Well, I believe gameplay should always take precedence over story, especially in a video game, but that's me.

Well when I start discussing gameplay i'll call for you :)

I adored Reptile years ago. Up until MK:DA, he was my favourite character, but I suppose I just got sick of seeing him stay as a lackey to so many characters and eventually lost interest in him (I'm one of those fans who likes a character based on the story).

I'm delighted for Reptile fans that he's included, but I'm not overjoyed to see him. Tbh I'd have rather seen him killed off in the comics to allow newer, fresher characters with more potential step up to the plate. He's been around for so long and yet has never amounted to or achieved anything in all the time we've gotten to know him, which to me is severely off putting. Even Rain, who was considered a joke character and hated by the community for years, done more within the space of the only 3 games he appeared in than Reptile has in 20 odd years.

I suppose I should try find *some* things to praise.

I like the fact he's now using the tongue in his attacks, the fact he's speaking, and I like the flip kick he has in his moveset now. His costume is also an improvement on both of his costumes from MK9.

Overall, I found this reveal to be very "meh". I'm happy for Reptile fans but I'm disappointed he's taking up a character slot.

Well said. Reptile at this point certainly feels like a complete waste. Boring outfit, less than stellar game play, and possible a lackey once again. I'd definitely boot him for a 3D era character.

That's downright depressing. I agree about it being a hype killer, I was so excited to know who the new character would be and then what a subpar trailer. Oh well, At least some of the Rep fans seem to be happy.

I agree with the other poster who said this should've shown off his variations. That might have helped...maybe.

Everything about Reptile save for the costume looks a bit to MK9-like. And overall it is not the most interesting character in the series. NRS could bring Baraka as well, while we at it, so we once again could had an insignificant duo of classic characters having unexciting adventures nobody cares about.

New generation...pffftt...

Sumac, we don't know what reptiles story is yet. let's pump the brakes.

As MK-Team prooved time and time again they don't want anything great out of Reptile, unless he possed by something. So, I don't see how he can become important to anything or anyone.
If they pull it out - more powers to them.

It's as if NRS now stands for Nonstop Recycling of Sameness.

Saying "same popular faces" is a bit odd. If they are popular, it'd be kinda silly to just drop them. It's gotta be a fine balance.

I take it this all stems from the lack of MK4-MK:D characters...to which I feel is a poor reason to completely condemn a game, its roster, and its gameplay.

No, but a little something called variety won't hurt things either. NRS has their heads up their ass in that department due to their inability to develop the MK4-and-beyond characters while continuing to be oblivious to the fact that not everyone despises them.

Except for the four newbies, EVERY official character so far in MKX is from the digitized games. It's ridiculous and hardly what one would call a fine balance.

Lots of intros will be very interesting. But damn, how long would it take to hear them all?

If they all say different things to each fighter, including against themselves, it could be 25x25 through 30x30, potentially 625-900 different conversations, and that's ignoring the DLC AND the fact that some people have MULTIPLE conversations between each other.

Without a Single fight mode, it would probably be impossible to see them all without a Youtube compilation or something.

Agreed. Underutilized characters when it comes to actual story presence.

Our boys clearly need their own Shaolin Monks-style game.
And they will call it... Mortal Kombat: Tooth & Claw.

You guys are ridiculous. Why the hell would they not include stalwarts in the game???? It only makes sense for them to knock out the veterans first. Revealing newbies not only takes away the surprise factor of the game, but it also ruins it for those who like the comics. We'll get new characters. Stop bitching... I get your argument in terms of post MK3 characters getting the shaft, but the sad truth is, you can't sell a game on most of those characters. At least not to the casual fans who are going to buy the game up front and the ones who WBIE and NRS are going to make their money from. It'd certainly be a shame if we didn't see ANY of the later characters, not counting Quan Chi and Kenshi. 2/3s of the people who are going to buy this game do not give a fuck about Havik, or Ashrah, or Kai, or Dairou (nobody cares about Dairou though.)

