I got Goldeneye a few months ago, and despite school was an issue, I have yet to unlock Temple and Aztec levels.
I really have forgotten the pattern. Normally I'd just get my brother to do the pattern though.

Nobody buys CoD for the story, who even says that? Even as someone who cannot see the appeal in the series, it's pretty obvious how much of an impact Modern Warfare has had on the modern video game industry. Whether or not it's a good game is irrelevant. The impact was massive.

Doom is more important than both games. That game truly defined an entire genre. Goldeneye just brought it to consoles.

Why does it matter if a game has online play? :l A game doesn't need to be single player only to be great.
I see World of Warcraft on a few lists here, which is surprising. I'm a WoW player and I'm not sure I'd even consider it. It's somewhat unique because it's so massive and well known, but at its core, I wouldn't consider it a better game than something like Super Metroid or Donkey Kong Country.
Also Super Mario Bros. 3 needs to be at the top or the list is a joke. Also Tetris.

I'm definitely not going to expect Doom to be somewhere on this list. I mean, that game did bring horror and gore to the games and it did defy stuff. I'm not going to deny. I'm just saying with Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, they helped out so much with the FPS with the consoles, but Doom itself helped greatly with FPS.
Although, my thing with the whole online thing. CoD, to me, it's nothing but online play. I mean, I get it, not every game should be singleplayer (Still greatly ticked that Operation: Raccoon City isn't) but I never really saw it defy anything greatly other than being a widely known online game. With games like Mario, that did something HUGE with the gaming industry. So did Sonic.
I never really saw anything so special with CoD. Even WoW. Despite their Corrupted Blood gained a lot of media attention and their help creating one of the best South Park episode ever (IMO) still, I just don't see CoD doing anything special. I really hope that this list is based off of what these games did for the gaming industry, not because they're fan favorites.
Certain games defied a whole lot of stuff. I mean, look at Mortal Kombat. The one game that really helped boast the ESRB to life due to all the gore and violence it brought upon its fans. That game did something, so surely it should definitely be listed on the list...
But honestly. that's just me talking.

Of course, the game got out of control with various expansions, I'm still waiting for certain moves you can let your Sims do that they haven't done yet. Although, with various improvements, you can't have The Sims not make it somewhere in the list... Even if it is in a lower part of the list.
Although the game that I do not want to see is Final Fantasy 7. Despite that I was such a good girlfriend that managed to get the game for her boyfriend, I despise the living crap out of it due to the amount of publicity the game shows. I don't think the villain in there (I'm not going to go through the trouble researching how you spell his name since I am completely wiped out from having four teeth removed from my mouth) so let's just say, Ooga Booga... Okay, Ooga Booga is supposedly the top villain of all time? IGN made a list of the greatest moments in video game history.
Despite that I found that list utter bullshit at times, I cannot believe that Aerith's death was the number one moment of all time for greatest moment in video game history. I get it, I'm not a FF fan, but this game gets way too much publicity and I for one, does not think this game should make the list. If anything, the entire series should be counted for, not just one game...
Because I think Halo would just be counted for if they're going to be in the list. You're not going to see the list state Halo 2 and 3... They'll just say that game in general... Unless they really meant that the first one is really great.

I was trying to think like an industry person when I made that list. In all honesty, as far as Final Fantasy goes, for me it's a toss up between FFVI and FF VII.
For as much crap as FFVII gets now for how much love it got back then, it was honestly a really fun game. I sunk over 90 hours in to it in my first go through and yes, Aeris getting killed shocked the hell out of me when I first played it. I had no clue, I thought that I had done something wrong, and I assumed that I'd somehow get to play as her again.
I mean, what RPG has ever set up a character, given them all of these different weapons and armor etc, even insinuated a possible romance, only to kill them off completely? Games simply don't do that very often, so yeah, it was a big moment to me. The biggest ever? I dunno, that's probably a stretch.
The Sims could VERY easily be the top 20 all time list. Given how many sequels and offshoots etc, it's one of the biggest PC turned console franchises and its beloved by both hardcore and casual gamers alike. Not many game series can make that claim.
I'm personally not a huge fan of the Sims, but that's because I've never really had a good experience with the games. Every time I take the time to go through and create a character and I get started, two things inevitably happen:
1) I realize that this is too much like my real life, and waking up, showering, getting dressed, going to work, coming home, playing a game for a few hours and going to bed in a game made my real life seem way more depressing than it actually is lol.
2) Every time, without fail, I would have to do something involving other characters and it simply would not work. Objectives would always be just a little out of reach and no amount of groundhog daying it day after day would help.
So while I respect the Sims as a franchise and I agree, it's definitely up there and I could absolutely see it in the top 20 all time, that game made me want to tear my hair out a times!!

