Kenshi Story Vignette Trailer Released!

NetherRealm Studios have released a story vignette, focusing on the next incoming DLC kombatant, the blind, telekinetic swordsman; Kenshi via gaming website - 1up.

"Kenshi, a proud swordsman was promised the legendary Sento sword by a strange old man who was actually Shang Tsung in disguise. When he took the sword, kenshi also released ancient warrior spirits that were all consumed by Shang Tsung,
He was then left to die in the dark, blind; but alive. Kenshi was then guided out of the tomb by the mystical sword. Led by his senses and fuelled by revenge, Kenshi believes in an eye for an eye..."

"Kenshi believes in an eye for an eye..."

Below is Kenshis official Biography from the Official Mortal Kombat Website:
"For years the swordsman Kenshi traveled the world in search of worthy opponents. When a mysterious elderly man named Song offered to show him the location of Sento, an ancient sword worthy of his abilities, Kenshi succumbed to pride. He followed Song to a tomb wherein lay the Well of Souls. When Kenshi retrieved the sword, spirits of ancient warriors spewed forth, blinding him. Song then revealed himself to be Shang Tsung. He consumed the souls, leaving Kenshi in the dark labyrinth to die. But Sento called to Kenshi. It led him out of the tomb and revealed his lost heritage as a descendant of the warriors who had been buried there. Kenshi vowed to slay Shang Tsung and free the souls of his ancestors..."

Kenshi is released Tuesday July 5th on Xbox Live and Playstation Network for 400 Microsoft Points and $4.99 respectively. Hhe is also one fourth of the Season Pass which is available now!

Kenshi Trailer Debuts on Gamespot!

Hot on the heels of Mortal Kombat DLC headliner Skarlet's official release, a trailer for the second scheduled downloadable character has appeared on Gamespot. The blind warrior Kenshi, announced with Skarlet some time ago, is prepared to take the arena by storm with his telekinetic flurry!

Originating in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Kenshi was perhaps the most popular character introduced during the 3D era. His original storyline had him missing the first tournaments, but could have very well changed due to Raiden's interference with history. His rivalry with the sorcerer Shang Tsung, who blinded him many years before, can now be realized at a much earlier date!

Kenshi's gameplay is quick and powerful, and makes use of two of his iconic character traits. His telekinetic powers differ greatly from fellow psychokinetic Ermac; Kenshi uses his mind to project his aura forward, dealing damage with what is effectively a hologram image of himself. In addition to this he also relies heavily on his signature katana weapon to spill the blood of his opponents to the arena floor. A new special move is present in which he is able to reflect a projectile back at the opponent with a slash of his sword, following that he uses an X-Ray attack which ends with him slamming the hilt into the skull of his victim.

According to Gamespot, Kenshi is due for release worldwide on July 5th, next Tuesday. His price will no doubt be the same as previously released Skarlet's.

For the latest information on Kenshi, stay tuned to @MK_Online for all the updates!

DLC Price Correction and Skarlet Delays for European PSN
Skarlet Coming Next Week; Compatability Pack and Cyber-Assassin Skins Follow

Warner Brothers have apologetically announced technical delays in the European release of downloadable content for EU and UK PlayStation Network services.

Skarlet Arrives in Europe Next Week!

Skarlet will not be available via PSN until next week, sometime after which the complimentary Compatability Pack (with Classic Sektor & Cyrax Skins) will be released in the region as well [full story]. Prices for the existing Classic Skin pack have been corrected for the European PSN store, adjusted to an appropriate £3.19 and €3.99 for respective areas.

Skarlet should already be available for Xbox Live throughout Europe. It is not known if delays will effect the recently revealed July release of Kenshi and Rain, or subsequent DLC offerings.

Apr. 24: Reports are coming in that Skarlet is already now available for PSN in Europe! Warner Brothers UK have also confirmed that users who paid incorrect inflated prices on DLC will be reimbursed soon.

Consumers who purchased pack at the incorrect price will automatically have the difference refunded to their PlayStation Store wallet ASAP.

Ed Boon discusses the Wii U and Mortal Kombat possibility!

