I need a medical opinion and this is the only board I know won't take forever to get a reply. My gf has been under a lot of stress because she might have to leave school. Early Monday morning (around 1am) she was crying and having trouble breathing. She kinda collapsed and was still breathing, but something didn't feel right. A minute later she sat up struggling to breathe and freaked out because her whole right side was numb -- head, neck, shoulder and arm. I thought she was having a stroke! She could still move them though.

I took her to the ER. She was able to walk on her own but we took a cab. The doctors there didn't know what it was, but they didn't think it was a stroke. Her sister took her to the doctor later that day, who said it was a panic attack, and gave her some pills.

It's been a couple days and she's still kinda loopy. Her head is pounding and feels numb on one side she says. She's probably sick too because there's a cold going around (which I had) and her ears were hurting every time she burped or coughed, causing her head to hurt.

The thing that worries me is that she's kinda slow now. She gets weak and confused and I'm worried the swelling won't go away.

I just need some reassurance to know she'll be okay OR should I be more concerned?

Thanks

I would personally be more concerned. If this has been going on for a few days, then I think it would be better by now. Considering the fact that she is still ill, I would take more medical precautions. Take her to the doctor some more, talk to friends and family a little more. You can never be too cautious or too worried.

The obvious answer is no, she's clearly not okay if she's feeling numb and you can tell that her cognitive skills have decreased since her panic episode. Considering nobody here is a medical doctor, we have no idea what she could have, or what would b the best treatment for her, so I suggest taking her to see one (not the ER, to perhaps a family doctor or something) and explain what she's been going through and ask what she might need. It could also be a psychological thing.

Regardless, if you are not sure, Go to a doctor right away. There is no comparison for how upset you will be if you dont and its bad. Worst case.

Love is grand, GO TO THE DOCTOR

I would Take her to a doctor in the U.S., that sounds like it could be serious.

Your ears only pop and stuff like that when you have head congestion, and that would explain the headaches too. So stuff like that is likely just the cold you mentioned.

Sounds like she's under a lot of stress as well, which can do some bad stuff to your body (like cause panic attacks) and make you feel terrible all the time. I would know. I hope the pills they gave her were anti anxiety.

I have times were I'm overloaded with stress from school and it makes me have cluster headaches, I can't sleep and I hallucinate. Also just have unexplained aches and pains all over. Its sucks, its like you're losing your mind temperarily, that's probably why she seems loopy.

Keep a close eye on her and if she continues to get worse you should definatly take her in to see a doctor. It sounds like she going through a lot right now though, the best you can do is talk to her and help her through it. I think she'll get better after her mind deals with these issues, it happens to everyone at some point in life. Good luck to you and her

Take her to a doctor.
Preferably a Neurologist.

I hate to be a downer, but that sounds a *lot* like the early symptoms of MS sad

For all it's worth...when ever I get a panic attack, I don't recall ever feeling numb.

yup. Sounds like a panic attack... but she should really get checked. She should see both a physician and a psychiatrist (not a psychologist)

Take her to a neurologist. Take this advice from someone who's experienced somewhat similar to what she's going through.

If she smacked her head, it'll do a heck of a lot of messed up things to you.

As the husband of a wonderful woman who also happens to have MS, this is the first place my head went. When she was first diagnosed, she had some of these same symptoms and she had to get 4 opinions before someone finally figured out it was MS.

Not trying to scare you, just saying that you can never be too careful, especially with the health of a loved one.

The first thing I thought of was a stroke, but it could also be TIAs, which are "mini-strokes." Although they are not as serious as bigger strokes, they should be checked out, as they can lead to a full-blown stroke. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, strokes can happen to people of any age ( a friend of mine had four of them at age 12), so I would take other people's advice and get your girl to a neurologist. She'd probably need a CAT scan or an MRI. Best of luck to you both!

I'd say get a second opinion, and see a psychologist, it sounds sort of like a panic attack.