I REALLY wanted to put Uncharted 2 on that list. I thought about it alot, as I thoroughly enjoyed that game. It was either that or Bioshock, and I was trying to think like a snooty G4 industry wank in terms of what I'd put on the list.
Honestly? If it were my own personal list? Uncharted 2 would be in the top 10 and Bioshock, Portal and a few others wouldn't even make the list.

As far as Doom and Call of Duty go:
Doom: Come on, it was the first big FPS. Sure, Wolfenstein came first, but Doom was the first big game that really got everything right and it stood up for years as the standard. It's the grandfather of the biggest genre out there, it should absolutely be on the list.
Call of Duty: It certainly might make it on to the list, but it shouldn't. Sure, CoD has had an undeniable impact and it's sold a ton, but so has Madden. Would you honestly put any single year of Madden on a top 20 greatest game of all time list? I certainly wouldn't. Sure, it's solid every year and it's reliable, but I've never played a Madden game and felt that I was playing one of the greatest games of all time.
For me, it's the same with Call of Duty, which has basically become an annual game just like Madden. It wasn't a true next gen experience like Halo was on the Xbox, it wasn't the game that brought shooters to consoles like Goldeneye and it wasn't the originator like Doom. It was the genesis of a large portion of the Medal of Honor team leaving and forming a new team. It's basically a spiritual offshoot of that series.
You add all of that up and, combined with the great sales numbers, you get a game series in Call of Duty that's great for shooter fans, but even Modern Warfare can't be considered one of the 20 greatest games of all time. I wouldn't anyways. If you do, then more power to ya, I guess.

Since I shared the most of Icebaby's opinions here, I've got to object.
I haven't delved into the Call of Duty community hugely, but there are pro-story fans for Call of Duty, as this thread indicates. Modern Warfare is a video game phenomenon but not an innovative pioneer to the industry: it just put the best FPS ingredients together to create the most profitable product. There's not much originality really. For instance, Dickhunt for NES wasn't that magnificient in sales ('twas OK) yet it's a foundation to the games more than Modern Warfare would be. Still, it's a series that must be mentioned when telling about the gaming history, for the impact.
Not quite. Dario, the maker of Doom, basically just did Wolfenstein 3D to Mars with aliens, in his own words. GoldenEye > Perfect Dark > Doom
(In the sense of bringing new stuff and being defining. It's still important.)

World of Warcraft hasn't only had a huge impact in the gaming industry but it defined MMORPG a lot. Donkey Kong Country was fantastic however.
Also I wanted to say about Perfect Dark that while it never reached its full potential due to being a Nintendo 64 exclusive, it brought up many things to the first-person shooters including co-operative play, crouch walking, dual-wielding, secondary abilities to weapons: the list could go for long. It was in addition a great game and a lot better than its successor, Perfect Dark Zero (prequel for #360). Doom, Marathon: Durandal and the likes weren't as much of a joy in my opinion (I didn't play them a lot though).

I myself am not that into Final Fantasy, and I never played FFVII, but the game has been credited with having a legendary story, and Aerith's death is viewed as one of the most iconic moments in video game history.
I think the game should be on the list, in the Top 20, maybe.
That moment when I buy COD for the Story Modes more than the online...
COD stories aren't bad at all guys. Maybe not revolutionary, but far from terrible. I haven't played MW3 story mode yet, but other than that they've all seemed solid.
The online, on the other hand, is trying to force too much shit in one ass, which is why I hated MW2 online compared to COD4.

Really? I like Morgan. Adam Sessler's okay, but sometimes he comes off as being a bit too much of a snob. He certainly knows his stuff though.
As for G4, it's really sad what it's become. Both G4 and Tech TV had a ton of good shows. Perhaps they were a bit before their time?

Despite that it's probably going to be based off that, no offense, but that's utter bullshit.
Because then that's a whole lot of games that will be on the list that don't even deserve to have the title, "Greatest Game of All Time." There's some games that I have a hunch that might make it to the list that isn't even worthy enough to be on such a list...
No, games that made an impact should be declared as a great game. Games that are just here for entertainment, please... Sorry to be a hater, but Call of Duty... I cannot see any kind of accomplishment that game made other than online play. Despite that I just play Modern Warfare 3 every so often, it doesn't have any kind of special impact with me other than it's a shooter that I can enjoy playing side by side with my guy. That's it.
I don't play online with that game because people uses glitches and cheat like crazy... I hate online stuff at times. But still.... If this list really is based off of entertainment purposes, then what's the point?