NetherRealm Studios Creative Director and Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon sat down and discussed his interest in the upcoming Nintendo, Wii U with Gametrailers:

“When thinking about the Wii U and controller, I would like to think we will do something innovative and cool. We are all very excited. Whenever there is new hardware we start to think on a bigger scale. When you see that screen and controller in there, to me things start connecting in terms of what we can do with our game, enhancing the experience.”

This wouldn't be the first time Mortal Kombat has platformed over, the Wii U's predcessor the Wii had a port of MK: Armageddon on it which included much demanded kombatant Khameleon who was omitted from the Xbox and Playstation 2 versions. Whilst this doesn't confirm that we will see a Mortal Kombat title on the Wii U, feel contented that interest is being expressed from NetherRealm Studios.

The Wii U is an upcoming Next-Generation console featuring Full-HD graphics, a revolutionary touch-integrated controller and precision motion controls amongst other innovative specifications. More news on this story once it becomes available!

First look at Rain and Kenshi via Xbox Live Advertisement!

In conjunction with the release of Skarlet and the Season Pass, the Xbox 360 Dashboard has been updated with a promotional look at whats included in the now available Season Pass.

Presented as an interactive menu, it reveals the appearances of Rain and Kenshi and their anticipated window for release. Rain's attire is reminiscent of his MK: Armageddon design with some details more relevant to his ninja roots. Kenshi on the otherhand has a faithfully created MK: Deadly Alliance look with some more contemporary adjustments. Both are expected to hit Xbox Live and Playstation Network somepoint in July. The unnanounced mysterious fourth character is planned for release in August.

Additionally, the next two Klassic Skins to be included in the second Compatability Pack belong to Noob Saibot and Smoke Whilst we don't currently have a definitive date for their release, be sure to keep all eyes on MKO as soon as the information emerges!

For those in Europe and the United Kingdom, some of you can download Skarlet and the Season Pass today as they have become availabe a day earlier, but in other cases it may still be tomorrow!

Update: It has come to our attention that Skarlet is lacking her previously seen Alternate Costume and she doesn't appear within the games Nekroplis directly. We aren't sure what the reasoning behind omitting her alternate costume is yet as it was stated all DLC kombatants would be packaged with them. More on this as it becomes available!

NetherRealm Studios MKast! Series 2: Episode 3 - Skarlet!

NetherRealm Studios have released their next installment of the MKast! This third episode focuses on the upcoming character, the blood-born creation of Shao Kahn's bidding, Skarlet!

"Bloodthirsty Skarlet is a skill-based character and probably the fastest on the roster so far..."

The video is laced with gameplay footage of Skarlet in action and is commentated by the games Lead Designer, Paulo Garcia and Assosiate Producer, Erin Piepergerdes. Discussed throught this episode is Skarlets history, being born from an urban legend that back in Mortal Kombat II a glitch would cause Kitana to turn red, this then fuelled Skarlet's actual existence in the latest Mortal Kombat. Paulo even goes as far to state that she is the most skill based and fastest character on the roster so far!

Skarlet Trailer Revealed and Rain Confirmed along with more Klassic Costumes by IGN!

Rumored Mortal Kombat II warrior Skarlet has been making waves for the duration of the month. Following up her appearance at this year's E3 and her addition to the official site, the bloodthirsty warrior debuts a pre-release style story trailer narrating some of her backstory. A creation of Shao Kahn's through sorcery and blood itself, Skarlet has been released as a last ditch effort to discover if Quan Chi has any intentions of betraying his alliance with Shao Kahn.

The release date of this first downloadable character has now been confirmed as June 21st; just one short week away! In addition, Warner Bros. has announced that to accompany her will be a "compatibility pack", which will allow those who do not wish to purchase Skarlet to play against her online with those that have. This pack is free and will contain two alternate costume skins at no charge to the player; Skarlet's accompanying pack will contain UMK3 inspired costumes for Cyrax and Sektor.

As previously mentioned, four planned DLC characters will be released in total this summer. MK Online broke the story of one of these characters being Kenshi back in April. It is now known that the much sought Rain will be another of the four! Kenshi and Rain's silhouette's appear for a moment near the end of the Skarlet trailer, along with a third, yet unknown character. The oft-requested purple ninja's confirmation should thrill his many fans, as well as the continuously prodded Ed Boon on Twitter.

