Topic says it all. Who is the most powerful character in the Mortal Kombat universe?

Here's how I'd rank the top ten:

1. Onaga
2. Raiden
3. Liu Kang
4. Shao Kahn
5. Shinnok
6. Ermac
7. Shujinko
8. Sub-Zero
9. Quan Chi
10.Goro

Honorable Mentions: Shang Tsung, Kintaro, Blaze, Moloch

In depth:

1. Onaga

He easily overpowered Raiden and the Deadly Alliance. Shao Kahn feared confronting him alone and had to poison him to get his spot. It took Nightwolf's Sin Eater and Shujinko destroying the Kamidogu to defeat him. Basically, he is the most powerful character in the continuity without question. No one can defeat him one on one

2. Raiden

The God of Thunder nearly defeated the Deadly Alliance on his own. The DA had taken out the six main heroes of the series before hand, but Raiden managed to hold his own in a one on two fight.

3. Liu Kang

Defeating Goro, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn twice and Shinnok easily makes Liu Kang the strongest mortal in the entire series. You could make the case that Kang is stronger than Raiden and might be able to put up a fight with Onaga on his own. Kang also easily overpowered Shang Tsung in the opening of MKDA and it took a sneak attack to kill him.

4. Shao Kahn

Shao Kahn has been the emperor for how long now? You have to be pretty damn strong to command that kind of fear mirite?

5. Shinnok

As a fallen elder god I'd expect Shinnok to be able to hold his own in a fight with just about anyone.

6. Ermac

Despite not really doing anything until Deception, Ermac easily qualifies for this list. Hell, you can argue he should be higher on the list. Taking out Jax, Kung Lao, Sonya, Kitana and Johnny Cage at the same time has got to mean something.

7. Shujinko

Exploring the realms and learning techniques from so many fighters must mean Shujinko is one pretty tough old man. As much as people don't like him, you have to admit Shujinko is pretty damn tough. Defeated Onaga, nuff said

8. Sub-Zero

From a generic Lin Kuei assassin to having powers that rivaled gods, Sub-Zero is really one of the few characters to show evolution in not just character but strength as well. Some of his accomplishments include stopping the three cyborgs, defeating a Tarkatan Militia and defeating Sektor to claim the Dragon Medallion.

9. Quan Chi

Quan Chi has managed to ruin the lives of Scorpion, Noob Saibot, Sareena, Shinnok and much more. He has also bested Kitana, Shang Tsung, Scorpion and others in one on one fights before.

10. Goro

Champion for nine straight Mortal Kombat tournaments easily makes him one of the strongest characters in the MK universe.

So yeah, that's my list. I would love to hear your opinions on who the strongest characters are

When did quan chi best scorpion in battle? And scorpion is pretty powerfull I mean in MkD he killed onaga and beat up a few tarkatans along the way he also killed sub zero who beat up 4 elemental gods shinnok and I think quan chi. Basically I'm saying scorpion should at least be in there. I agree with onaga being top dog and raiden is pretty stong as well.

1. Onaga
2. Raiden
3.Ermac
4.Liu Kang
5.Shao Kahn
6.Scorpion
7.Sub zero
8.Shinnok
9.Shujinko
10.Kintaro I think he's stronger than goro

1. Onaga
2. Raiden
3. Liu Kang
4. Shao Kahn
5. Shinnok
6. Ermac
7. Shujinko
8. Sub-Zero
9. Quan Chi
10.Goro

Quan Chi killed Scorpion in a one on one battle during the events of MK:DA. Uh... Scorpion did not kill Onaga, his ending isn't canon. Shujinko and Nightwolf defeated Onaga.

1) Onaga - Probably the strongest without much question. Barely phased by Raiden, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung combined.

2) Raiden - Obviously as a god he'd be much more powerful than most. He has very high levels of magical powers plus he's skilled at combat. He also has the ability to send mental messages to past versions of himself apparently, which is a pretty nice ability to have up your sleeve.

3) Liu Kang - With so many victories it's hard to deny him. I assume his power is drawn from his piousness and strict sense of honor. If you fight with him in MKD against Onaga, he actually does more damage than anyone else. I think he's basically "the chosen one" and just has that special amount of mortal power to him.

