By no means get me wrong: I'm just the messenger. I'm somehow trying to understand G4's reasoning. In a sense it does have something that other games don't at least. I don't think that being an app game qualifies necessarily as a reason because Angry Birds is nowadays on other platforms too and in future the meaning of an app game will change vastly i.e. for instance an XBLA game can be as much a retail game today. I'm not saying that the rank of Angry Birds will be fine – by looking at the titles that have and haven't been revealed so far it's easy to say that it's crazy.
Tetris has been ranked as #1 previously in a similar chart. Let's see where it gets with G4. I wonder if this Mortal Kombat is MK1 or MK9.

I'm pretty pissed at where Mortal Kombat is myself.

I'm even more pissed that they think NBA Jam and Prince of Persia, or any of those games for that matter, are better games than Mortal Kombat.

I'm not trying to be MK-psycho, but the game deserved to be AT LEAST in the top 30. It revolutionized
the fighting genre, and helped pave the way for all M-rated games.

In all honesty, had Mortal Kombat not have been accepted in its entirety by the gaming industry and
society in general, would any M-rated game exist?

Angry Birds are going to get their own game on a console, I heard that during the E3. However, these other apps... No, I don't get it, I don't get how Words with Friends is a better game than Pong.

And they were only showcasing the original Mortal Kombat. They did not show the other games at all.



They continuously repeated that Mortal Kombat was "the most controversial game." Well if that's the case, how can a game with that kind of title be in the 70s? I'm still stunned to see games such as Mega Man and Star Fox be that so far in the list, since those were great games back during out childhood. And I saw a lot of them showing Sonic during the "Next Time..." part... As well as Contra... Really? They're going to be within the 60-50's? Really? REALLY?

I simply do not understand the sense this list has.

Lets all just agree that the idiots at G4 made the shittiest list of the best games of all time.

Well I like this section of list a bit more but it still sucks that they are so low. And angry birds is "better" than these? -.-' Fuck. Some of these are my favorite games. Like AC2, why are you so low? Man, makes me really wonder what's on top. If legend of Zelda gets anything out of the top 20, my mind will melt in aww of the people who made this list. So let me get this straight, Gears of War 3 is one of the best games of all time, what, because a character died? That's basically what they said. Are you serious?

I wouldn't even put the first Gears of War on this list. Why? Becuase it's just nameless, faceless FPS #1783. Introducing the roadie run and cover doesn't put you among the all time elte, so why is Gears 3 here? Oh, Hoard Mode, sorry, I forgot lol.

Also, Wing Commander 2 ahead of Mortal Kombat? Really? When they were talking about MK, they mentioned the graphics, the violence, the ESRB, tons of people lined up at arcades to play it and so many people seemed to talk fondly about it.

Then Wing Commander 2 comes up and one guy's like "I looked at my cats differently after that game" and another guy said "yeah, it's a great game" and then they went on to the next game! Shouldn't that tell these people anything?

Again, I said it before, but there's very little sense of history here. Why is the third God of War game #61 on this list? Sure, it was a good game, but wasn't it basically just a prettier version of the first two games?

By this time, by #61, shouldn't we be talking about real classics that really changed things or redefined a genre or sold a bazillion copies or SOMETHING that warrants consideration as being almost one of the top 60 games of ALL TIME?

Also, and maybe it's just me, but doesn't it seem like Genesis, Super NES, Saturn, Playstation and Dreamcast are horribly under-represented so far? I think that I counted four or five games between all of those systems out of 40, and none of them were on Saturn or Dreamcast.

It's all basically Atari, NES, the last generation and the current generation, which is more or less what I thought it would be. Oh well, here's hoping that changes.

I actually don't care about how high MK is on the list. The fact that MK is on the list of 100 Greatest Video Games of all time is more than enough for me.

The only thing I don't like about the list is apps being contenders for spots on the list. Words with Friends really? It's fucking Scrabble. What's next? Draw Something will be in the top 20? Don't even get me started on Angry Birds...

But other than the apps being on the list, it's turning out quite well. Just to be on this list would be a great honor.

I would be pleased with this list if they weren't including app games as well as games just for a stupid reason, AKA Gears of War 3.

What about Shadow of Colossus? What happens to you when you beat the game? You get your princess resurrected, but you certainly can't be there when she awakes... Oh no, no... You get turned into an infant.

That story was more depressing than some main character being killed.

These guys that are talking about these games are trying to be a knock off of MTV's I Love The 70s'00's. They're trying to be that and they're trying way too hard to where it's an instant fail. I mean, Souja Boy, really? If you're going to have a list that talks about the game's history, actually include the history! I think Mortal Kombat was the only game so far that actually had that be talked about, while all these other games were like, "Oh yeah, I remember one time, when I was like a kid, I played this game and it was awesome."

It may seem like I'm really angry about this but I'm not. I'm just like... stunned to see how horribly it sucks.

I just wanna enter this thread and throw my Gears fanboy opinion and say that it's waaaaaay more than what you guys think.

It's not an FPS (3rd person shooter)
It has a great story
It has great characters
It's honestly not a mindless shooter

From where it stands right now, number 80 in the least is actually pretty fair. Hell maybe it can climb a little bit higher in my imaginary list to be in the 70s.

Killswitch, I think that we just had different experiences playing Gears. Maybe I set the bar too high. When the first Gears was announced, my jaw droped at the graphics and when I saw the roadie run, the duck and cover gameplay, I didn't think, I KNEW I'd enjoy it.

Then, I played through all of the first game, half of the second and only some of the third. But honestly, it took real effort on my part to stick with them. After a few hours with each title, I started to realize that all the chainsawing and hammer of dawning couldn't change the fact that I just wasn't having all that much fun.

Sure, part of it was playing as a main character that had a soul patch and sounded like he was passing a kidney stone every time he talked, matched up with a similar group of bros, one of whom misses his wife or whatever, but for me at least, after the first few runs and guns, it just all kinda blended together. A few cool moments here and there, but nothing that made me think "wow, this game is amazing."

The story in the 3rd game might be fantastic. I don't know, because as far as I got, I wasn't all that impressed. All in all, the series is solid. I wouldn't put it on the level of Halo, Golden Eye, Doom or the true innovators of the shooter genre (FPS or 3rd person shooter, they're pretty close together in this instance, but that's just my opinion) and as such, I woulnd't put any of them on a best of all time list, but that's just me.

So it seems so far that this list will be not be a good one. I'll just disregard it.

I am only curious because every game you say should bot be on the list happens to be one of my favorite games. Lol Like Gears 3. It is a pretty decent game. Yes it is still another shooter, but at least they tried new things and it quite different from other shooters. Its not the same backwash COD game with another title sticker put on to it. As Mr. Switch pointed out, the story and characters have reallly taken some development through the series.

I'm glad to see red dead redemption in the top 50. That game has a fantastic story and pretty decent multiplayer. Very good.