Mortal Spotlight: MKO Q&A with Jazwares Joe Amaro!
Joe Amaro of Jazwares Talks MK in Plastic in Special MKO Interview!

Sometimes even action figures need to be... CAGED!It was way back in January that news of a new wave of Mortal Kombat action figures first broke [full story]. With the reshuffling of the MK license under Warner Brothers, Jazwares returned to the picture to pick up where they left off in 2007 with the conclusion of their range that included characters from Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.

Jazwares makes their triumphant return with an initial wave of four action figures inspired by the new video game -- Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and Johnny Cage [pictured below]. Featuring fifteen points of articulation and accessories directly inspired by the games, they are the6" leading wave that is accompanied by 3.75" versions of the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 male palette swaps, and the Lin Kuei cyber-assassins.

With the series' summer release right around the corner, Mortal Kombat Online talked to Director of Product Development and Brand Manager of Mortal Kombat, Joe Amaro, to learn more about what goes in to the making of the series, and what is still to come.

[MKO]: How did Jazwares come to be the makers of the official Mortal Kombat action figures?
[Joe Amaro]: We have always been fans of Mortal Kombat from the very beginning. The process is like dating, we meet, we talk and then if we like each other we start our relationship.

What goes in to the selection process for characters that are made?
Warner Brothers is involved in every step! As fans we choose the characters we would like to see first, and then we discuss it with everyone involved. Sometimes apporval determines who will ship next.

Does the game's 3D engine help at all in the design process?
Sometimes it does, but we mainly use the game as reference.

What does it take to go from design concepts to a final sculpt?
The process starts with a concept, then a sculpt is made from that. We make a tooling model to make a metal mould called a "tool." Plastic is then injected into the tool to make the final figures. Warner Brothers and the game creators are involved in every step. We do not proceed to the next step until we get approval from WB.

How hard is it to work under the intense scrutiny of a loyal fanbase? Are criticisms ever useful to the process?
We are fans also, so it's difficult to balance the creative fan side and business money side. We try our best to please the fans, and their input is very valuable to us. It always has been, just ask our Sonic fans! We always are open to constructive criticism, [for example] sometimes our Sonic fans point out our mistakes, and we try to correct them.

Scale, anatomy and detail has been a focus for the fanbase. Is there a general design philosophy that Jazwares adheres to?
All that is determined by the game creators at WB. We sculpt the figure using the reference they provide. We sculpt the figure and we show it to them. They give us comments back on what to fix and what they like. We try not to add any of our own artistic interpretations.

Extra hands for Johnny Cage are a somewhat unique feature. What inspired this choice?
He really doesn't have any weapons so we wanted to include something with him that made sense, rather than just adding a base.

How do you decide what comes packed with each character?
We try to include what make sense. Sometime it comes direclty from WB.

There seems to be an ever growing demand for points of articulation in action figures. How do you balance that function with design?
We try to include as much articulation without destroying the sculpt. All the MK figures will have ball joints all over! In the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, and we added an ab crunch.

There's a feeling that current MK figure designs favour a younger market. Is there any consideration for producing more sculpted, less articulate editions for an older fanbase?
No, we are not targeting a younger market. We know the primary market are the fans. We are trying to produce highly detailed figures with as much articulation as we can muster! I am not into static figures, we leave that up to the statue guys.

Jazwares is producing a range of 'retro' designs from MK's early past. Which era do you think makes the best action figure, then or now?
Yes we are! I think they both make great figures!
They both have tons of great designs.

With the characters having been redesigned so many times over the years, are there any characters or designs in particular you wish you could've made?
Yes! We just have to be careful that the characters we choose have a distinct look. We are starting with the very first MK games. Later will plan to go through all the games all the way to Armageddon.

Always the bridesmaid -- Unreleased Kintaro Sculpt.Kintaro was created for a previous line, but never released [full story]. Why was that, and could we see Kintaro released at some point in the new series?
I know, I sculpted him. Right after Goro the line died.
Midway decided that they were no longer going to license any product. Yes, Kintaro will return, but probably not my sculpt.

