future?
3) What does Raiden have in store for both of them?
I believe they were both chosen to survive for deep specific reasons: for 1) what they both represent in the world of MK as independent names and for 2) what their roles/missions are within the storyline.
Both were obviously build up to be leaders. Johnny Cage has evolved to become so much more than most haters ever imaged (or wanted to give him credit for). MKA pretty much established the role that has been planned for Johnny and this game seems to be pushing this idea.
...or, does something sinister await them and our beloved Thunder god?
Something else worth pointing out is that Sonya and Johnny both developed a special connection in this game. It was sweet and brilliantly done:
Hopefully we won't have to wait for the next game to get some answers from the developers/creators as to what awaits these 2 in the future and what their important missions/roles will be in regards to saving Earth.

Johnny is more important than you may remember. After Liu Kang died and Raiden went bannanas, he was the one who rallied the forces of light to fight in armageddon.
"He is a hero, even if he doesn't know it"
As far as their specific plot involvement in Mortal Kombat 2 (The sequel to this one), it can only be left up to serious speculation.

1) Eh.... It's alright. Like you said I am extremely disappointed in some of the deaths. But keeping these two alive is a pretty big "what the heck?!". Totally unexpected.
2) Hmmmm tough question. In Cages bio it says something about being a descendant of super greeks, so maybe he has untapped powers? And I think Sonya being special forces she will be able to lead an army (or something) against hells army.
3) At this point I think Raiden is just taking it one step at a time, I don't think he was expecting them to be alive. Johnny living through the Sindel rape-fest was either coincidence or maybe even his untapped powers.
Nice thread!

I haven't gotten through the entire story mode yet. I'm on the MK3 chapter, but from what I've seen from Sonya so far... tsk tsk tsk *shakes and shakes head*
First, they quickly establish her as the "hot blonde."
Then, Johnny kicks the shit out of her and says "Not bad for a... (GIRL)."
Then instead of showing her toughness through her overconfident courage and determination, they simply have her throwing cuss words around instead: "I'll kick your ass" and "motherfucker." Censored, but still.
This just doesn't feel like the old Sonya. She feels more like a pawn for Johnny's personality to bounce off of. Everytime they interacted, it felt like the dialogue, expressions, etc. were made entirely with his character development in mind.
I'll finish watching the end tomorrow, so I might change my mind, but so far I vomit on what they have done to her.
It's the same shit with Kitana, btw. First, Liu makes a complete joke out of her when they start to fight, and later she's referred to as a "housewife." Ugh!
But anyways, I'm real glad you enjoyed it queve. If any chick deserves to be the last one standing, it shouldn't be anyone other than Ms. Sonya Blade herself.
I wonder if those two were made the survivors because they were the most "human" of the lot. Lets look at the others.... Jax is now Partial Cyborg, Night Wolf is whatever, Jade and Kit are Edenians, Kabal is disfigured and Stryker..... he's nothing near a main character of the series.

About Me
"Wise though your emperor might be, he was foolish to send his housemaid to interfere with Lin Kuei business." SMOKE!

When the leaks first came out, I was disappointed that Kitana/KungLao/Nightwolf had all died. That was all script text though.
But when I saw virtually all of the good guys get killed by Sindel except for Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade...wow. Initially, I found myself asking "How did they, of all the people there, survive the onslaught?" By the end of the story though, I was very satisfied. It felt like this was how MK:Armageddon was truly meant to end. A very risky move by Netherrealm Studios, granted...but if they play it right, the next chapter in Mortal Kombat will have an even more engaging storyline than this most recent tale.
Keep in mind that I'm NOT a lifelong fan of Mortal Kombat as I'm speaking my thoughts. The last MK I truly enjoyed was MK2. The last-gen games seemed lame (MKDA through MKA), and the brief time I played MK v. DC, I was thinking the entire time "This game is so stiff." MK(2011) sounds like it plays well as it presents itself this time around, and that's what's got me excited for when I get the chance to play this game.
Whenever that time is, that is...I don't think it'll be any time soon, as I don't have immediate access to a game console or the game itself.

