So, the last chapter of the first season of the comics. Lots of talking points

- Sektor is dead (although we already knew this)
- Cyrax is dead
- Frost appears again, story seems to be relatively the same as MK:DA so far
- Daegon is back
- Onaga is mentioned by both Goro and Daegon
- Goro delivers Kenshi to Daegon, ending on sort of a cliffhanger

I have mixed feelings about this chapter. It explains why Cyrax isn't in the game, but the explanation sucks. Seeing Daegon again is good, and it sets up a way for Goro to get his arms back. I'm guessing Daegon will be the main villain if we get a season 2, but anything is possible at this point.

What did you guys think of this chapter and of the overall first season?

It could have been handled better, granted. Cyrax checked out like a boss, and thankfully we have the cyber initiative wiped out.

OK but this girl's camel toe
I liked it. The Cyber Initiative is dealt with and Cyrax went out on his terms and handed the Lin Kuei to Sub-Zero. Whether you like it or not this is canon but it doesn't mean they can't rip someone out of the Heavens or The Netherrealm and put them in rhe game like last timeline. Personally I have to hand it to them: Sure you killed off Drahmin and Hsu Hao but it takes a lot of balls to kill off trilogy characters like Cyrax and Kintaro.

But I think if they ever want a Cyborg again they can simply have Sektor's head stolen and revived to life somehow or have Enenra take over a leftover cyborg shell and possess it basically being Ninja/Smoke Demon/Cyborg.

Really liked all those special unique snowflakes showing up at Sub Zero's door and Frost showing up again.

Daegon bleh, Onaga eh but they did good stuff for Reiko and Havik so I'm not going to write them off just yet.

Can't wait for Season 2, I have hopes for Hotaru, Kai, Ashrah and Nitara to show up. And if Kira, Kobra, Dairou, Darrius, Chameleon and Jarek show up too you can bet they'll probably die.

They'll probably kill off Queen Sheeva too I'd wager (Oh well she had her moment) and I'd kinda like to see what the Centaurs have been up to.

I sincerely hope they're not writing off dead characters for future appearances in the games.

*sigh*

Fighting game characters are so much more than their stories. They each have their own communities. It's cool that MK wants to put more emphasis on their story, but they need to consider that they're not working with comic book characters. There's far more at stake here than the integrity of the story. The game should always come first.

If they'd just tell us that dead characters may still be playable in future games, regardless of story, I'd feel so much better.

The chapter was alright handling Sub-Zero finally killing Sektor, but I thought Cyrax's death was anticlimactic. He and Sub-Zero could have found a way to shut them down rather Cyrax blowing himself up. As Master, Cyrax could have just ordered the clones to go into a mass suicide and escape the facility along with Sub-Zero. He clearly has the power to do that. Well at least we got to see Bo pass the vomit and Frost being the aggressive brat that she is.

As for the ending...that's it? Don't get me wrong Kittelsen is a great writer and so far, he produced the best MK comic series all around, but I'm having a hard time looking at this and just letting "the ending" pass. How could Goro beat a blind telepathic swordsman WITHOUT his arms? Show me how it went down, don't tell me and show Kenshi's beaten-up body. Also, Daegon's Dragon King? I thought Daegon and the Red Dragon were loyal to Shinnok's leagues? How does Onaga fit into this ending? Does it imply he still lives in his physical form or in his astral avatar Damashi?

Anyway I honestly we could have gotten an ending that points to the direction of MKX or MK11, but it's a comic not a video game. If there's anything I've learned about NRS, they are the masters of inconsistency. And from this we're expected to get a Season 2, but Kittelsen just spouts his ideas of what characters would appear in S2 IF DC approved his new season and there's no major developments of the idea getting passed through from the comic world. Guess we'll wait and see.

Overall great series, but a confusing and anticlimactic ending.

I liked the ending. If DC approves a season two at least there's some set up. Kinda wish they didn't do a cliffhanger, just in case there isn't a sequel. Kenshi has to get from being the area Dragons prisonor. I'm guessing special forces will help lol. The mention of Onaga is interesting and changes a lot of stuff. Just like when shujinko showed up. I guess in this time line Shujinko was gaining skills at the Kang temple. I hope they don't change Onaga origin he better still be Damashi here. Though I can't see Onaga being a threat in the comic he's better for the game even though that would be another retread like Shinnok is. Especially since this is still before Shinnok return. All in all the comic was fun

Sub-zeros fight with Sektor was awesome, and the way he killed him was just boss. poor Cyrax :( he went out like a total boss, but still cant help but feel he could have stayed, and worked with Kuai.

Onaga being mentioned probably means he will be the next Big Bad i think, and obviously how Goro will get his arms back.

I liked this chapter quite a bit.

I thought Cyrax's death was handled pretty well. He went out like a beast. I did like that it sets up a new storyline but it'll be weird if they don't get a second run.

Only gripe I have is Outworld got no closure at all. And I'm not sure why people are worried about these deaths being canon. I've said it so many times already but I'll say it again. Death is meaningless in MK. If you do get killed you will likely miss a game.

And even if you're dead, you still have a chance to be playable. They went through the trouble of giving Liu Kang, Kitana, and Kung Lao non canon costumes just to hide the fact that they don't get revived. And if nothing else, there's always DLC, which is non canon.