Any clues what might be in store for future releases?
We have plans for tons of figures! You can also let us know who you want to see [via Facebook]. Again, we value fan input so the more you give the better the line will be!

Jazwares have confirmed that Sonya Blade will appear in the next wave. There is also a Toys 'R' Us exclusive coming to San Diego Comic-Con International, in July. SDCC is also where the final episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy will finally air, starring Cyrax and Sektor [full story].

You can find more Jazwares at Jazwares.com, or on Twitter, @Jazwares. Mortal Kombat Online would like to thank Joe Amaro and Jazwares for their time and look forward to more from them in the future! You can also find MKO in the realm of social networking @MK_Online, or via Facebook. Don't miss last week's Q&A with MK National Champion, Justin Wong [click for more]!

Skarlet Gamespot Screenshots and Official Site Bio!
Created From the Blood of Defeated Warriors, Skarlet is Shao Kahns Enforcer!

Skarlet debuts on Official Website!Ed Boon might be talking about the potential future for Mortal Kombat, but right now the focus is squarely on downloadable content and the debut of first of four characters, Skarlet!

The bloodsoaked beauty has joined the ranks of the official website, where a new character render and biography text can be found.

Once a fan-imagined rumor, Skarlet has become a full fledged fighter in the MK canon, an enforcer for Shao Kahn created from warriors blood! Her plotlines bring her close to Quan Chi, whose machinations have stretched across the entire MK timeline.

Shao Kahn has many warriors under his command, but his trust lies solely in the fighters of his own creation. Warrior blood gathered from countless battlefields, fused with sorcery, produced his most effective enforcer yet: Skarlet.

An expert tracker, she preys on those deemed enemies of the empire. During kombat, Skarlet gains strength from her opponent's blood, absorbing it through her skin. Shao Kahn has a new mission for this formidable kombatant: discover Quan Chi's true intentions and kill him if he plots betrayal of the emperor.

Gamespot have three new screenshots from the E3 floor, featuring Skarlet in combat against Johnny Cage and her male precursor, Ermac.

With no official date for the release of Skarlet as DLC, you'll have to make do with screenshots and the announcement trailer. The Klassic Costume DLC pack is currently available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for a $4.99US value [full story].

Ed Boon Discusses Skarlet and MK Future on GTTV
Series Co-Creator Talks Skarlet, DLC, and Developing Technologies on GTTV!

Series co-creator and Executive Producer, Ed Boon, made a relaxed appearance on GT.TV, live from E32011, to discuss the future of Mortal Kombat and official E3 unveiling of new character, Skarlet!

Boon describes Skarlet and her blood-themed fatalities as some of the most "disturbing" in the game, with exclusive first-look footage showing off the baptism of gore that is her Blood Shower, as well as the partial decapitation of her "Pez dispenser" finishing move.

Skarlet debuts as downloadable content in the near future, with Kenshi confirmed to be part of DLC plans into the summer that will include two additional extra characters. The E3 weekend has also seen the release of previously store-exclusive klassic costumes in a single pack [full story].

Developing technologies from the major console providers sparked interest for the future development of MK. Boon discussed PlayStation Vita and Nintendo Wii U as potential platforms to rekindle the portable fighting game experience for MK fans. Boon's focus for the future on consoles includes a grander vision for the MK story mode, expanding on a cinematic presentation of adventure glued together by the fighting mechanic. He describes the 2011 story mode as 'scratching the surface' of what is possible.

On the subject of the MK story, the co-creator laments on the creative freedoms of a time travelling plot. With no certain plans for the future, Boon assures fans that, as usual, they have not seen the last of their favourite characters, regardless of their 2011 fate. The possibility for NetherRealm Studios to expand their horizons into other genres is a goal.

There is still no date set for the release of Skarlet or future downloadable characters. Find the full GTTV episode on GameTrailers.com, and more Skarlet here on Mortal Kombat Online.

Legacy Finale to Debut July at Comic-Con International
Final Webisode to Debut July at San Diego Comic-Con!

Fans of Mortal Kombat: Legacy will have a long wait for the final episode. Typically released midnight Mondays, the ninth and final episode will be held off for a debut at San Diego Comic-Con International, held July 21-24.

