PS Vita Introduces Exclusive New Features
Full Kontact!

Multiple video previews for Mortal Kombat for the Playstation Vita have been rolled out in a coordinated reveal of new features! Gamespot had first blood on a hands-on tour of the game with NetherRealm Studios Producer and master of the much touted gameplay arts, Hector Sanchez!

IGN, Destructoid and PlayStation.Blog are giving the coming release more facetime with yet more promo demonstrations.

The handheld Komplete Edition version of the game adds new feature content, including a Test Your Balance mode that takes unique advantage of the accelerometer features of the handheld device. Sixteen additional costumes as alternates will be a popular new addition -- including outfits for the four DLC additional characters (Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, Freddy Krueger), who are all included within the game!

Running at a console equivalent 60FPS (Frames Per Second); the "high fidelity" Vita experience has been spared no expense, with particular attention for recreating all the tropes that made Mortal Kombat a success on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with a few added incentives. Previously confirmed touchscreen fatalities add new accessibility to the trademark finishing moves, inviting fans new and old to take a hands-on approach to the bloodiest aspects of the award winning fighter.

A refurbished Challenge Tower boasts 150 new challenges, with much requested new features like the chance to play as Shao Kahn -- which will unlock bonuses at regular intervals. Challenges include a variety of new innovations, including touchscreen attacks and mid-fight screen cleaning, for the blood soaked neatfreak. It's here that new costumes will be unlocked. New trophies and artwork bonuses have been added to Vita modes, as well.

Sony exclusive guest character, Kratos (God of War), will also return in the Vita version. Mortal Kombat arrives for the PlayStation Vita in Spring 2012. Gamespot have an unconfirmed release date of April 2nd. The Komplete Edition hits home consoles February 28 [full story].

Following a developing story; Gamespot report that digital copies of PS Vita games available for sale on the PlayStation Network will carry a reduced price. All Vita games are confirmed to be available for download. A Sony representative told Gamespot, "We can confirm that PS Vita games downloaded from the PS Store on PSN will carry a discount. Further details are not being revealed at this time, but please be on the lookout for an announcement in the very near future." 2011s Mortal Kombat recently joined the PSN store, for the PlayStation 3 [full story].

WB Announce Mortal Kombat for PS Vita!
MK Hits PlayStation Vita Spring 2012!

Mortal Kombat for PS VitaRumors as far back as November of 2011 [full story] of an upcoming Mortal Kombat release for the Sony Playstation Vita handheld system are finally coming to fruition. This comes just days after Sony Director of Hardware Marketing, John Koller made a quick mention at CES 2012 of Mortal Kombat's existence on the platform. [link] Previously rumored to be called Mortal Kombat: "Vitality", the press release on The Wall Street Journal's Market Watch closely confirms the new title is being developed by NetherRealm Studios which will include several new gameplay features as well as release set sometime as soon as this Spring. From Market Watch:

BURBANK, Calif., Jan 17, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces Mortal Kombat will ship for PlayStation(R)Vita system in Spring 2012. Developed by NetherRealm Studios, the game delivers an experience designed specifically for on-the-go gaming with brand new gameplay features and content developed exclusively for the new handheld device.

"The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011's Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita," said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. "The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform."

Selling more than three million units worldwide in 2011, Mortal Kombat became the highest-selling fighting game of the year and has won numerous "Best Fighting Game of 2011" awards including Spike TV's 2011 Video Game Awards, Official Xbox Magazine and GameTrailers.com.

In a triumphant return to the game's original mature presentation, Mortal Kombat offers over-the-top fatalities and cringe-worthy X-ray moves. Update 1/19: Since our original update we have received official confirmation from NetherRealm Studios of the validity of this press release. As well, confirmation comes from the official Mortal Kombat Facebook page, as well as in the form of a tweet from @WB_GAMES_UK confirmng its Spring 2012 release date. Information regarding the introduction of Mortal Kombat at the Vita Hill Social Club is forthcoming, according to our sources.

As well,  lead Ed Boon has broke the silence on the Official U.S. PlayStation Blog today, revealing some of the key new gameplay features. From the interview:

Ed Boon: The fundamental necessity is quick access to gameplay, whether it’s online or locally. The mobile gaming experience is shorter bites of time. We identified the Challenge Tower as a perfect fit for mobile sessions, so we expanded it greatly for PS Vita. There are actually two Challenge Towers in the PS Vita version, and the new one has 150 challenges that are exclusive to PS Vita. A number of those challenges use PS Vita’s hardware features: the touch screen, the accelerometer. [...] In terms of gameplay, we’ve always wanted MK to be as accessible as possible. For example, you can touch your X-ray meter to execute an X-ray attack. For fatalities, you can “slash” the screen with the appropriate inputs — say, away, away, up — to execute the fatality. It makes some of the more difficult fatalities easier and it’s fun to slash at your screen to fire off a fatality. I was surprised by how engaging it is.

Ed Boon also shares that Mortal Kombat will be keeping its frame rate of 60 fps, however the game will have a more limited polygon count which Ed claims will not take too much away from the overall gameplay experience. We will report more as this breaking story develops.

