Thing is. Nobody should be mad that Reptile is back. We knew this guy was a high possibility in the first place.

It's the way they reveal these characters that dont cut for me. Just for kicks, for example, You go ahead and tell any guy who has known about Mortal Kombat for a long time that Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub Zero will be in MK:15. They might respond "no shit, they are what make MK".

Ok cool, but now they seem to be getting this idea to reveal these guys as if we never knew who the hell Reptile, Kung Lao, or Kitana was 19 years ago. YES they did a great job with EVERYONE they showed in MKX so far, and Im excited to play the game, dont get it twisted, MKX is gonna be good, but I refuse to go crazy in this whole "Who's Next" mess. People are putting too much into this.

What it have killed them to just reveal Kitana, Kung Lao, Raiden, Sub, Scorp, Reptile, Kano, and the other veteran characters first all in one shot? There's nothing super revealing about the same gift given to a 5 year old kid wrapped in a different color armor, every year if that same kid didnt have a clue In the first place. Thats just corny. They could have a better way of saving time on these reveals without it feeling like such a drag and a long wait is all Im sayin.

Its almost like showing me Scorpion one week, and 5 months later you decide to finally show Sub Zero? Yeah they are awesome, but WTF. show me somebody I dont have a clue about.

I think that's a big part of it. They showed Scorp and Subby and yeah obviously then they showed a bunch of new people talking about the next generation of MK and having as much newness as possible and THEN started revealing returning characters exclusively.

But the thing is the new characters might reveal too much story wise. The way these trailer are with intros and everything something spoilery would surely be revealed and after the MK9 leak they're probably holding a lot more than they usually would.

Also people took NRS narrative of "new fighters" waaaaay too far. People were throwing out these ridiculous numbers like only eight returning characters or more than half the roster would be new and stuff like that. Returning characters might be damage control. Showing fans that apparently didn't hear them when they said that long time fans would be happy with the returning roster.

"More new characters than any previous MK"

If you count Onaga and Shujinko , Deception had 9.

Dairou, Darrius, Havik, Kobra, Kira, Ashrah, Shujinko and Onaga.

Right now MKX has 4 new characters.

If there are 26 characters, with 13 being revealed, and Mileena likely being the next reveal, that still leaves 12 characters left.

There would have to be at least 6 more new characters to technically be more than deception.

Takeda, Forrest Fox, Erron Black (Salazar?), Jacqui, Kung Jin, and Ro tan Cho.

The other six most likely being Fujin, Shinnok, Shang Tsung, Bo Rai Cho, and the last two being anyone's guess .... Smoke, Tanya, Ermac, Baraka ?

I don't hate Reptile, but this reveal was rather weak. He is less changed than most of the shown characters, his gameplay is a heavily enhanced take on his MK9's (even the uppercut is kinda ... 100% the same) and then they put him head to head with King Lao, with a goofy intro conversation.

I welcome his return, but I think by far this is the weakest reveal.

People judging gameplay before variations are shown is lolworthy.

And this isn't necessarily directed at you, but I don't recall people bitching about Kitana's moves all being the same in her trailer a few weeks back, so this site is filled to the brim with hypocrites it seems.

That's it actually, the reveal is so weak that it actually told us little from what I have seen they are playing it safe with Reptile . Kitana's trailer brought more than Kitana, it brought glimpses of new stages, a few secs of story mode, Kung Lao in action ,etc...

They could have shown the variations, or at least brought a better opponent where a the intro dialogue would be more interesting. I just hate the fact that Kung Lao still sounds cheesy.

So many people complain that Reptile's story never changes -- that he's always a henchman working for someone who promises to restore his race, and never gets anywhere. Same kind of thing with Scorpion, and often Baraka.

Now here's a big question for you guys: Why are you picking so hard on these characters in particular?