Series director, Kevin Tancharoen, broke the news via Twitter [June 5th], where he also showed off the Cyrax costume helmet that will feature in the finale, earlier in the week [full story].

'Bad News: there will be no new episode next week. Good News: we will premiere the new episode at Comic Con!!!!'

The final episode will feature Shane Warren Jones and Peter Shinkoda as Cyrax and Sektor -- Lin Kuei warriors who are mechanized to become souless cyber-assassins. Introduced to the series in Mortal Kombat 3, the characters spent their early episodes programmed to hunt rogue clansman, Sub-Zero.

Cyrax and Sektor in the new Mortal Kombat!

The plot of the Legacy finale is expected to detail their transformation from men to cyborgs. The pair will appear in full cyborg form, with designs inspired by the recent Mortal Kombat video game, as seen in trailers.

Mortal Spotlight: MKO Q&A with National Champion Justin Wong!
Justin Wong (Jwonggg) Shares His Thoughts on MK in Special MKO Interview!

MK National Champion, Justin Wong. Photo: Kara Leung. With a list of accolades that would put any 'achievement hound' to shame; Justin Wong has been world champion of some of the genre's most competitive fighting games. Having claimed titles at the highest level in games like Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Street Fighter IV, the accomplished competitor set his sights on Mortal Kombat last month, when Performance Design Products staged their first US National Tournament, in Las Vegas, Nevada!

From a field of almost two hundred kombatants fighting for a winning prize purse of $10,000 -- "Jwonggg" emerged victorious in Sin City to add his first US National Mortal Kombat Championship to the list!

Keen to speak with one of Earthrealm's chosen fighters, Mortal Kombat Online probed the Supreme Kombat Champion [pictured in mortal form, right] for his thoughts on the burgeoning MK tournament scene, and what he has observed from the revamped gameplay engine.

[MKO]: What was your first introduction to MK as a series?
[Justin Wong]: I think my first MK introduction is probably on the SNES with Mortal Kombat 2. I definitely did not know what I was doing at all at the time, and I picked Sub-Zero because my favorite color was blue.

What are some of the high and low points you've observed as the series has evolved?
I didn't think much of it when I was young at all, but ever since MK9 came out, I took it as a new game and just had to figure out the mechanics and try to use my experience in fighting games to adapt.

What do you think about the Mortal Kombat tournament scene so far?
I think its still growing and it eventually will keep getting bigger and bigger due to the offline/online community, and player awareness.

In your list of achievements, how does winning the National Tournament rank?
It is definitely a big one just because it was labeled as a National Tournament. And it just feels good to win at new games because I feel like I am doing something right.

With the MK Arcade Kollection announced [full story], do you think the MK scene can branch out?
I will always believe that UMK3 will be in tournaments just because there is still a scene for it. Maybe I will get into it especially if the MK [Arcade] Kollection is coming out. I am a sucker for fighting games and especially ones with a scene in it.

Kung Lao featured heavily in the PDP National Tournament. What do you think makes him such a popular and effective character?
He definitely was a popular character choice. I think since top players were using him, everyone else realized that he is probably the best character in the game, and he could do a lot of things that characters cannot do that easily, like anti air, for example.

Which MK9 character(s) do you expect to really take it to Kung Lao over time? Will he remain a dominant favourite?
I do think Kung Lao will stay dominant as of now and for the future. But I think a good character that can [contend] with Kung Lao is probably Shang Tsung, just because I believe that Shang is a viable character and he can turn into Kung Lao and dish out more damage than the actual Kung Lao.

What's your personal Mortal Kombat [2011] tier list?
I really don't have one just because I am a "tier whore" in the game, but judging from my experience with the scene I can say that the best chars [in my opinion] are; Kung Lao, Raiden, Ermac, Cage, Cyrax, [and] Shang [Tsung] (in the future). [...] Everyone else I do not have a good rank.

"... I believe Shang Tsung is a viable character..."