MK (2011) Up for Best Fighting Game!
Hot off the heels of yesterday's announcement  [full story] of two Warner Brothers properties being nominated for Writers Guild Awards, Mortal Kombat (2011) is back in the news today as the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) announced that NetherRealm Studios flagship title is nominated for Fighting Game of the Year in the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards (IAAs)! Though Mortal Kombat is not mentioned specifically in the official press release, it is important to highlight that another popular Warner Brothers property received a nod for Game of the Year as well appearing in five other categories:
CALABASAS, Calif. – January 12, 2012 – The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) today announced the finalists for the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards (IAAs). More than a hundred titles were played and evaluated by members of the Academy’s Peer Panels. These panels, one for each award category, are comprised of the game industry’s most experienced and talented men and women who are experts in their chosen fields.

For 2012, the blockbuster game Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (Sony Computer Entertainment Company) leads the field with a total of twelve nominations. Showcasing the depth of great games introduced in the past year, several titles earned multiple nods for an IAA, including ten nominations for Portal 2 (Valve Corporation), nine nominations for L.A. Noire (Rockstar Games), and six nominations each for Batman: Arkham City (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment), Battlefield 3 (Electronic Arts) and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda Softworks).

The IAAs will take place during the D.I.C.E Summit on February 9, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas. In conjunction with a partnership with GameSpot.com, you can see the entire event live on their website at 10:30 PM EST. Mortal Kombat Confirmed For Evo 2012!
Earthrealm Defends its Second Tournament at the 2012 Evo Championship!

Like déjà vu, Mortal Kombat is once again making an appearance at the Evolution Championship Series. This marks its second year on the world's stage and shows that our favorite game has the legs to last. The Evo Championship Series is perhaps the world's best known fighting game competition and the game's second appearance in it assures its position as one of the premier fighting games of this generation. We would like to congratulate NetherRealm Studios for this achievement! Shoryuken's live podcast Wakeup SRK featuring Mr. Wizard, Evo organizer, confirmed MK's appearance as of 7pm PST today. Furthermore, it appears that, unlike last year, all DLC characters (Kenshi, Skarlet, Rain, Freddy Krueger) will be tournament legal. Kratos, the PlayStation 3 exclusive character, however, will more than likely remain banned.

While Mortal Kombat as a series had experienced a long drought of competitive exposure, that drought met its end last year at Evo 2011. And by the looks of it, the Mortal Kombat team, led by Ed Boon, has turned the tides 180 degrees and are marching full force into the competitive landscape with no sign of slowing. At the outset, NetherRealm Studios made it clear that this game was designed with the hardcore fighting game enthusiast in mind while simultaneously offering enough accessibility and versatility to be played by novices with little difficulty. Those early rumblings stretching back to E3 2010 have proven themselves true.

While this is an important achievement, the real goal of any tournament is to generate participants and spectators. Please support Mortal Kombat in this tournament and all others, both big and small, online and offline. It is through that passion that this great game can continue to live.

We at Mortal Kombat Online look forward to seeing how this year plays out and are eager to congratulate those skillful enough to stand in the winner's circle.

The full lineup of games officially appearing at Evo 2012 are:

  • Super Street Fighter IV: AE 2012 Edition
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Soulcalibur V
  • Mortal Kombat
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • Street Fighter X Tekken

MK GameTrailers Award, IGN People Choice Awards, & Ed Boon's Top 10

What better way to start a Happy New Year than to announce another 'Flawless Victory' for Mortal Kombat!

GameTrailers Game of the Year Awards have crowned Mortal Kombat as the 'Best Fighting Game of 2011'! GameTrailers not only praised Mortal Kombat's 'ambitious', 'inspired' and 'bold' resurrection along side its 'creativity', gameplay and all of its content, they also stated that the game "redefines the single player mode" and is "in every sense of the word, a game shaker for the genre".

Check out their excellent Best Fighting Game Trailer in which Mortal Kombat is heavily praised and featured (with lots of fun MK moments, characters, and Fatalities) along side the rest of the tough competition.

2011 was a good year for NetherRealm Studios and Mortal Kombat. The game has already claimed the title of 'Best Selling Fighting Game of the year' and has also been crowned 'Best Fighting Game of the Year' by Spike's VGA, the Golden Joystick Awards, and the Official US Xbox Magazine among others, but, good news are far from over.

Keeping up with this good record, the game is now featured in IGN People's Choice Awards and you can support and vote for Mortal Kombat by scrolling down the page and clicking the 'Green Thumb' next to the game's name. Vote soon for your favorite! Poll ends January 17th:

On another note, Mortal Kombat's one and only, Mileena, was featured in IGN's Worst Dressed Video Game Characters of 2011. The fun but questionable list also features popular and favorite characters such as Nathan Drake (from 'Uncharted') and Poison Ivy (from the 'Batman Arkham' series), however there is actually no mention or analysis from the editor concerning Mileena's costume, unlike all of the other characters that were mentioned in his list.

Finally, Giant Bomb has updated with a nice article featuring Ed Boon's Top 10 Games of 2011. Check out the article to read what Ed Boon, co-creator of the MK series, has to say about his favorite 2011 games. Can you guess which ones made his list?

Mortal Kombat Online would like to wish you all a Happy New Year! Expect some surprises in the upcoming months.
