The general consensus on Motaros MKA design
03/21/2014 03:10 PM EST
I'll admit it, it's one thing I have a hard time letting go of, because Motaro's gameplay in MKA could have been so unique, so memorable and instead we got...that thing.

So was it necessary? Did Motaro absolutely have to be included in MKA, and did he have to lose his hind legs? In my opinion, no. But I admit, he had a comically perverse appeal. It looked like they just found some random chump on the streets, covered his torso with paint, glued fake horns on his head, and made him wear some ugly fur pants, complete with a nearly immovable tail. As a WWE wrestler, he might not have been so laughable, but as a MK character, and as Motaro, in particular, he was a spectacular failure.

Just look at his mug on the character select/ladder screen. He looks like a sad, washed up has-been. His victory pose makes him seem like he's getting up from a bar, spouting gibberish. All that was missing was the bottle in one of his hands. If that wasn't enough, he was one of the few throwable bosses. I played as him recently, and seeing Stryker grab and smack him around like some jabroni, my god, what a sight.

As I said, Motaro's MKA self is so perversely funny, than the developers could almost be forgiven for butchering the character. Easily a bigger joke character than Mokap or even Zebron could ever be. I'm all for making the bipedal version a separate character, but I'm not sure, however, that he'd be as funny if he wasn't "THE" Motaro.

Armageddon's whole problem is they just plain didn't have near enough time to make a REAL game.

That's why everybody was reduced to two stances instead of three, so the remainders could be spread out amongst the new characters instead of mocapping any new fighting styles for them.

That's why the Fatalities are that weak, generic kreate chain system instead of actual, individual finishing moves. (Granted, something had to be done to accomodate the kreate-a-kharacter mode, but THEY could have had the kreate-a-fatalities, or copied finishers from the existing characters the same way they copy moves)

That's why not every weapon and special move is even available in KAK.

That's why nobody has a bio and everybody's ending is like two paragraphs and no pictures, instead just in-game footage of the character doing one of, like, four repeating kata animations.

Could Motaro have been left out instead of mutilating his character design so that he'd fight just like everybody else? Perhaps, but then he'd be the ONLY character in the entire franchise who's not on the roster, and that's just as much of an insult as having two legs is, it's a No-Win-Scenario.

The bigger insult, I think, is that the game immediately following MKA was a retelling of Motaro's greatest moments and he wasn't even a character in it, he's just a cameo in story mode.

At least Armageddon tried to acknowledge his fuckin' existence, even if they did a poor job of it. That's more than can be said for MK9, the game where Centaurs are supposed to become the heads of Shao Kahn's Extermination Squads and march in hordes over the countryside, only having ONE Centaur EVER be visible on screen, having him die after like less than 60 seconds of total footage, and never once mentioning their rivalry with the Shokan, which fucked over TWO characters' stories, his AND Sheeva's.

I hope they will advantage Minotaro's cool alternate costume in a future quadpedal iteration. The Minotaur appeared because the developers specifically inquired the fanbase whether or not Motaro should make it, knowing how hard it is to put him into a 3D game. The answer was yes.

There were online biographies for MK:A characters and Khameleon also lacked from the initial versions (PS2 and Xbox). MK9 was truly a wasted potential for Motaro, considering they could have made him part of a Story Mode/Challenge Tower exclusive challenge in which he would have stood still, blocked, zoned and jabbed. Perhaps Motaro's days are not yet over.

I bet Motaro is going to be the sub boss in the ladder in the next game. He almost definitely went to hell and would definitely work for Shinnok.

I thought Motaro's MKA design was making the best of a bad job really. The PS2/Xbox/GC era was stale when MKArma came out.

If the game had proper bios and explained what the hell happened to everyone it would have been ok.

MKA seemed incredibly rushed; hence no bios, dial-up Fatalities, and one fighting stance per character. I think Motaro was just the casualty of a rushed game and couldn't be properly fleshed out. Even if he was in it as a four legged centaur, that would take a massive amount of work to get him working as a playable character. Him working as an unplayable boss with just four or five attacks could have worked though if Midway thought it was worth their time. Disappointing he didn't have a bigger role in MK9 though; the tech and resources to make him a sub-boss was definitely there.

I was thinking since Motara went down quite easily, how it would be good if there was a more powerful Centaur than Motaro. What kind of modified Centaur would u like to see. There are lots of things they can do like make a Two-headed Samurai Centaur with plant manipulation (nature powers) or Earth Powers like Tremor. He can be the sub-boss.

Not bad ideas, but I'd rather the normal centaur race get their day in the sun before they go all crazy with variations.

If there was a different kind of Centaur, he wouldn't have gone down so easily like Motaro did. Such as a Samurai Centaur or Robot Centaur made of Steel.

