Is Midway pushing the PS2 to its LIMIT ?

I think my favorite line programmers use during an interview or preview of a game is... "we are definatley pushing the system ( PS2 in this case ) to its limit".
I beleive that by saying this means the programmers are HARD at work trying to squeeze so much s*#t into the game that it will surpass all expectations !
Will the PS2 have to suffer minor tweaks that the XBOX wont have to? meaning that the PS2 version is a little below in terms of graphics and frame rate? ( reminds me of olden days of the 16 bit wars of sega vs. nintendo...nintendo was always a little better

nah i dont think they would go ahead and ADD an extra char. to the xbox.
what i was getting at is that i recently went to www.videogames.com and was reading about Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 for both the XBOX AND PS2. The review for the PS2 was lower and said " The PS2 version of Rainbow Six 3 can still be a tense and exciting first-person shooting experience both online and off, but it loses a lot in translation from other platforms."
NOW i know that this is a shooter and whatnot...but i just dont want to read something similar when Deception comes out...I hate to think the PS2 is inferior.

Is that before getting the HDD or after? With the HDD your PS2 has a little more power going for it. That's why its required for the FFXI. Since I got it I have even notice that uploading times for my existing games have shorten a great deal.

BEFORE...which brings up an interesting question, will consumers be expected to buy hdd or harddrive for deception? that hardrive thing was intended for FFXI because that game is so large, right?

i dont see most ppl buying a hard drive for the ps2 at $99, most of them will either be ff fans, or those just looking to have roms and such.
xbox has way better graphics, sound, and so forth, so of coarse if the xbox was used to its full potentail it will be better, but i doubt most ppl would tell the difference.
i hope they dont take crap out of the xbox version, some developers said they remove stuff from the xbox version to keep it from making the other 2 versions look inferior, which sucks.
they wront add stuff like fighters, or backgrounds, it be stupid, like soul caliber 2, each version had its own fighter, so i just bought none of them.

The HDD id intended for any game that wants to use it.

From what I understand, that's one of the reasons FFXI took so long to make. At first they planned for it to work without the HDD, but once they found out how powerful it was they decided to take more time to create a better (aka more power hungry) game.
To me it doesn't really matter...I already got the HDD, I've had FFXI reserved for the PS2 for over a year. I will admit that I kinda hope that MKD will use the HDD, it means that we could get downloads and expansion packs in regards to more items/costumes for created characters and possible additional playable classic/MKDA characters down the road for the ones that don't make it when the game first comes out.

What IS the HDD ?
is it just a small harddrive?
When it came bundled with FFXI i always thought it to be full of FFXI content that WOULDNT FIT onto the disc itself...but from what you people are saying, it appears to be space you can use for downloads ( like a BIG memory card? )

It's a 40GB Harddrive for your PS2, kinda like the one you have in your PC. You can save info, download, etc. Of course I'm still trying to make heads and tails out of the damn manual. But I already had to download some updates for the FFXI game.

There are lots of reasons FFXI requires the HDD. The main being the game is always updated through patches that you have to download. These patches fix bugs and add more content. This is one reason MMORPG's (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) have become so popular. Through regular patches the developers can always add new things to do so a game has the possibility of always having something new to see/do.
As of right now, yes, FFXI is the only game that uses/requires the HDD drive. But that will all change pretty soon. I've already heard rumors of games like Gran Turismo 4 using the HDD drive to add new cars and tracks.
Deception could take advantage of it by adding new characters, moves, arenas etc. I really hope Midway decides to take advantage of the HDD.
As for pushing the limits of the PS2... I highly doubt it. I remember when games like FF8 came out that really showed off the PSX's graphics power, the developers always said they were pushing PSX's engine to the max. But low and behold more games were released later on that suprpassed FF8 in graphic power, sound, and playability.
One of the main problems for PS2 is that the system is damn hard to code in refrence to coding a game. Sony has really helped out though by sending companies frequent kits to help make the process easier. And with the HDD drive, it's only going to get better. I know I'm stuck on FF games now but.... when FFX was first released I about creamed my pants at the beautiful graphics. If you think those were great, just wait till you see FFXI if you haven't already. It's gorgeous.
If I had to guess I would say a game like GTA vice city uses about 70% of PS2's maximum capabilities. So there is quite a bit of untapped potential left in PS2 for sure.