I'm not really sure as far as Sonya goes. But Cage was kinda getting the rub as the new hero before everything went to shit in Armageddon. Even early in the story, There was a point when everyone split up that Raiden looked at him, and admits something along the lines of "perhaps you are the hero". I wouldn't be surprised to see him play the "earthrealm champion" role in the Neatherealm invasion.
About Me
Keep dunking your Kenshi breadsticks into your Skarlet sauce, people! The main course isn't coming for a while, and you never know when it's going to be disappointing.

Cage and Sonya were the only two heroes of the original MK other than Raiden and Liu Kang. Maybe that's a non-plot related reason?
The only part that pissed me off about the whole thing is that, apart from Kung Lao and Liu Kang, pretty much EVERYONE who was killed was killed by Sindel in a matter of seconds. That just doesn't make much sense to me. It would have been much better if Sindel, Sheeva, Kano, and a handful of other bad guys showed up instead, but all the deaths get tallied up in seconds from a resurrected mind controlled milf.

Not saying this to sound like a jerk, 'cause I am a Johnny Cage fan and I don't mind Sonya at all...but I think they deliberately picked the two weakest good guys to be the ones who survived, to place as much emphasis as possible on the severity of Raiden's screw-ups and just how fucked Earthrealm is gonna be when Shinnok attacks.
Well...the two weakest after Stryker. I presume he died because being a survivor basically means "I'm automatically in the sequel" and Stryker can't get that kind of guarantee in popularity terms.