There's been a lot of talk about Cyrax' bomb trap. Do you have any good tips to add depth to Cyrax' game, or on the flipside, to combat the trap?
Well the bomb trap is [definitely] super cheap, but that is what makes him really good. I believe that Cyrax players should not just focus on the bomb trap and focus more on his ex net which takes away the opponent's meter. The best way to fight against the trap is to either get lucky with breaking the throw, or save your meter to break out of the trap and also use super armor moves, or Raiden teleport to get out of the trap.

What do you think the key differences are between MK and games like Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs Capcom?
Obviously the main difference is the block functions but MK9 and SFIV are pretty similar [in my opinion]. It's just that MK is more offensive than SSIV. You can never compare Marvel to MK9, even with the tag combos. if you want to think about that, MK9 is pretty similar to the Tekken Tag series.

What can MK learn from other fighting games and what do you think they're doing right to stand apart from the crowd? Does MK2011 successfully carve a niche in the genre?
The only thing that MK players can learn from other games are footsies. The spacing of player's moves aren't as fluid as SF players. MK players are pretty offensive, but they don't have little tricks to trick the opponent for block strings or pressure strings. I do believe that MK9 is more exciting to watch than SF games and I would like MK9 to be successful in the competitive aspect.

How do you think MK can best improve, moving forward?
I think MK9 doesn't need to nerf characters but just buff up the lower tier, under used characters. Also, the game has only been out for a month, it's way too soon to say that 'this' char is unplayable, etc. In order [for] MK to move forward, it all depends on the community, and right now MK9 has to piggyback off the SFIV/MVC3 tournaments.

Do you think MK can hang with the competition in the longterm as a tournament fighter and have the longevity of titles like Street Fighter and MVC?
I believe that if MK9 keeps getting patches, it definitely will be longterm for fighting tournaments and I will always be supporting competitive fighting games.

MK is heading to Evo in July [learn more]. Do you think you'll get to play?
I am excited for EVO overall, and I believe that MK9 will have a strong turn out at EVO. I will be participating in it of course.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank, or send a shoutout?
I want to thank Intel, SteelSeries, Monster Energy, Kingston HyperX, Six Pool Gaming, Intel Extreme Boards, and Bigfoot Networks.

Legacy Final Episode Preview Teaser - Cyrax!
Shane Warren Jones will be Programmed to Fight in the MK Legacy Final!

With only one episode remaining in the online anthology, Mortal Kombat: Legacy series director, Kevin Tancharoen, has tweeted a final teaser image in the build up to his eagerly anticipated finale!

Programmed to Sever -- Cyrax!

Pictured is the helmet of Lin Kuei warrior-turned cybernetic assassin, Cyrax, who debuted in Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), programmed to hunt down former comrade and clansman, Sub-Zero.

In a series that has skirted direct reference to the canon of the video game source; the literal translation of Cyrax, clearly inspired by his most recent in-game design, is sure to be an exciting touch for diehard fans! The final episode -- with plot as yet unrevealed -- will also feature fellow LK- codename, Sektor, as glimpsed in early series previews.

Released freely to the web via Machinima; Legacy has garnered views in the millions, averaging between two and three million over the series, with a debut episode currently showing more than 10,900,000 hits! Featuring plotlines loosely inspired by the iconic cast of the Mortal Kombat franchise, reviews have been mixed, but largely supportive. The Houston Press heaped praise on Episode 6 [Raiden] for its return to the medical pseudo-reality of the Rebirth demo reel, while IGN expressed unbridled enthusiasm for Episode 4's [Kitana & Mileena] venturing back into the epic mythology that made MK famous.

The conclusion of series is expected to be followed by a Blu-Ray and DVD release in the near future, with extended episodes, uncut footage, and bonus behind-the-scenes fight scene content. The home video release was tentatively announced after the first episode by President of Warner Brothers Digital Distribution, Thomas Gewecke, who told Variety that "[WBDD are] incredibly excited about the creative product." Episodes can still be watched freely online:

Shane Warren Jones with director Kevin Tancharoen!

Shane Warren Jones [pictured above] stars opposite Peter Shinkoda in Episode 9 at the usual time of midnight, the morning of June 7. Both will appear in forms prior to their automation, before becoming Cyrax and Sektor in the much anticipated episode!