Wow, i would've thought it used close to 90 or 100. But yeah, Rockstar has said how the next installment will surpass Vice City.
So when programmers claim they are pushing system to the limit they really mean at the time. As programming advances so does tapping into the fuller force of the system.
And yes i HOPE Midway uses the HDD...that would be such a kool option. It would make the game advance in so many ways.

According to my inside sources, MK:Deception is being developed for the PS2. The finished code for the PS2 version will then be ported to the X-Box. The reason for this is two-fold: first, the PS2 version almost always sells more than X-Box versions. Thus, Midway wants the bigger seller to be the optimized version. Second, MK:Deception is based off of the MK:DA engine, and has already been tweaked in favor of the PS2. What this means is that the PS2 will be pushed harder than the X-Box, but the X-Box version will not be too much better than PS2. Expect slightly higher-resolution, smoother textures, and a faster framerate on X-Box, but not much else.

this is the best news i've heard all week. If in fact your source holds true, than we can expect one sweet ass game for the ps2 ( not that we didnt know that already ).
I have a feeling Deception is going to be dubbed " The greatest fighting game EVER "

Hell yeah it will, and that's a big task to overcome. But from what I have seen so far it looks possible. I don't wanna jinx it or anything though.....

I have one question... you can PM the answer if you'd like... how exactly do you connect to the net with the ps2, I believe you need the network adapter and such but, as far as the provider goes, can you just use the same as your computer or what? Explain that whole internet process in great detail for me, please and thank you.

The ps2 graphic has being pushed to its limit, or maybe developers just getting lazy. PS2 games from two or three years ago, don't look much different from the current coming ps2 games. The transition is so minor you hardly notice the difference. No graphic on ps2 games ever wow me. It's getting really old. Last time I play far cry, wow, that was some kick ass graphic.
Oh if I'm wrong correct me, but was it MK2 and MK3 superior on the SNES in terms of graphic, sound and control, than thier Genesis counterpart. I played them both on Genesis and SNES and I thought SNES was the much better one.

I agree first there was Street Fighter,Killer Instinct than Mortal Kombat came around now people are saying Street Fighter what KI who lol.. But when u think about it people are comparing MKD to MK2 reasoning its re-re-launching the franchise and thats why its gonna kick some serious ass

I still believe the PS2 has more to give, but thats just in comparison to XBox. XBox came out as a heavily documented system running a processor and OS core that programmers knew, so from the get go it was use a good chunk of its overall abilities. The PS2, like the PSX, has been increasing the quality of its graphics, I believe, since its release, because its a system that the programmers had to adapt to and be creative with. The biggest jump in quality that I noticed was with the engine that Jak and Daxter used. Naughty Dog took the time to increase the quality of graphics, and other companies could do that as well if they tried.
I keep thinking back to how much of an increase in quality there was from the original PS1 games to the last ones created. Like the jump from Tekken to Tekken 3 for example. Jumps like that aren't going to be happening with the newer systems just because with the level of power they are dealing with, it takes a greater and greater jump in performance to notice a difference. But still, I think the PS2 has it in it to increase. The question is, will developers bother putting oodles of time into finding the better ways to do things or will they just wait for the next gen of systems.
As for past MK games, I really don't know how anybody could claim Genesis MK2 and MK3 was better then SNES MK2 and MK3 in any way at all. The Snes version did have better, higher quality and higher color graphics (because of the higher total # of colors and higher max # of colors on screen) and had better sound as well, while still having what always felt like more arcade realistic play. But, thats just my opinion :P