4) Shang Tsung - I think you guys are discounting him for some reason. He's probably the most powerful spell caster in the series. He has access to thousands upon thousands of souls, which he can use to his advantage by knowing their every though. Not to mention he can disguise himself to be anyone.

5) Shinnok - He probably could rank higher than this, but I'm not sure exactly what the extent of his power is. He has never been very well written in the series. He's a fallen elder god and he seems to draw strength from being in the Netherrealm, so much so that he overthrew Lucifer and made it his own realm.

6) Shao Kahn - I don't think we've seen the true extent of his power, but one of his assets is that he's a military genius to have ruled Outworld for so long and overthrow Onaga in the first place. Being "powerful" is a combination of a lot of things.

7) Ermac - Much like Shang Tsung, he has access to a large number of souls and it makes up his power. As a telekinetic he seems to possess great control over his power. Not to mention he easily defeated five of Earthrealm's best warriors at the same time.

8) Quan Chi - He's probably one of the best one on one characters in the series. He seems to always come out on top. Again, to be a powerful character takes more than just physical strength. He's a skilled necromancer and is extremely crafty in a one on one battle.

9) Sub-Zero - Late in the series it was evident Sub-Zero was dramatically increasing in power, able to do much more with his kori powers. The dragon medallion is a key source of his strength, and so long as he has it he can only get more powerful as he learns to wield even greater magic.

10) Shujinko - Probably the second strongest mortal, without any sort of augments like a medallion. He has tirelessly trained all his life, and it was good enough to take out Onaga apparently.

I believe people are discounting Shang because Quan Chi is the more powerful of the two sorcerers according to Vogel's own words. Probably primarily due to the amulet, but he is also about a billion years older and more experienced.

I think I'd rate Shujinko very, very highly now too. Deception never said anything about the abilities he absorbs wearing off or anything, so he's probably in fact still walking around with the powers of like 15-20 people at once, Liu Kang and Ermac included. Y'know that scene in MKA Konquest where Taven finds him in the dungeon and he's like "I got caught on purpose because I plan to beat Kahn, Onaga, Shang and Quan Chi all at the same time"? I bet he wasn't just being cocky, he actually could've done it.

Also, Scorpion's probably dead even with Sub-Zero. He got upgrades in DA and Deception too. His just aren't tied to articles of clothing.

Quan Chi's strength depends a lot on his amulet, much like Sub-Zero, and I think that's a clear problem. It requires them to have these devices to be more powerful. Shang Tsung has passive abilities that are just a part of who he is, and like I said in my write up those are very useful abilities to have.

Scorpion is not even with Sub-Zero. There's just no proof of that besides people really liking Scorpion. The only way Scorpion qualifies for this if the fight takes place in the Netherrealm, where it is known he gets stronger the longer he remains there. But I put my rankings on neutral ground since I don't think it's very fair to base power on where you are happen to be fighting at.

The only major ability Shang has that Quan doesn't know is soul stealing. Which is very useful, yes, but I still think that if Quan didn't have the amulet (and keeping in mind he barely even knows how to tap into the thing's power so it's not even buffing him all that much), he'd still take Shang. He's just too much older and more knowledgeable. Experience counts for everything when it comes to spellcasters because it's all about how many spells they've learned and how much arcane studying they've done in their lives. Shang has the cheat of gaining knowledge and memories from the souls he steals, but I still don't think it's enough.

They're not too far apart, but I think Quan without the amulet would win about 6 times out of 10.

Well I was thinking more about the ability upgrade the Elder Gods gave him than the "gains power the more time he spends in Hell" thing. He's supposed to be strong enough to kill Onaga, Shujinko just got there first.

I don't think of Scorpion being that high up either. He's probably stronger than a lot of characters, but I don't see how he's more powerful than Fujin, for example. Fujin could probably be equal with Raiden, but it's really hard to say since we hardly see anything of him.

People also seem to be forgetting about Taven. Son of a God, and a powerful sorceress. He held up against the Black Dragon, Tekunin, Lin Kuei, Red Dragon, as well as destroying the Tengu clan. He defeated Sub-Zero, Noob Saibot, Fujin, Mavado, Kintaro, Goro, Raiden, Scorpion, (possibly) Blaze, and all of Shinnok's apparitions in his spire.

He kicked a lot of ass, I don't know where I'd rank him though...