Tanya apparently has a shitload of fans who want her back, but she exhibits the exact same behavior pattern. She teams up with the bad guy of the year and loses. Johnny Cage, Sonya, Jax, Jade, Kung Lao... none of these guys have ever really evolved in their roles in any significant way, but a lot of people love them, and only Cage seems to have a notable share of haters (because of his personality, not his story). Reiko didn't do shit and people are climbing all over him.

So why are we picking on Reptile so much in proportion to the other guys? And for that matter, what kind of specific progression do you want to see from him? Does he become the leader of his repopulated race -- thus following the exact same line as Sub-Zero, Kitana, Sektor, and now Scorpion? That seems way too predictable.

What if he moved up in "rank" from being Shao Kahn's pet? Like, what if he got promoted to full-on general and got to commit genocide against entire worlds, like in MK4? Or what if he discovered a key to the secrets of his past, like in MKDA? Or shit, maybe he could even discover that he's the Chosen One to house the spirit of the original Dragon King of Outworld?

Or if you reeeeally wanna give him his race back, why not have him live out his actual story from MKA when he works with the Red Dragon to clone back his fucking race in the only way he can.

I'm not going to pretend that the developers haven't made some shaky decisions with their story, but Jesus Christ, it's not as bad as some people are making it out to be. Reptile has seen more shit in this game than almost any other character, and somehow it's not enough. I'm looking at complaints in this thread that his gameplay looks the same as before, that it looks boring, when he's vomiting acid traps and throwing people around with his freaking tongue. I'm looking at complaints that his costume is boring (wuh?) and looks too much like his MK9... but no one can agree on what kind of look would be better. Right now, Kano, Kitana, and (sort of) Quan Chi are the only returning characters with designs that go way beyond the normal level of updating (largely because characters generally don't need off-the-wall updates), and Reptile's bone armor is entirely new to the series.

Come on, people. I hate to sound like an apologist all the time, but it seems like the internet has spawned an entire subculture that conflates "critical thinking" with "being critical." I'm not even wanting people to just shut up and enjoy. I'd simply rather see more critiques that are less reactionary.

Well freaking said sir!

I honestly doubt Shinnok is a, playable character. I forsee him being a non playable boss in a portion of story mode if that. It depends, on, how the Neatherrrealm War goes. I'm sure we'll see some of it. Roster is good so far I just, wonder about new additions and if more will be revealed before launch. Cause really they, could hold back the majority as suprise so we won't know everything before actually playing the game

Like myself and others have speculated, revealing anyone from the comic would basically spoil the comic which is why I don't see anyone like Takeda or Erron Black being revealed anytime soon.

Exactly. They never said anything about there be more new than returning, people just jumped the gun when they saw 4 new characters revealed at E3 with only Scorp and Sub representing the vets.

The fanbase. A lot of us have grown up and are actually willing to accept change for a new generation of Mortal Kombat though.
We have plenty of games to relive the old MK now.

And NRS has alienated their fanbase before.

I'll take a bite at this.

Reptile's story never changes, true. At least for Scorpion, they tried different things. For a while, they tried there being no bad blood between him and Sub-Zero. Then they tried him being the Champion of the Elder Gods only for him to go full vengeance mode again. Reptile has always just been a lonely henchman. The one time he actually could've been interesting, they morph him into a separate character completely and he acts as a host. Even in Deadly Alliance, he comes into contact with Nitara, finds Kahn dead and there's a part where after Kahn's death he just "wanders aimlessly." Seriously, the fuck? All of the other stuff that happens to him, say in Armageddon, is never definitely addressed and could be considered pure hearsay and in Deception you could say he's the "Chosen One" except he's just used as a sack of meat and all the royalty and pizzazz goes to another newly created character entirely.