I don't see CoD getting to be on the list, although I do enjoy the series a lot (mostly 3arc's titles).
I think a few fighting games will make it:
Tekken 3 (or Tekken Tag Tournament)
Street Fighter III
Virtua Fighter (not sure which game; don't play)
Mortal Kombat (hard to decide for this game, but maybe the first, last or UMK3)

Street Fighter III
Virtua Fighter (not sure which game; don't play)
Mortal Kombat (hard to decide for this game, but maybe the first, last or UMK3)
I don't see CoD getting to be on the list, although I do enjoy the series a lot (mostly 3arc's titles).

Maybe just the series in general for some of the games you mentioned. It's kind of hard to say that Mortal Kombat 3 is declared the greatest video game of all time when there's other games in the series that are ten times better than that. Not saying that you're saying that MK3 is better, just taking one game out of the series as an example.
I mean, I've seen Mortal Kombat make lists every now and then, but they don't particularly say one game in general, they show footage of all the games combine and just say "Mortal Kombat" in general. Same with Street Fighter and Tekken, despite that I've never played either of those games.
Hey, what about Fighting Street? The FIRST Street Fighter game? Shouldn't that have a saying?
Not really, but no one ever mentions anything about the first Street fighter game

If one of the Metal Gear Solid games doesn't make it, I'm destroying everyone. MGS1 was a badass game. Probably my favorite out of the 4 "Solid" series.

I'm not going to be very happy after this list comes out because something like this will happen (replace Mario and Skyrim with any games you want):
Me: Wow! I sure do love Super Mario Bros. 3! I think it's the best game ever!
Everyone around me: No it's not, Skyrim is!
Me: No, I think Mario's better. I have lots of fun playing it; I love progressing through all the different worlds, finding secrets, and finding all the awesome power-ups. Skyrim's not my kind of game.
Everyone around me: It doesn't matter, G4 said Skyrim is #1. Mario was only #16.
Me: So what? I think Mario's the best. Just because G4 thinks Skyrim is the best doesn't mean it's a fact.
Everyone around me: Yes it does! It's official! You're just butthurt because your opinion is wong!
Or maybe something like this:
Me: Super Mario Bros 3 was voted #1 on G4's top 100 games of all time list? That's cool, Mario's my favorite game series of all time.
Others: Mario's an overrated piece of crap. The only reason you say it's good is because G4 and everyone else says it. Maybe 20 years ago it was kind of okay, but there are games that blow Mario out of the water now. Quit being a conformist.
Me: I don't care how popular Mario is. I'd still like it even if nobody else liked it.
Others: You say that, but can you actually come up with any reasons why Mario is better than all the other games that have much more content, better graphics and better storylines? Didn't think so. Take off your nostalgia goggles, man.
Seems like a lose/lose situation. If your game doesn't get the top spot, then the people who's game does get the number one spot use it as "proof" that you should like their game. If it does make the top spot, people are there to call you a conformist. I guess it's the same way with pretty much everything.

Nothing blows SMB3 out of the water.
While my boyfriend and I were heading off to some miniature golfing yesterday, I brought this topic into a conversation. Asking him if he could only pick 5 games that he would seem to be good in a voting situation of the greatest video games of all time, this is what he chose, in no particular order:
Madden Football Because it helped expanded the sports games.
Pappa Pa Rappa(?) Pushed the music/rhythm games into what we have now (DDR, Guitar Hero, etc.)
Final Fantasy Preference and the base of strategy games
Mario Developed a strong approach to adventure/fighting/strategy games
Street Fighter 2 Because I'd like some poundcake (Hope you get the reference)
Those were his games and here's mine:
Metal Gear Solid It did things no other game hasn't really tried when it came out for PS
Sonic Helped created one of the world's largest system rivalry with Nintendo.
Mortal Kombat Despite that other games have done so before this, it helped bring controversial material into video games and helped developed the ESRB
Perfect Dark Helped created multiplayer into what it is today.
If anyone would like to contribute to this kind of list, feel free, but just jot down five games that you would think would be put into the list, and explain why it should be there. Yes, there are plenty of other games we could have mentioned, but this is what we got out of our heads during the trip.