I'm happy for you your favorite character survived and all, but my personal wish was Kabal, Smoke and Jade surviving the assault, I want them to become more imporant in future games.
It would be a nice twist aswel, nobody would expect those two to survive, they are basically friends of friends of Raiden.
It would be a nice twist aswel, nobody would expect those two to survive, they are basically friends of friends of Raiden.
Hell, not even Shao Kahn managed (or wanted) to killed them with his huge energy blasts.
Actually, I remember all of that pretty well.
Johnny is one of my faves and that is one of the best bios ever. He was the biggest surprise in that game.
That's why I said: they seem to be moving him forward taking into consideration the changes they gave him in MKA. They've done justice to Mr. Cage.
1) It wasn't unexpected, imo. It was just that the main general slaughter of everyone else was a huge surprise. My heart almost stopped when I saw what she did to Jax and Jade.
2) Exactly my thoughts. Also, MKA pretty much established Johnny as a guide, leader, and even the main hero. This game gave borrowed the idea from that development. I'm very intrigued to know more about his "untapped" powers. It looked like he alone destroyed a whole country in his ending.
Sonya will definitely get some development concerning her past (specifically her father), but, she'll probably be Earth's main defense if she doesn't leave the SF. If Sonya stays, she'll have the military under her command. If she leaves, how will she take care of the invasion and what does this "spirit" want with her (for those who saw the ending)?
3) I don't think he was expecting anyone to die, though. He was just as surprised as Liu Kang.
1) They really did put a lot of emphasis on the main characters being dead during the intro. You get clear views of: Kung Lao, Scorpion, Johnny and Sonya. The way they focused on the last two was cruel and gruesome. It kind of makes sense now (in a weird way). My jaw dropped when I saw them.
2) Well, they were very stupid for always trying to make Johnny only be about "movies". However, he has not died as many times as people always think he has. Scorpion has died more times than Johnny Cage in the game's storyline.
3) I too loved that scene with Sonya. It was sad and it made you realize the pain of everything that happened. I wish they would have shown more of Johnny's and Sonya's pain in regards to their looses. Sonya looses her best friend who clearly loves her like crazy.
OMG....are you sure we are playing the same game?
Trust me, had Sonya been mistreated, badly portrayed, or developed poorly in this game, I would, without any hesitation, voice my furious opinion with the force of a thousand dying Suns and complain about it till the release of the next MK game.
Seriously. Had she been treated poorly, I would definitely complain about it and grow bitter against NRS.
Thankfully, though, thats not going to be necessary because she was pure awesomeness. Much much better than in MKvsDC (which was already perfect, imo).
She was definitely established as "the hot blond", but, her toughness was most definitely shown through her overconfident courage. I mean, did you not see her scene and dialogue VS Shang Tsung and Raiden? And the way she addressed everyone before she decided to trust them?
She's kicking everyone's ass with so much attitude. She left her name written in everyone's ass: from Lin Kuei ninjas to the thunder god himself to a double tag team of Edenia's royalty to crazy Kano, etc.
I think she was done pretty well. She's still that confident tough bitch with the attitude that we all have learned to know, respect, and love.
But, I do agree with you regarding Liu's scene with Kitana. That was insulting for the Princess, imo. But, she does gets her butt kicked a lot during the entire game.
Maybe.
I think its a lot deeper than that, specially because we know Johnny Cage is not "just a movie star" like we knew him before MKA. He's got something ready.
Absolutely. Nicely put!
Question though: in your opinion, would you have expected someone else to live instead of them? I wasn't surprised they lived, however, I was definitely relieved they were not slaughter because they could have fallen there.
But, then, not even Shao Kahn kills them!
I hope you get everything soon.
Exactly.
Ever since we found out that Liu Kang was "probably not going to win the tournament", I always thought that Johnny Cage was the most likely choice, specially after MKA.
I think Sonya's role in the future game is going to be quite heavy as Earth's SF/OIA defender. If she abandons her position though, I'm super intrigued to know what that spirit wants with her, and how it will guide her to success (assuming its benevolent).
As much as I love the greatness and badass that Sindel is...I have to agree.
Its not because I don't like her, but, its because of how soon and quick all of it happened. I mean, they survived everything up until that point and that's how they have to go?
Even she?
I was amazed, shocked, happily surprised, but, at the same time, a bit disappointed.
I don't think many of those characters had to die. But, since they did, I think it would have been much better if it would have happened throughout the story mode in other scenes. Save 3 big ones for Sindel, but, not everyone!
She was a badass though. Amazing to no end.
I think you underestimate Stryker's popularity.
I think its safe to expect him in the near future. He was done justice in this game. You can tell that they really did dedicate tons of time with him.
Regarding Johnny and Sonya, if by "weakest" you mean "two of the more human who have to learn more about their powers", I agree.
But, they are certainly no "weaker" than Jax, Kitana, Kung Lao, etc. Sonya and Johnny singlehandedly wrote their names on many big asses. They are facing off and beating monsters and 10,000 year old ninja assassins.
They've got what it takes.
Thanks.
And yes, I totally agree with you regarding those 3. I think it was very messed up and lame how they all had to go so fast and in the blink of an eye.
However, I think its safe to assume they will return.

I don't there was anything special about them that made the team decide to keep them. Honestly, with the amount of deaths in this game, I wouldn't be surprised if they flipped a coin to see who lived and died.

I don't see how they're gonna do the next one. Everyone is dead, so... what, they just gonna scrap all these characters we love? Doubtful. Are they gonna have everyone back as zombies? Resurrected and part of Shinnok's army? I'm not liking any of those options, but what else is there?
I guess now they can finally do what they've been trying to all along, give EVERYONE glowing pupil-less eyes and actually have there be a reason for it other than it just looks cool.

I havent played yet just read spoilers but doesn't shang turn good in his ending?? Now knowing Quan Chi has the earthrealm warriors souls at his command and that when people die they end up in the Netherealm, could anyone see Shang potentially turning good albeit temporarily in MK10? This could work by him taking their souls and transporting them back into their real bodies. I also got the feeling the two sorcerer's aren't to fond of each other

Considering the amount of attention and dedication they gave this game, I don't think that would make sense.

LOL on the pupil-less eyes comment.
I think we are going to see some of those characters back. Others, well, they might just move on.

