I liked it, a marked improvement over its predecessors. I was disappointed with MK2, don't remember why (maybe the Amiga version wasn't all that great), but I prefered MK1 much more. Then I came to Canada and picked up a PSX and saw MK3, so I picked it up as well. I seem to remember playing it quite a lot, and using Sub Zero and his cool ground combo often. I musta liked it cus I defintely remember hunting for MKT everywhere in '97, then I finaly got it!

Thought it was good. I remeber renting the snes version then finally bought it. My friend had rented it for the sega genesis thought it was pure crap at the time, but later the sega verson grew on me.

I thought it was great. I was extremely excited about its release, and I thought it was a step in the right direction. I was also extremely excited about MK4, and when I played it, it was an evolutional step, in the wrong direction.
"Holy crap this isn't as good as UMK3"
-Dave Christopher, some time ago
I joined the MK crowd in the late 90's when UMK3 was much more popular and the regular '3' barely saw the light of day. It wasn't until about the pre-new year (2006) where I really hit MK3 and UltimateMK3.
... And it was good.

I thought MK 3 was awesome. I loved the pace of it, and the playstyle. I still play it to this day.

I agree, it was a welcome departure from MKII.

I played MK3 the first time on my SNES (there are no real Arcades in Germany).
I liked it, but hey I was around 12 years old, I didnt cared about anything it was a new MK game so I was of course excited =)
I was fascinated about Cyrax and Kabal, and the modern look of the game.

I remember thinking of how modern it felt, the music was a lot different. Dunno what I thought about the combo system. One of the first characters I noticed was Kabal, wondering who that goofy looking dude was.

I thought it was too weird for MK,with the modern day stuff.
I also thought Motaro was Onaga at first too!

You know, if MK was just able to stick with the ancient feudal times, then future MK's would not be hard to make.
But, It was okay, but at the same time, they should have ignored the modern day, and went back to ancient/feudal China. That is where Kahn should have invaded. The subway, the street, the bridge, all too modern, ah god, it does not fit MK's persona at all.
As for the characters, cyborgs, and that stuff, was just fine.

When I pushed start the first time, just like all the MK sequels I looked at the Select Screen to see the roster and think, will it be good or bad? When I first looked at MK3's roster it was a little bit of a let down. The characters were too diverse. No masked human ninjas of any kind. Sub-Zero was there without a mask, but I still loved the mysterious masked figures. The one fighter I missed from Mortal Kombat 3 the most was Scorpion. When UMK3 was released I felt it was an improvement.

When MK3 first came out I remember being very happy that they actually varied the roster. I didn't want MK2's roster + a handful of new characters. I had found it annoying that fighters kept the same characters over and over and over again. So, when MK3 came out I was excited about how many old characters they dropped.
Than there was the gameplay. MK2 had been fun to putz around in in its day, but it was nice to immediately find more depth and variety.

I was so confused. The only people I recognized were Liu Kang, and Kung Lao. I picked Sub-Zero by accident, only realizing it was him when his name was announced. I had my ass handed to me by Sindel. One of the people watching said: "I wouldn't want her for a wife, lol".
3 was so different.
Ancient Asian tournament, Ancient feudal land... BAM! the inner city, robots, a non-Shokan sub boss, etc.

I could see the cyborgs, and Motaro (those were just fine), but they should have kept to the Ancient Feudal lands and Ancient settings. The cyborgs could have been manufactured at a place in the feudal lands, like in MK Annihilation.

Same here!!
I remember renting it from my parents before Christmas that year lol for my SNES and I played the game for hours literally it was great.
Then once UMK4 came out I was so excited, I could bust a load lol.And MKT for the N64 made me a very satisfied man.

I I was thrilled that they had done something about all the cheap moves. No Kitana fan crap, no Mileena drop, and nobody automatically ducked when you threw a projectile. I have to say that MK2 was great for multiplayer, but was almost unplayable in 1 player. So CHEAP! Not that MK3 didn't have cheap moves, but they weren't used ALL THE TIME. MK 3 did seem a little flashier, though.