Motaro "went down easy" because he was fighting Raiden.

I don't know if you know this, but when you shoot lightning at a robot, it has a power surge and dies.

In fact, you can see a whole bunch of robots die in a single bolt of lightning when Raiden saved Smoke.

OK then forget the robot Centaur. A Samurai Centaur would've probably survived that hit with his Samurai armour. If there was a Witch Centuar maybe she could've dodged the attack with witchcraft in Motaro's situation. They can even make an Angel Centaur since Heavenrealm is lacking characters.

Motaro should come back, I mean he's a cool looking sub-boss who everyone enjoyed (or at least majority of the fans), and it's a shame that they couldn't find a way to work him in this game. If he's to return for the next game, have him be someone we have to fight in story mode as a sub-boss. That would be awesome if they could do it.

Motaro is dead. Can we not have another Centaur take his place. We have 3 Shokans. I would like to see a different kind of Centaur, stronger, faster and more powerful than Motaro.

They make fun of you too. Just sayin'.

But anyways... re-reading the first post, I don't ever want to see that thing come back either. It can be joked and mocked for the rest of our gaming lives. But the truth it, no one liked two-legged Motaro... actually, I can't even call it Motaro. Armageddon should be a clear reminder never to butcher a character that is well-liked to a point where people refuse to call it by the name they've been given.

Let us all just agree that this is to never happen for future games. And hopefully, if Motaro can ever really be worked in another Mortal Kombat game, let it be soon. I really miss fighting against him and would definitely love to see a return. That "death" gives him more of a chance to return seeing how the Netherrealm is obviously going to be playing a big role for the game.

Although I liked Minotaur Motaro, he should stay centaur for the sake of status quo. They should make a new Minotaur character & give him Minotaur Motaro's moveset.

No, pretty much all are against you. The mods are just duty-bound, like when cops forced to protect Klansmen.

Anywho, death is meaningless in the MKverse. I'm sure if they find a way to get the centaur mechanics to work properly then he'll make his return. Also, who knows, they may actually attempt to write in whatever conflict caused the Shokan to curse the centaurs.

I'm pretty sure Ninja_Mime is with me, as I believe Swedish people are the best looking because the vikings stole the hottest babes to be their wives.

Why must Motaro return, why? Why not have variations of Centaurs like we have variations of Shokans?

I've always wanted to see more of the conflict between the Shokans and the Centaurs too. I hope they have something about that in the future.

Pfff, you pick the one mod who hasn't been here in over several months. And I doubt he'll treat you like his "Swedish brother from another mother."

Because people actually LIKE Motaro and thinks he deserves a better chance than what he's gotten. And not everything needs to have another one be brought in.

Ninja_Mime is with me in regards to the matter that Swedish people are the best looking because the vikings stole the hottest babes to be their wives. He knows this and I know this, so we have common interest.
Motaro is just plain brute strength. That's why I say there should be other Centaurs with other abilities, like an Angel Centaur or Witch Centaur who can use witchcraft trickery OR A Samurai Centaur that has Samurai Armour. Now that Shao Kahn is dead there should be a boss who's strong like Shao Kahn and a Samurai Centaur achieves this.

Uhh, no, you don't speak for someone who's not here anymore, and I strongly doubt he's that retarded to think the same way as you and your Swedish fetish.

1.) They're not going to randomly make a new Centaurian character if they can't even get the mechanics right for Motaro to play fine within these games.

2.) Motaro hasn't even gotten a fair chance after his debut in the third game. Trilogy gave him a shitty fatality with no story or ending, and Armageddon basically made a mockery of this character. Why should he get ditched for some half-ass thought up angelic centaur that doesn't even exist in the Mortal Kombat universe?

Even I look at that "angelic centaur" and laugh at it. That's something you see on Deviantart.

3.) You want a new boss since Kahn is dead? Uhhh... you do realize that we have Quan Chi and Shinnok working together and were shown at the end of story mode that they're the next threat. Either you obviously didn't play the story mode all the way at the end, forgot (seeing how your wishes for having purses in the game clouded your memory), or just being plain stupid and not caring that there's actually a story that needs to be followed.

Dir dir dir.

He doesn't think, we know this. Stop thinking and start knowing. Not only that but caveman chose Blondes as their ideal partner. So it makes sense with Swedish platinum blonde thing.

Motaro was in MK9 because that game was about going back to the roots. MK10 isn't about going back to the roots. I know about Shinnok and Quan Chi. But I said they are not power houses or a boss that is about brute strength like Shao Kahn. So a new Centaur could be that boss that is about brute strength. At least Motaro had a sendoff where all leading villains gathered together when Motaro died. Sheeva is still alive. The least scariest Shokan.