Well, I stopped reading because I haven't gotten to those endings yet.
However, your theory sounds interesting.
I was dissapointed by the whole ending. Johnny is my fave, but there are so many others that should be alive. I feel like 90 percent of this roster should be in the next game, and they make it seem like that won't really happen. I don't know what there going to do with CSZ either. U can't make an MK game without regular Sub and Scorpion. U can't make an SF game without Ken and Ryu.

They'll be back. All of them. Whether alive or brainwashed zombies. Nobody stays dead in Mortal Kombat. Not my words, John Vogel's words.
I think they planned to make the Nether Realm invasion next game more high stakes than the original, and having most of the heroes slain and resurrected by Quan Chi would certainly do that.

As much as I enjoyed Johnny in the story mode, he should have died.
Two things:
1. Kitana defeats a random monk in Kahn's Arena, refuses to kill him so Shao Kahn kills him instead.
2. Later on in the story, at the exact same place (Kahn's Arena) Ermac defeats Johnny Cage, but why doesn't Ermac or Shao Kahn kill Johnny? Why would they kill a monk, but spare Johnny. Makes no sense in the story context.
However, there's a bunch of things that don't make sense throughout the story mode, so I guess I'm just gonna go "whatever" about it.
The story mode was entertaining, but that's it, I definitely lost my passion for MK's story. I am happy though that Lord Shinnok is coming and hopefully Fujin too. That is what makes me very excited for the next game, I really don't care who's going to die, because seriously, no one ever really dies in MK. Sub-Zero dead? lol

Obviously they knew people were gonna rage about Cyber Sub so they killed him to have an excuse to make him human next time. That I can approve of.

"Absolutely. Nicely put!
Question though: in your opinion, would you have expected someone else to live instead of them? I wasn't surprised they lived, however, I was definitely relieved they were not slaughter because they could have fallen there.
But, then, not even Shao Kahn kills them! "
I didn't expect the slaughter that did take place to begin with! But out of all the casualties, I would've expected only Sub-Zero to live...maybe Smoke if he was lucky. Perhaps if Sub-Zero was in his human form, he would've lived instead of getting shocked to death. Smoke deserved a better death than the KungLao necksnap treatment though...especially with his well-done redesign! But that's just me.

I'm curious to know why you feel that way.
I understand the feeling regarding characters who should not have died, but, why do you feel Johnny had to die? Is it because of those moments in the story mode that you wrote about? Because tons of characters who loose don't die afterwards, so, I don't think that matters.
Johnny was very well developed and flawlessly portrayed. He has been build up to live to the high expectations that his MKA bio and ending offered years ago. I can totally understand why he'd be spared.
I think its his time again. I find that awesome.

I think that was mostly because it was her. You can see what he wants/expects from her and how horrible he is at pushing her to live his style of life.

I thought my passion would die with all the retcons and the slaughter of the canon, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my passion has only gone higher.
I only hope they do justice to the plot of MKDA (my second most favorite overall story in the series).

I still think this is her weakest presentation yet. I did not gather her strength, courage, and "force to be reckoned with" portrayal like in previous games.
We received glimpses of her toughness here and there, but she was quickly made a joke of at the start, just like Kitana, so it cancels it out imo.
Of all the females (in story mode), I think only Sindel, Jade, and Sheeva were done well and respectably. Sonya was merely Johnny's babe, Kitana was the housewife princess like always, and Mileena was the foe "dressed like that."
I know you'll disagree queve, but Sonya being Johnny's babe was the only impression I got from her. That was her most important purpose in story mode. I mean wasn't it like 3 or 4 different times that we had to sit through Johnny flirt or talk about how hot he thinks she is? The fight between Jax and him was based entirely on that. And the whole Jax/partner and hunting down Kano thing felt more like a subplot for her. The main role she played was Johnny's bitch. That's what I walked away with: "Oh she's the girl Johnny likes," and it pissed me off.
I think people playing MK for the first time will not get a real idea of who Sonya is. They'll think of her as that "army babe who fights like girl." I am a Sonya fan too, and that's what I have to say.

Who will set up the Outworld Investigation Agency without sonya?