Cyrax's death was left open. Maybe he self destructed the base and the clones then went into hiding, punishing himself for going through with the initiative even if he disagreed with it. He felt he had no honor left and played a part in ruining the Lin Kuei.

I thought the group of people who went to Sub Zero looked dumb.In Outworld it would have been fine but I have a hard time to believe there so many ninjas and warriors dressing like that on earth.

I'm fine with Goro beating Kenshi without arms. That's the Goro we need. He's supposed to be a beast.
How exactly did Goro beat Kenshi you say?

You don't need arms to spam Shokan Stomp. Edit: Outworld isn't going to get closure until the game in which Mileena dies.

At last this dull first series comes to an end. But after being mentioned a bajillion times by name, we FINALLY see Daegon. Nice. The Lin Kuei "tournament" - LOL.

That very last subplot was the only bright spot of this issue (surprise), yet how the fuck could Goro take out Kenshi with NO ARMS? Christ.

Also, it would've been a much better effect on the very last page had his blindfold been removed.

Oh well, at least we're getting a break for awhile so the marks can now obsess 24/7 over who's going to be in KP2.

I wonder who signed off on this series being "canon," despite the obvious inconsistencies between this story and the games, not to mention basic story logic. How has Goro never heard of the former Emperor of Outworld? If Kenshi is already in the Red Dragon base, what kind of facepalm-worthy plot contrivance needs to happen to make him have to hunt them down all over again by the game's timeline? How does Takeda consider Jacqui a "new face" in the game if they've already met before?

Overall, I like the comic and really enjoy how many of the characters have been given a good character treatment. But considering how much Kittelsen took pride in reading pages and pages of MK lore to get the details right, it's a little jarring how many really obvious, not-even-trivia things got messed up.

How do you know Onaga is the former Emperor of Outworld in this timeline? The Red Dragon never had anything to do with him in the old timeline either, yet here we are. They've already changed a lot of other stuff in the reboot, so this is just one other thing. Kittelsen's talked about delving into the lore, sure, but he's also made it clear that not all of that lore is the same as it was in the old timeline.

Does Kenshi look like he's in any condition to fight the Red Dragon right now? A lot of stuff could happen with him, and it wouldn't be contrivance. We don't know what Daegon plans to do with him.

Also not sure that was really a meeting when she was a possessed maniac trying to kill him, and I don't think they even got each other's names.

And the Kamidogu. And the events of MKM:SZ. And Quan Chi's ever having Shinnok's amulet. (Vogel said that his having it on him in MK9 was a mistake)

Stuff from before MK1 has changed, too. Kittelsen and some NRS folks have said a few times it's a brand new timeline.

1) Goro knows exactly who Onaga was. How did you get the idea that he doesn't?
The connection between Daegon and Onaga hasn't been explained, but I guess it's more between Caro and Onaga. Daegon's family (Argus and Delia) had loyal dragons dedicated to them long after Onaga had been gone (it's mentioned in Mortal Kombat Armageddon that they were at war with Shao Kahn)

2) By the end of MKX Daegon is still alive, so in Season 2 of the comics (if it happens), Kenshi is gonna get his ass kicked ;))) and barely be saved by.... Takeda?

3)Takeda knew Jacqui before the scene in Chapter 2 of the game. He just said that they had only recently formed the team.

PS: Daegon looks badass! Amazing job by the artist. His face looks so young zoomed in.... just how a God should look.!

"Everything that happened before MK1 is still canon"

There shouldn't really be any inconsistencies, but some minor things did change:

- Nightwolf, Cyrax and Sektor being in the first tournament when it was said in Shaolin Monks that only Liu Kang and Kung Lao survived after the island came crashing down. Well, it's believable others might have survived. Johnny Cage was also rescued somehow in the original timeline

-Kabal is already working with the police (Black Dragon rat ;)))) or undercover cop all along??)

- Mileena is just born (though technically it could be a new clone, as evidenced by Mileena's MKX ending; all they should do to explain this is to have Kitana brainwashed into forgetting about the original Mileena after murdering her. Shao Kahn gave his daughter/princess one more chance, but then Kitana failed again during MK1 and MK2, so he ordered a new clone from Shang Tsung)

See? It only takes some mind-twisting to explain what they screw up grin

I don't think that Mileena thing works at all. Shang Tsung had very obviously already been working on her for a while, and no one happens to mention that there had already been a Mileena around? Not to mention that it was treated as a big deal in the MKX game that Reptile was one of the few who knew the truth behind Mileena's origin, but I think everyone would have been able to figure it out if Mileena was killed and then another one showed up later.

But even then, all of that? Kitana killing Mileena? That would still mean there were pre-MK1 changes in the timeline.

Well, yeah, it was obviously a mistake. It's left for us to cover it up confused tongue

If Kitana had indeed killed the original Mileena and Shao Kahn had declared her innocent, I'm sure none in his army would have dared to bring up the subject again. It happens a lot in dictatorial regimes, where the dictator decides what is and what is not the truth.
From what I remember about that story mode, Jade seemed to know that Mileenas do exist, wanted to stop Kitana from pursuing the truth and immediately recognized that Mileena wasn't Kitana, so she was either a really competent spy or she had seen Mileenas before.

I dunno, just sayin' wink

Yeah, but after Shao Kahn's death, what reason would his forces have to keep pretending it never happened? Someone would have brought it up long before Reptile stepped forward with his testimony; they would have already had proof something was up and that Mileena's rule wasn't legitimate.
