I read it, and it doesnt make sense. Who ever taught you math needs to go back to school. Parenthesis or not....it doesnt matter. However, if it was -(6^2), then I would agree that it's -36.

Wow, I can't believe I'm arguing for math, but I am right. Just check a calculator, put a negative with a square in parenthesis, and see what it says. For the love of God, I'm taking math classes right now! I do this stuff every day, while you did it a few years back. You probably forgot or something.

On my calculator, -6^2 = 36.

I get 93.6 as the answer to Crows brainteaser.

No. What you said is true, but if 6^2 is in parenthesis, then it will come out negative. -6 x -6 is completely different.

Thanks for the math confirmation, everyone. The answer I wrote was a positive 468 over 5 (it's never a good thing to use decimals in higher math unless you are specifically told to). The "book" had the answer as negative and marked it wrong, but as you can see the top portion of the fraction bar is a negative 468 and since -1-4 is also negative, the answer must be a positive since dividing two negatives will result in a positive number. The only time a square root of a negative number wouldn't be negative is if the minus symbol was disconnected from the number, like if the parenthesis were around the 6 by itself and the negative was out in front. Or if there was an absolute value symbol around the -6 squared, but there isn't any of that.
I hate I missed what must have been the easiest question on the entire test; compared to what we were actually doing, I don't even see why this problem was on the test (has nothing to do with anything we learned recently). Anyway, he'll fix it, since I know I'm right about it being positive.
