I think this thread and threads like it across the internet speak to the strange tastes of gamers and nineties nostalgists. I wouldn't be surprised to see a handful of otherwise unlikely picks based on the previous games. It'd be great to see a more contemporary field, but they probably know their market.

Granted, some characters like Morrigan had the same sprite set since ever and moved like a flinstones cartoons... but still there where plenty of cool sprites! Plus its the end of an era!!! Its nostalgic!

As for sprites, using them would require a TON of work with each animation frame, and if they want to up the roster, I only see the polygon characters feasibly working.

That, and many of those sprites are beyond done-to-death...
