Source: Capcom shareholders scrap plan that prevents hostile takeovers
Newsbrief: Today, Capcom announced that at its most recent investor meeting, its shareholders voted to end the company's hostile takeover defense -- which means that Capcom could now be acquired if a company buys up large amounts of its stock.
Many companies have defenses against a stock purchase takeover, and there are various schemes and strategies they can adopt to block a party from gaining control of the company by buying up its stock.
Capcom originally put such countermeasures in place in 2008 following a shareholder vote. This latest development won't stop the company's management from attempting to "react to make necessary measures within the admissible limits of applicable laws and regulations," the company said in its statement.

I don't think the franchises in Capcom will be separated.
I think the company is going to have to be bought whole. I do hope that does happen, because I don't want to see Street Fighter, Resident Evil, or other Capcom franchises under a different name.
I think that the IPs would be separated, I could easily see Resident Evil going to Konami, while Keiji Inafune gets the rights to the Mega Man franchise (being it's actual creator would be a benefit.) I don't think the franchises in Capcom will be separated.

However, I could see Nintendo buying it whole, and having Inafune join the team for more Mega Man.

They might not be able to afford it, but I hope Ninja Theory would get the rights for Devil May Cry so they can continue the DmC franchise. I'm aware I am one of the few who'd like that though. :P
As for Street Fighter... imagine the next Street Fighter being made by others than Capcom. That's such an odd thought... But Double Helix did a great job with Killer Instinct, so hopefully the same will happen to SF.
HAH, just had a funny thought... What if WB buys the rights to Street Fighter, and then NRS will make a Mortal Kombat VS Street Fighter game? XD
Now it is certainly a possibility...

It's nice we can agree on something, Razor. ^^

Terrible news.
Capcom has greatly benefited from being third party. I don't want any one of their IPs under anyone else's name. I just hope if they are bought out, it's by another third party publisher like Sega. I absolutely don't want Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony getting their hands on Capcom.

I think if Nintendo was to buy Capcom, Capcom would still function as an independent company. I doubt the folks at Nintendo would relinquish Capcom's name.

It's not about the name, it's about the fact that any 1st party Street Fighter game would cripple the FGC. I seriously doubt Nintendo would allow Capcom to make Street Fighter available to other platforms if Nintendo owned the IP. They'd have a stranglehold on the Fighting Game scene, which I absolutely do NOT want.

Dividing the assets of a company being openly traded is a tad premature.

Amazing game for sure.

My thoughts as well. This isn't a situation like THQ's, where the company is flat out folding.
But consider, for a moment, if Microsoft or Sony decided to buy majority control. The Resident Evil I.P. as an exclusive alone would be huge for either side.

What about their games? Would they be Nintendo exclusives if this happened?

Maybe whoever gets it is a little looser with the rights to Street Fighter so that we can finally get MK vs SF, the ultimate dream match.

If they did manage to do that consider the DMC franchise dead to me.
The scary thing about these news to me is what it would mean if any of it's franchises were bought by some other company(ies), the Resident Evil series especially. Those games always had a certain touch to them that felt like they were Capcom's. Their atmosphere, their visuals, their music. I'm afraid all of that would be gone if the RE games were made by another company. Not necessarily bad, but definitely not the same.

So you still have a glimmer of hope to see the old Dante?
I personally prefer the new Dante. I like his design better, NT did better storytelling in 1 game than Capcom did in 4 games, the gameplay in DmC has alot of potential to become alot greater than the original games, imo.
Too bad you are disregarding it entirely, as I think you are missing out on a good game, especially if you like the genre, but that's your choice.
