I've always gone for the latter. I can, normally, learn to find someone attractive. It's impossible to learn how to put up with abusive behavior though.
Thats the problem I have with "settling". It's like people throw in the towel too damn easy. I have high expectations for any girl and because of it I've been single for a while and know I will be for quite some time. I just don't get why people settle for mediocrity, or just settle for someone who gives them attention. I agree 100% that no one is perfect, I'm not and my future girlfriend won't be either but there is a point where I would want to say that this is the girl I want to be with and absolutely wholeheartedly and mean it without the slightest doubt in my mind. My biggest thing is finding someone who benefits from being with me and vice versa emotionally, physically, mentally and not just because she's there or available. I'm not saying thats what you're implying or how you feel, but I'm just stating my take on "settling"
I think you guys too the word "settle" a little too literally. Some people do have too high of a standard, and therefore will either end up alone or with someone at the far end of one of those "categories" of people which leads to unhappiness. A good amount of people, I'm willing to say a pretty large majority of people as well, have certain hangups about what sort of people they will date. Typically it's based on appearance, but things like wealth and reputation are common too.
A better way to phrase what I really wanted to say was, "I don't like to limit myself physically or hold an ideal of 'she's gotta be hot'. If her personally is what I am looking for, then I will think of her as beautiful and be drawn to her appearance as well". So no I'm not really suggesting people just settle on someone they think is "good enough". I just know how some people are. There are good people out there, but too often people limit themselves and are blind to see them or look only in a place where you won't find them.
