Lets put it this way...

It's a fighting game because of it's engine that you know...you can go and fight others with, BUT...

it's not a GOOD fighting engine...

At top play, all you'll have is Bo Rai Cho's and Dairou's and I can understand wholeheartedly why.

I can fight others on double dragon for the nes but it's not a fighting game. I can fight others on wrath unleashed but it's not a fighting game. I can fight others on trojan for the nes too. Don't forget the intense kombat of pong. Whether it's engine is good or not isn't in question we've established it's factually a bad engine. The question is can it honestly still qualify as a fighting game with an engine that bad. When there are action games with better balanced fighting you have some issues.
What else would you call MK besides a fighting game?

No matter how bad the fighting engine is, the game is still a fighting game.

It could be two stick figures with 1 attack each and it would still be a fighting game.

Whether it's good or not is a matter of quality, not genre.

Fighting games and adventure games are not the same thing even if they are both about fighting.

The line can be blurred though with side games.

Then it's not just a fighter, it would have many labels.

MK for example is a Fighter, strategy game, puzzle game and an adventure game.

The fighting part of it is still the main selling point so that's what it's basically considered as.
