Actually the word lesbian derives from ancient mythology. There was an island in the mediterrannian sea called Lesbos. It was an island inhabited ONLY by females and they worshipped the goddess Artemis I believe, or it could have been Aphrodite, I can't remember. And the women of that island were known as lesbians.

Actually it derives from the work of the roman poet Catullus, who wtrote the poem Lesbia. It was a honor nod to the greek female poet Sappho of the isle Lesbos. Lesbia is traditionally identified with the infamous Clodia, a infamous prostitute -reknown.