So when NRS decides to give a website like IGN a reveal, they are going to give them a character like Kano, or Raiden, or Kung Lao, because that means more traffic and views from all of the casual MK fans. Dairou is not going to push those numbers. That might not be reason enough to exclude him from the game, but it's reason enough to not have him in promo materials at this point. And I think when it comes to the post MK3 characters, NRS has to be very selective with the ones they choose. Which ones can they improve, which ones are worth improving and which ones are best left forgotten and should be replaced with NEW characters and concepts.

Also "Man-Lizard monster" Reptile has been my favorite and I think they strike a nice balance with that in MKX. I wasn't as keen on the "Raptor Face" in MK9 but it's grown on me. I'm just so glad he didn't look like this:

Who's to say that variety won't come? The MK roster as a whole, offers a great deal of variety. Even just characters from 1-3, offer a nice variety. So that's a moot point.

Not everyone despises MK4-MKD characters, but they certainly aren't the ones to start driving sales. It is the iconic characters that everyone knows, that do that. Sub, Scorp, Reptile, Johnny, Sonya, Raiden, Kung etc. are going to attract your casual fans, much more so than Fujin, Drahmin, Kai, Tanya, Hotaru, or Nitara etc. I'm not saying those characters don't have their own fans, but to compare them to the "golden era" of MK in the 90's, and the original trilogy roster of characters in terms of iconic status and who is going to gain more interest from the majority(which aren't the ones frequenting MK forums), just doesn't even seem close. Could that change, if those characters are represented more? Sure, but you still want a fair degree of MK9 returnees, as that is the majority of people's favorites.

If we took a poll, from the entire MK fan base, casual or "hardcore", your top 20 will be made up of mostly MK1-3 characters. That's just the reality of it. It's like saying "man, Capcom needs to stop including Guile, Chun-Li, Blanka, Zangief, Balrog, Dhalsim, Cammy, E Honda, Sagat, and Vega etc. and put in the less popular characters from Street Fighter 3." It's just not the answer to cut a bunch of popular iconic characters to give several of the less popular another go. Sprinkle in some less popular characters, 2-3, but for the majority of the main roster, stick with the ones people like, and that people recognize and know.

The fan base of a Sonya/Kitana/Mileena dwarfs the fan base of a Tanya/Li Mei/Nitara.

The fan base of a Reptile/Ermac/Johnny dwarfs the fan base of a Kai/Drahmin/Hotaru.

That's just the truth. Taking all fans into account, not just the ones that are on here or other forums, we're talking the couple million that purchase these games, the majority favorite many from the MK1-3 era.

Just as Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Marvel vs. Capcom etc. don't abandon their more iconic characters, neither should MK.

We're getting to the point where I want more interactions with the new characters and old. And more new/returning characters to interact with the old.

Like Mileena and Ferra...or Reptile and D'Vorah, Kotal and Quan, Cassie and Raiden/Kung Lao if just to make a joke over their headwear.

While I disagree with your stance on Reptile I do feel the same way about needing more Brand New or 4/5/6 Era characters not named Kenshi.

Perhaps that's why there's a dual reveal this week..to get the casual crowd hype over a big MK name like Reptile (And giving the trailer to IGN no less) while showing the hardcore fans a brand new character on their stream along with variation.

I hope anyway...cuz fuck me if It's Nightwolf. You thought Reptile was unhype and boring? Imagine if Nightwolf comes back looking just as bland as before, Spouting "Ancestors!" like it's his catchphrase and carrying a big dumb bow now because "Ancient weapon that comes from my ancestors"

Cause that's what it's startin to look like to me.

/anti-nightwolf rant.

It probably depends on the woman. But a guy with that tongue length, strength, and coordination, as well as the girth, you bet the odds on favorite is the tongue.

@BlackCyborg: Yeah for real, hopefully he has a variation that utilizes the tongue in normal strings to give him more footsie range and more distinction across his playstyles. Everything I've seen across all characters so far has me pretty confident though that whatever his variations are, they'll stand apart from one another.

His forceball becoming "acid venom based" shows coherent design too. There's "acidy glow effects" in his X-Ray too. Game just looks so good man I'm really excited!

What's your Least/Most favorite iteration of Reptile? He's probably the singlemost character whose appearance has changed the most across each game.

@SmokeNc17: Smoke's MK9 hair is too fabulous to be outdone.