1. Onaga
2. Raiden
3. Shinnok
4. Quan Chi
5. Liu Kang
6. Shang Tsung
7. Shao Kahn
8. Taven
9. Fujin
10. Sub-Zero

I don't even know if that's close to accurate. There is so much we haven't seen of these characters so it's really just a wild guessing game.

I love these hypothetical lists...

1) Onaga - Yeah, when you wipe out an Elder God and two of the most powerful sorcerers in history without batting an eyelash, I'd say that makes you rather powerful. Though, with the Kamidogu destroyed, he obviously slipped in power afterwards and wasn't able to even topple Shao Kahn in his own realm (at least not at first...)

2) Raiden - Thunder god and millennia-spanning badass. Even if you kill him, he can always come back since he's, you know, IMMORTAL.

3) Shinnok - A fallen Elder God whose power almost rivals Raiden. The only reason he's not consistently labeled as a powerful threat is because his storyline potential, and his design, were lacking. If he was a big, towering brute like Kahn or Onaga, we'd likely bump him up a bit.

4) Shao Kahn - He's, quite frankly, the man. His strength rivals that of the strongest MK characters. His experience makes him almost as deadly as the Elder Gods themselves. He's a brilliant strategist, a ruthless dictator, and a powerful necromancer. Shang Tsung was said to have learned the black arts from him personally and even Goro cedes to his power and authority.

5) Blaze - I'm talking Armageddon Blaze, the one empowered by the Elder Gods with enough strength to potentially wipe out the entire MK cast all on his own. Supposedly he lost to Taven, but we don't really know, do we?

6) Fujin - Elder Gods in general are powerful beings. Fujin would likely be no exception. He's an immortal, elemental deity capable of sending tornadoes into your skull.

7) Sub-Zero - Sub-Zero is basically as close as a non-god came to being a god... enough so that the Elder Gods in Armageddon got worried enough to decide he should be dealt with, even though he wasn't even picking a fight with them. When someone is powerful enough to make the entire Elder Gods decide to kill him "just in case", you've grown pretty damn powerful.

8) Scorpion - I use him selectively. On the mortal plane, he's a force to be reckoned with, for sure, but he pales in comparison to many other fighters. In the Neatherrealm, however? The demons themselves fear him and he is almost god-like down there. Considering a few matches have lasted in the Neatherrealm, I'll say that works for him strength-wise.

9) Liu Kang - He's the de facto "hero" of MK because he beat all the big bad boys back home... and while I don't doubt he's possibly the best human fighter, he is less about power and more about cunning, speed, and a deliriously fortunate streak of good luck... which ran out around MK:DA. While I don't like him myself, you have to respect a man who can defeat one of the most powerful sorcerers, the strong-arm ruler of an extradimensional empire, an Elder God, AND can make a centuries-old amazon princess get hot under the collar.

10) Quan Chi - The better, darker, more evil sorcerer. Quan Chi has Shinnok's amulet, which helps, but story-wise I think he could've been just as chaotic without it. This is an evil sonuvabitch, black as tar inside. He enslaved and did terrible things to Sareena for years. His actions resulted in the demise of Shinnok, Liu Kang, Scorpion, and the original Sub-Zero. He handily bested Shang Tsung in one-on-one combat. He personally slaughtered many of MK's best heroes, including Kitana in one-on-one combat. He's ruthless to the extreme, is possibly older than Onaga, and has wrecked more lives than Kahn. Even if he's not bursting with raw power, he's left the most powerful impact in the MK universe.

Blaze can't be that strong. I mean, every character in the MK universe tried to fight him in Armageddon. Even Mokap wasn't afraid to face Blaze. Just saying

Also, Crow how is Shang Tsung above Shao Kahn?

Shang was the one who suggested to Quan Chi to kill both Kang and Kahn. Even with Quan Chi helping ad not possessing Kang's spirit, they took him down. Shang Tsung is more or less the second in command after Kahn. For all it is worth, MK2 and 3 depended on his actions and cooperation. Hell, the two of the combined are enough to take out Raiden after handling Kung Lao and Kitana.

