both of these games are the underdog of the MK serie. Personnally I found MK3 more entertaining and I played it for more time then MK4, but I think that overall MK4 was a better product.
The introduction of weapons and background interaction in a 3-D environment was a big plus for me. UMK3 was way better then MK4 IMO but I believe MK4 was a little bit better then MK3.

I personally prefer MK4. I played it more and found it more fun than MK3. I actually prefer MK4 over all the MK3 games. In MK4 you could set the team mode into one on one matches with th computer which was fun. Also had more characters that I like and IMO the fatalities were much better.
I probably would've like MK Gold better than 4, but I didn't have a Dreamcast.

MK3 by far. I'd like to forget about MK4 and 70% of it's new characters.

I like MK3 better than MK4, but not by too much. I have been playin MK4 quite a bit recently and it's not as bad as everyone says here on MKO. It is really fun, me and my sister's boyfriend go into practice mode, pic two fighters and just beat the hell out of each other - there is no life-bar so you just keep beating the crap out of one another. It's great!
But MK3 has polished 2D graphics, great sounds and that apocalyptic vibe - something I really like. So overall MK3 just beats out MK4 IMO, I just hope practice mode comes back for MKD, so I can have those never ending fights again with my friend.
-MK4 has some good outfits as well, Reptile's ninja, Reiko's Edenian ninja look, Raiden's 1st and MK2 style alt, Shinnok's 3rd. In MKG Sektor and Cyrax look good too, unfortunately I've never played it. If I've forgot any good costumes from MK4/MKG, please list 'em for me...

Yeah, to you guys who trash the game: IT'S NOT THAT BAD!!! There are good qualities, it's lots of fun. It may not play like the other MK's - but they had to bridge the gap between 2d and 3d, and I think it's still worth owning, there are good characters and pretty good levels. I still play it cus it's still fun....

I think now I have to label my posts when they are opinions, so here goes.
Opinion Post:
If bridge the gap means nearly burning bridges, then yeah. They had to wait 5 years before they made another to give the game enough time to dilute itself from the minds of gamers everywhere, and even still people were commenting on how bad 4 was when MKDA came out, that game is a disgrace.

actually before MK4 came out, I had big anticipation for this game, I was reading magazines and following the progression on the internet.
Then when it came out, I went to the arcade with my brother and played it, I was sure the MK4 arcade would have been surrounded by a crowd, but nobody was around it, the arcade was almost empty 2 other guys were playing Tekken and a few others were on racing games.
My first impression was, this game is cool but it's boring... The characters were really traditional, maybe they had their lesson with MK3 who was a bit too over the top. Most models were looking the same(for example Jax was as tall and big as anybody else), no over the top background, the fighting was really similar to any other mK game even if it was in 3-D, except that the combos were looking like crap(not as real as in tekken for example).
But the more I played the game, the more I enjoyed it... the music was REALLY good, the endings were the best in any MK, FMV endings rules, the gameplay was easy to learn(a lot more easy then in MK3) I think that the fact that MK3 was asking for a lot of memorisation and quickness in the control turn away from the game a lot of average gamers, but MK4 was simple and cool to play. At the exception of the dodging moves who didn't always work, the game was easy and fun to play.
Btw it received some good scores in magazines, like 8 on 10 for the PSX version and 8,5 on 10 for the N64 version. don't remember which magazine however
MK4 was also a really violent games, with cool fatalities and cool new moves(like limb breakers, Quan Chi weapon stealer etc) it was less ridiculous then MK3 in terms of fatality and they did a great job, I can understand the disspointment of hardcore 2-D MK-fan but it was a necessary step I think.
MK3 on the other hand was difficult to play for the average gamer(particularly some combos and fatalities), and character, background, fatality, gameplay and even maybe storyline wise it was a dissapointment for most MK fans. It lost some of this user friendly, I can pick any character and play feeling that MK2 had, and we need to pratice a lot to be good.
MK3 also didn't have any secret at the exception of Smoke and the VS screen codes that almost nobody were using. Both games are ok for me, but MK4 was a bit more traditional and it's why I like this game better.

I think MK3 had a better feel, story, and, for the most part, better characters, but I found MK4 to be more fun to play.

I forgot about that weapon steal move. That thing was awesome! It would be sick if they could somehow incorporate something similar into Deception. Maybe only with the stage weapons.

UMK3 will probably always be my favorite MK. MK4 wasn't that bad tho... it's a pretty weak game if your right into fighters but I found it a lot easier to get my friends to play that game with me (those that aren't mk fans) since it has such an easy learning curve.
The graphics were..um will say decent at the time and the game play is fast. MK4 reminded me of MK1-2 but in 3D with run and combos. I still play MK Gold on my Dreamcast every once in a while.

MK4 Owns all!!! How could you say it was trash unless you played the PSX or 64 ver? Play the arcade one, it rules!
I agree. Don't play the home versions of MK4 or MKG. They're just cheaply made. The arcade version is just a lot more complete. Of course if you hate the gameplay of MK4 (I don't), it's not going to matter which version you play. But if you're into graphics and sound, none of the home versions compare to MK4 arcade. It's actually really good looking even today. I own an MK4 machine and play it often. Hopefully MATIII releases MK4 for the people who judge MK4 by the home versions while never playing the arcade version and also so I can put this damn machine in the garage or sell it lol.
