I'm about as sexually conservative as one can get, and I have yet to be really offended by any of the renders. That might have something to do with the fact that I'm not a DC fan (could care less how far Catwoman's suit is zipped down), but for the the mk characters, princess or prostitute, I see little reason to complain about the revealing clothing. As long as they're consistent, I don't really mind.

I've never played MK for realism, and I think the reason why I love the franchise so much is because it truly is fantasy-driven. But never mind that. If we're assuming a realistic backdrop, then I'll play on the realist's turf.

It's not unreasonable to put the Edenians in scantly clothing, especially considering almost all the Edenians women don't cover up their their thighs, shoulders, and busts. Is it so impossible to believe that there could be a society that doesn't taboo certain levels of nudity, but actually prizes sensual appearance? Look at the ancient Greeks: they virtually worshiped the flesh. They thought nothing could be more beautiful than the naked male (I do not share this opinion).

The realm of order in MKD had the reverse conservative appearance. The outworld is a little harder to comment on, but even Kahn is not sporting a whole lot of garments.

Now the earthrealm characters can't use the same defense for obvious reasons, so I'll concede the realist criticism for the case of Sonya. But I stand by my words before: when did anyone come to expect this level of realism from MK? From day 1, they've been given us very bombastic over-the-top aesthetic. Why are you complaining about it now?

They said this game was going to be "dark and gritty." I don't know if that is still the agenda, but a game does necessarily have to be realistic to be dark.

What I can't get my head around is how people are more offended by Kitana showing skin (and less skin than she has shown in some games) than the fact that what she's wearing is just plain ugly.

I find Kitana's render to be quite beautiful. I think she's very sexy and tasteful at the same time. People are entitled to their opinion of what does and doesn't go too far.

I would not consider myself "conservative" but I do think some of the costumes in the past have gone too far. Mileena's MKA alternative comes to mind. It doesn't make me a prude because I find nothing sexy about that look.

As far as the MK v DCU renders go, aside from Kitana, Sonya and Catwoman really don't do much for me. I am just of the type that thinks that a woman can be very sexy without enormous breasts that are falling out. That being said, I don't find them inappropriate. I just don't care for them.

i think it's all the black in the body suit part. i've been wondering about this.

i think this is the first MK look wear the more i look at it the more i don't like it.

lmao @ Keith. Yeah I'm wondering the same thing. Her design is more important to me than the amount of skin she's showing. I could care less if her cleavage was showing or not, if the costume is unique and brilliant in design, I'm not going to complain about it. Unfortunately this one isn't all that. Hence why I love Mileena's Deception primary and her alternate.

I can relate. I don't think the outfit is ugly, just in need of some, I don't know, refinement.

Like I've been doing often, I did a slight redesign of the character and heavily modified her hair, face, and other things.

So here's Kitana's render with 30% less bulge and 70% less rainbow!
Hi-res here: Kitana redo Edit: Apparently Photobucket auto-condenses the size of its pictures, so it's not quite hi-res, but at least it's bigger.

Casual and non-fans of Mortal Kombat ARE going to look at this render and think that Kitana is some sentimental little goody-2-shoes that shouldn't even be fighting, but rather being kidnapped.

Wow. All that just from a little rainbow in the background. If there are fans that dumb out there...which I'm sure there are.....fuck 'em.

We both know that an unfortunate large portion of fighting game fans out there have an attention span of a couple seconds and a mentality that expects everything to be put out in the open, plain and simple, by the creators, in an effort to minimize how much thinking is involved with playing the game. Some lucky people out there are gonna really see Kitana for the first time and, if interest rises, they'll look into her storyline and search for the deeper and more subtle qualities of the princess. The most part will look at the render and think she's a wuss, then move onto a "cooler-looking fighter". There's nothing anyone can do about it.

LeoBrZ81 Wrote:
I continue to think that her look is extremely bland and doesn't show much effort from an overall perspective when it comes to the design (not the render or the character itself). There's just nothing remotely "new" about her new look, which is not the case for the characters who were announced first.

Sonya, who, as some of you say, is just a "t-shirt and tight pants" type of girl, can obviously look completely new with some creative choices like the beret, the new hairstyle, updated "sci-fi" look, and simple, simple stuff like bands around her body.

'nuff said.

Buddy, I'm sorry, but it's clear I'm not the only one who thinks this. I'd be more inclined to analyze any possible exagerations from my end if I was the only one saying the above, but no amount of denying hides the fact that, while a few like you have found enough in the new Kitana to be happy with her, the bigger half sees that she hasn't lived up to the precedent made by the first announced characters. But yeah, if I was in your position as a big Kitana fan, I wouldn't like to hear this kind of thing over and over again either.

As for your big post on Kitana's story arches, it was a nice read. I continue to think that you bestow upon Kitana a load of profound qualities (and unearth another load from hard-to-see sources) that the MK Team doesn't whatsoever. I'm not saying you're making stuff up, but rather, you're taking it upon yourself to "brighten up" the light Kitana is cast under. If you were put in charge of the girl, I'm sure her storylines would be much, much better. I'm glad in recognizing that you just seem to have an affinity for Kitana dozens of times deeper than the MK Team's. Sucks you can't be the one to write her storylines and direct the creation of her images. Maybe then her render would be amazing right now and everyone around the world would be cheering for her return in the future canon games.

Garlador, I love the loose hair. Damn, I wish she had that in the new game. Hopefully they give it to Mileena if she's in, along with female features that, for the first time, don't need to be added or edited by fans.

LoL @ Keith. Couldn't agree more.

That's a great improvement. The rainbow didn't bother me at all. The hair was shit, yours is much better. But I still dislike the design of the outfit. Great job though.

Oh wow! her hair being down actually makes the entire render look better. Even the outfit dare I say looks better with her hair down. Too mad those small details and or changes like that weren't applied to the render by the MK team themselves.

Since we're on the sexuality thing lol, I'm with the people that think it's "hype over nothing" I mean, SC is worse(with the skimpy girls) easily then anyone in MK8 or MK period but even so kind of like I said in that general thread about " vid game girls degrading woman" etc. I don't think it degrades them to the point or hype that some people might "go to" I mean I can see if they were literally topless or no panties something like that but the key thing people have to remember and keep in mind is that it's a "video game" people. Video game characters=not real, it's nothing but pixels that look realistic but even so STILL is not real.

I mean I never hear anyone complaining about Shao Kahn's suit yet he shows alot of skin(for a guy in MK) in fact some girls I know have told me they think it's sexy lol

I think Kitana looks sexy but in a "non-slutty" way.glasses

MKF,

The fact that you qualified your last statement with "in a non-slutty way" pretty much cut against what you had written in the previous paragraph and reinforces the concerns other people have had. wink

Omg! That looks SO much better. I love it! She looks like more of a threat in that pic with that "Bring it, bitch" look in her eyes. I wish her hair was down again. To see her fighting with her hair flowing in the wind, it would make me so happy and I'd look so great on the PS3 and Xbox360.