Story wise Onaga is simply the strongest. I just wish I could see Blaze do more with his power, to give me a better idea of his overall strength. You'd have to be a little naive not to believe otherwise, Onaga probably IS the MK logo & we just don't know it.lol

yo Onaga over-powered Raiden, Quan Chi, & ShangTsung without the power of the Kami in Deception. Ermac is just one of your favorite MK slaves depending on the power of combined souls of warriors that passed away. Oh and before anybody gets on my ass about whta I say. Onaga was resurrected because all of the Kamidogu were brought together, so yes, he over-powered those three, but he had the Kamidogu to help him out.

1. Onaga - The One Being Incarnate
At full power, Onaga is a fucking monster. Not only is he one of the largest kombatants, but he is also largely immune to magic based attacks, can fly, has tremendous strength, and can breath fire. With all the Kamidogu, no one person could defeat him.

2. Liu Kang - The Champion
Liu Kang has bested Goro, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, and Shinnok. He has been trained since a young age to fight, and is a very spiritual warrior. He is fast, strong, skilled, and incredibly determined. Not only that, but he is capable of turning into a Dragon. With the exception of Onaga possessing all the Kamidogu, Liu Kang is the most powerful Warrior.

3. Shao Kahn - The Conqueror
Shao Kahn has ruled Outworld for countless Millenia, crushing all who oppose him. The only person to ever best him in single combat is Liu Kang, nobody else has ever managed to defeat the Emperor. He is incredibly strong, possesses a vast knowledge of dark magic, is very skilled in wielding his wraith hammer, and is obviously a skilled fighter and strategist. He isn't the Emperor of Outworld for nothing.

4. Goro - The Prince of Pain
Goro is the warrior with the most wins in Mortal Kombat. He won 9 straight tournaments, with his only loss to Liu Kang. He bested the Great Lao, who beat Shang Tsung in his prime. He is fast, strong, skilled, and his four arms and size advantage don't hurt either.

5. Raiden - God of Thunder
Although Raiden is not an Elder God, he's still a very powerful god. He defeated Shinnok when he attempted to take Earthrealm for himself, and nearly bested the Deadly Alliance. He's a skilled, wise fighter with powerful lightning abilities and the power of flight.

6. Shinnok - The Fallen Elder God
Shinnok is the ruler of hell, and a fallen Elder God. He is obviously powerful, but he has never really done much to show just how powerful he truly is. Raiden defeated him when he attempted to take over Earthrealm, and he was taken down by Liu Kang during his invasion of Edenia. While he is obviously a force to be reckoned with, his true power remains to be seen.

7. Scorpion - The Ninja specter from hell
Scorpion is the poster boy of Mortal Kombat, so it's makes since for him to be obscenely powerful. He defeated the Elder Sub Zero who as some great accomplishments himself, and he only got more powerful when he became the Champion of the Elder Gods.

7. Sub Zero - Chinese Ninja Warrior
The Elder Sub Zero, and the younger brother when he had the Ice Medallion are both powerful warriors. The older brother took down four gods and Quan Chi. The younger brother took down thee cyborgs, and a Tarkatan horde. Both are skilled fighters, trained assassins, and adept at using their Ice powers.

8. Quan Chi - The Netherealm Sorcerer
Quan Chi is powerful, no doubt about it. It's been shown that he is a both a better sorcerer and fighter then his fellow sorcerer Shang Tsung. While he is a formidable adversary, I do think that he relies more on deception then actual power. I think if he was to go toe to toe with one of the Kombatants I ranked above him, he would lose.

9. Shang Tsung - The Soul Stealing Sorcerer
While not as powerful as his former partner Quan Chi, Shang Tsung is a still a deadly warrior. He is a skilled sorcerer, and he has knowledge of many fighting styles thanks to his soul stealing ability. He was the Champion of Mortal Kombat for some time, but he doesn't have any other notable achievements. He was defeated by the Great Lao, Liu Kang multiple times, and only managed to take down Shao Kahn (or at least his clone) with the help of a more powerful ally. His morphing ability is useful, but just because he can turn into somebody doesn't mean he is as skilled as them.

10. Ermac - The Enigmatic Warrior
Ermac's Deception ending definitely showed that he is a step above the rest. His powerful telekenetic abilities allow him to fight and hold off multiple adversaries. While that is definitely a great feat of his skill, they were brainwashed and he didn't actually defeat them, he merely held them off while Liu Kang snapped them out of their mind control. I think he's definitely powerful, but I'm not sure if he's as strong as the people I put above him.
