So roughly threee weeks have gone by, and generally that is enough time to start seeing balance in a fighting game. It is still way too early to make tiers, but by now it should be easy to distinguish who is good and who is bad.
I have to say that from the experience i have had playing the game and watching various other videos, the game seems pretty balanced, everyone has devastating combos, and no infinates have been found yet post version 1.01. The only thing found is the parry glitch but that will be fixed.
Overall the characters seem to be on a level playing field, i hear most often that smoke is the best, but even he doesn't seem overpowered.
So what are your thoughts? is this game fairly balanced?

I got pwned by at least 12 playing as smoke
In terms of nothing but playable characters:
The general feeling seems to be that Kung Lao, Raiden and Smoke are the best. Everybody else seems to be good to average, and I'm only hearing bad things about Baraka in comparison to others.

lol i agree the bosses super armor is bullshit, but they aren't playab;e so they dont count. Ya i've heard Raiden and Smoke the most for being the best, but agian they dont seem to completely destroy everyone else like some other fighting games top-tiers.

i think its all about dedication and skill and if you watch tournoment videos all characters have there ups and downs. although i think the only one who needs more moves is shang tsung he only has like 3 or 4 not includeing the different ranged progectiles.

Not as many people are loving Smoke as the other two that you mentioned, but I think he gets my seal of approval. Smoke's entire game is capitalizing on whiffs, since he can cause them at any point with his specials.

No. It isn't.
For example, you cannot tell me Kitana plays anything like Sub-Zero, Sheeva plays anything like Smoke, and Sindel plays like Noob Saibot, etc, etc.
On topic, though, I'd say the game is balanced for the most part. Just be careful near corners, and when fighting characters like Kung Lao and Ermac, who can pull insane combos out of thin air. Bosses are, obviously, cheap and powerful.

Kung Lao and Cage have slight edges.
Raiden is God tier online because his teleport is way too fast.
Baraka has issues with range.
Everybody else is pretty level. Smoke and Ermac are very beatable you just have to be extra patient. I routinely total them with Nightwolf.

not even close to being balanced
kung lao
lui kang
kratos
smoke
reptile
ermac
scorpion
sub zero
are the most broken people in the game, plus there are some exploit combos that do way to much damage
but then they have shit like kano whos my man but has weak ass chains and barraka and sheeva's chains
the different play-styles are awesome but some things are over or underdone, they can be patched though

The great thing is that even if its not balanced, it will be, because it can be.
I personally hope that NRS doubles the roster, simply because the gameplay is spot on, and no matter how many characters you throw at the game, they can always be tweaked.
Too big of a roster has always been a concern with most fighters, but most fighters come from Japan, where balance issues are used as an excuse to milk more money out of a franchise ( talking to you street fighter ).
There is no reason people should worry that new characters may be over powered because it can always be fixed.
Props to NRS !

Baraka & Sheeva are fucking fantastic, but hard to learn properly.
The PSN hack gave me time to use every character and learn combos.
I thought it was obvious but I guess not, Baraka is supposed to end combos with special attacks. All of his moves and combos are cancelable, ALL.
Example:
FP,BP,BP, Blade slices or Back+FK,BP, Chop chop or blade lunge.
He's actually REALLY fun.

When you compare him to the rest of the cast and think of matchups, he definitely is. His best attacks are of the defensive variety (Blade Spin and Chop Chop being anti-airs), his projectile is painfully slow, no teleport, poor damage output, the list of indictments go on with Baraka.
Sheeva has some tools to work with, though. Probably the best anti-air in the game with the grab, teleport stomp is pretty good, but her issues are that she's slow and she's a huge target.

Fuck statistics.
I'm going to beast with him and I'm going to have fun doing it. I haven't had any problems with him the offline or the two times online before the PSN hack and I sure as he'll am not giving up on him.
Coincidentally I use Sheeva & Baraka in tag ladder alot and they make a food team. Thats why I walked into this topic confused and outraged at the comments.
Half I bet use Smoke and scorpion online.....

More power to you dude, because no matter what tier lists say, it all comes down to personal preference. Not that they should be totally discounted, but in the end you play with who you want to play with.
Scorpion is my main, but I've been using him since the demo so he's who I'm most comfortable with. My other main is Liu Kang.

Ermac happens to be my favorite character but I haven't gotten around to learning him in earnest yet. In due time, I will.
