The lightning could mean several other things; remember, Ed Boon likes to sometimes troll, like he did with the character select silhouettes

They probably feel the need to reveal a classic character to balance the new ones out a bit. They could have revealed a post-Trilogy character but they probably wouldn't be "classic" enough for the common fan. Could've went with someone a little less obvious but I get their idea.