The big difference here is Tanya has only been in 2 games where stories mattered (not counting Armageddon as aside from Konquest mode, we know zero fucks about what happened to everybody). She still has untapped potential and could perceivably do something interesting with her. Reptile has been playable in 4 games and has had zero progression what-so-ever in terms of character development. That's 4 different times where Boon & Co. sat around each other and said "What should Reptile do?" "Uh I don't know, protect the games antagonist?" "Sure, sounds good, next!" They've shown time and time again they have no clue what to do with him as a character. Some of these lesser used characters, in my belief, have a better shot than our scaly friend at getting better, more interesting character development because there isn't a well established track record of using the character at a disservice in terms of story. Does that mean I want them in over Reptile? No, they can exist in the same game and I'm happy to see him back. However, since Reptile keeps popping up, if they are going to use him then I want to see him used BETTER because his character is capable of it.

I'm not going to touch on gameplay as we simply haven't seen enough of it for me to make a definitive decision, although I don't have a problem with anything I've seen of that. Still not too keen on his outfit but that's not very important to me anyway.

Baraka407 Wrote:
After so many games, it's harder and harder for them to impress long time fans with characters that have been in the game several times. But those characters draw casual players, so I think some almost see them as a necessary evil at this point.

I think trilogy era characters are getting a bit more hate now because MK9 was basically trilogy era fan service with the real or imagined promise that they'd be moving on from the era to a new era, which they certainly seem to be if the comic is any indication. So now there's more of a "seriously? Again?" Vibe from some fans for trilogy reveals.

This is true to a point. It'd be nice to see some of these characters start to sit out so we can truly see a "new generation." If them saying they don't know how to continue is true and not just interesting interview soundbites to make a headline then that is what needs to start happening and I have no problem with it. Sure, they don't have to be gone forever but they need to start sitting 1 or 2 games out and rotating. They are seemingly clearing out the pack of post Trilogy characters with the comics but that worried me none as "no one in MK is dead forever"..... except for maybe Hsu Hao,

Even with my favorite, Kenshi, if he makes it into this game and I get to see him interact with his son and watch him in story mode, I'll have no issue with him sitting out MK11 and MK12 as long as when he comes back they actually have something great and new for him to do outside of Shang Tsung revenge and Special Forces agent on a job, you know? If that's what it takes for these characters to receive further, interesting, exciting character development then fuck it, I'm all for my favorites sitting out for a while and lettings some fresh faces come in before they tag back into the ring.

But if they are truly going that route and cleaning house so-to-speak, we already got a fairly incredible fan service release with MK9 for the Trilogy characters. Now we need some closure for the post-Trilogy era as well.

Woah woah woah, we don't refer to that game....

Doesn't exist, nope you can't make me.

Honestly? I wouldn't expect anyone post MK4 other than Quan or Kenshi

Would it surprise me if we got Havik, Fujin, Shinnok & Dairou? Hell yeah it would and it would be so freaking awesome.

I'm not opposed to any character in the MK universe except for Hsu Hao because no thanks you can keep your BDSM Fetish to yourselves NRS. plus comics y'know? So I shouldn't have to worry about him.

But we all know where the money makers come from at the end of the day...the golden era of MK. Could we see a new golden age with MKX? absofuckinglutely and it's really started to look that way. My hype is off the charts.

I really think if Reptile's reveal trailer had showcased all three of his variations, in-depth in his gameplay such as other characters, people wouldn't be lashing out so much on Reptile.

For the little gameplay we got from Reptile, with no info about his three variations, and only really got to see some special moves + X-Ray + his Fatality.

I think Reptile will be one of the favorites, gameplay wise, when it's all said and done.

I strongly disagree with the order the characters are being revealed , they threw out of the window any possibility of surprise of old characters getting revived during the story. This is a lot less fresh and risky that I originally expected/hoped for. Way too much MK9 for my taste, specially given the amount of source material they have to create something new and different.

I was disappointed in this video. I am happy to see Reptile back, but the only thing that caught my attention in this video was Kung Lao's humor. His design looks better than MK9, but I expected an even better design. Hopefully it will eventually rub off on me.

On a positive note, it's good to have the original secret ninja back, and this is the third MK2 reveal. hopefully we will see more before we go to MK3 and so on.
