I guess his story is fucked up because of the latest game...? I don't see it, and it's not because of the die hard fan crying inside of me trying to get out and snap at every person who hates this character, I just thought his character was, okay.

Although I didn't like how he died, that was just silly.

I don't think Kuai Liang can even make up his mind on what he wants to look like. One moment he's masked, the next hes scarred and unmasked, then he's masked again, then suddenly he's Tommy Lee Jones, then suddenly he's the Shredder, and now he's an undead ice cream machine. Make up your mind, dude.

The problem that bothers me is MK2 and 3 Sub-Zero's story showed a much more clear and obvious path of him becoming a hero.

He was supposed to be conflicted about being a ninja, his MK2 story is all about how different he is from his brother, because he doesn't kill people if he doesn't have to, that he's only being Sub-Zero because it's family tradition. He's even willing to forgive and be partners with Scorpion. And his MK3 story is about him actively going "no, I've had enough" to the Lin Kuei, leaving the clan, and joining Raiden. It wasn't just about not wanting to be a robot. It was about not wanting to be a bastard who kills people for money anymore too. Which all sets up the point in Deadly Alliance where he turns the whole clan into protectors of Earthrealm instead of assassins.

Everything in there, he CHOOSES to do. He chooses not to be a ruthless killer. He chooses not to be a robot. He chooses to stand with the good guys. He chooses to go back to the Lin Kuei and fix them to be the way he wants.

He has agency in his own life, control over his own destiny.

But in MK9, Sub-Zero doesn't DO things, things are done TO him against his will. He spends the entire game being either an asshole or a victim.

In fact, NOBODY in MK9 is written as being anything but a victim. Raiden, Liu Kang, and Kitana used to be the main characters of MK1 thru 3...but in MK9, even they don't CHOOSE to do things either, they only react to things that're happening TO them, mostly bad. They're victims the whole game too. No matter what character you like, MK9 is a depressing story about the protagonists losing, failing, and dying. The only person in all of MK9 who has free will or control over any situation is Quan Chi. Which kind of makes HIM the main protagonist. Which is super-fucked up not just because he's a bad guy, but because he's not even supposed to be IN MK1 thru 3! He's a background character! He's gone from NPC to the winner of the story!

But back to Sub-Zero...

First, he doesn't seem to care whether he kills people or not. He WANTS to kill the person who killed his brother, he freezes a dude in a giant block of ice just because they won't tell him what he wants to know, he IGNORES Sonya's pleas to help Jax because he doesn't care about anything but himself, and he basically says the only reason he doesn't kill Reptile is he's in a hurry. And on top of all that, he beats Scorpion and tries to finish him, only failing because the cyborgs interrupt him.

Basically, he's kind of a dick. He's not a good person, he's not a hero, he's not even conflicted about being an assassin.

Then, he and Smoke never actually CHOSE to leave the Lin Kuei because they didn't want to be robots. Instead, in MK9, they left just to go to Outworld without permission to find out about Bi-Han's death, and intended to return when they were done. They didn't KNOW Sektor and Cyrax were being turned into robots. Then, Sub-Zero is captured and NO ONE tries to save him.

Before MK9, the only version of the Lin Kuei automation we ever saw was the cartoon Defenders of the Realm, which depicted Sub-Zero and Smoke escaping automation as this heroic scene where after being told about the cyber-initiative, they run away from the temple and Smoke is captured because he covers Sub-Zero's escape, and Sub has survivor's guilt about letting Smoke sacrifice himself for him. It may not have been canon, but it was really heartfelt and heroic.

In MK9, nobody is sacrificing their self heroically to help their best friend get away, Smoke just stands there and watches because Raiden makes him. And he only feels bad about it for ONE brief moment and we never see Smoke show regret or sadness again.

Next, Sub-Zero only joins Raiden's side because they saved him from Sektor and Kahn. He didn't CHOOSE to be a hero, he just finds himself there because the good guys deprogrammed him. And finally, his story ends with him dying of a single punch to the chin and having his soul enslaved by Quan Chi.

Not to mention, that 5 seconds after she hits them all with a banshee scream, all the collectively agree that the best plan of attack is to use...Their fists. Instead of, y'know their own freaking super powers or even weapons. At least Nightwolf went out like a boss. Pathetic.

Guys, I can't thank you enough! I'm notorious for being a flip-flop when it comes to decisions and favorites, and I haven't checked this thread in quite a while, but now that I have, you people have convinced me to firmly stand by my beliefs. Well Done!

Fire & Ice is better together than apart.

It's the only scene in the entire game I would have liked to see redone better. The whole premise was a great idea, just it's kind of a poorly done execution. I would so greatly agree, that the heroes should have shown more of a fight than just get beaten easily like that. It could have been shown longer, like this is their fate coming to an end, let's actually see them fight to hold it rather than just give it to Sindel like that.

But, who doesn't want to get their asses whipped by Sindel? She's boss.

That scene had a lot of potential but they half-assed it.

Also, to be on topic with my post, Sub-Zero is my second favorite character in MK. He's boss.

The same Sindel who's hardly had anything to do in the series up until her "big" moment in MK9? Boss, schmoss.

Honestly, the most noteworthy thing about Sindel's character is that the Gay and Trans members of the MK fandom almost unanimously say she's their favorite character. It's like she's an LGBT mascot without being any of those things.

Probably because she looks more like a drag queen than a real woman. Which is actually kind of a shame, because it's not the bluescreen actress's fault she looks like a dude, it was that wig and makeup. Lia Montelongo was pretty hot as Sareena.

I could say this for a lot of characters, Cage had nothing going for him except dying, being resurrected and then have nothing going on. Now look at him, he'll most likely be the next main for the next game.

I'm not sure why people are making a big deal out of something that was meant as a harmless joke. Or why liking a character that happens to be Sindel...

I am sorry for offending you and will no longer bash your taste in characters, but to justify Johnny Cage (considering he's another of my favorites) he actually had some highlights throughout the original canon. For example, he is the one that gathered the Forces of Light and then Kenshi led them into battle. That's pretty bad-ass to me, at least.

Sub-Zero, however, has had such great character development. He's a character I acknowledged as a villain at first (considering the animated and live-action MK movie depicts him as such), who over the years has transformed into one of Earthrealm's Chosen Warriors and greatest defenders. If he or Scorpion could just kill Quan Chi already though, *sips some coffee* that'd be great....

Because internet serious business for many jackwagons who wish to remain anonymous. Not that I'm pointing out anyone on here, specifically....
