Some more info:
•Innovative graphics and gameplay bring the Marvel and Capcom Universes to life: Powered by an advanced version of MT Framework, the engine used in Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2, now comes to Marvel vs. Capcom 3, bringing beautiful backgrounds and character animations to the forefront.
•Evolved VS. Fighting System: Wild over-the-top gameplay complete with signature aerial combos, hyper combos and other original systems. The evolved battle system takes the exciting mind-reading game to a whole new level!
•3-on-3 Tag Team Fighting: Players build their own perfect team and use Assist Attacks and each character’s special moves to create their own unique fighting style.
•Living Comic Book Art Style: See the most adored characters from the Capcom and Marvel universes brought to life in a “moving comic” style, blurring the boundaries between 2D and 3D graphics.
While the second and third items are pretty much expected, the other two should pique your interest. The "boundaries between 2D and 3D graphics" might look something like the 2.5D used in Super Street Fighter IV, although the game shares an engine with two non-fighting titles.
The game's official title is Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds and is targeting a Spring 2011 release for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Yeah...it would be nice for them to require a part of your stock super gauge, so you don't simply abuse them to death like you could in MVC2. And if you use them, don't let the gauge refill until you've stopped doing a combo.

I would just eliminate assists entirely. Balancing a roster with 30+ characters will be hard enough of a challenge. I don't care who's in it, I'm not buying a broken game.
I hope they were serious when they said MvC3 is partially inspired by SF4. The "Children of the Atom" engine is a tad bit outdated. I guess hypothetically they could make a balanced fighting game incorporating assists.
But they won't.

In Jump Ultimate Stars assists were a big part of gameplay, they managed to be pretty balanced
Smash Bros Brawl had pretty balanced assists too

Neither one of those were Capcom titles, though.

MSH vs. SF was pretty balanced, and it was the first to feature their assist element. MVC2 just wrecked balance by trying to cram too much in the game, not unlike MK Armageddon.
I bet the MK team is embarrased that this game is getting way more excitement and praise than the annoucement of MKvsDC. Maybe they can learn a lesson. People love MvsC because of the huge roster, the special moves, and the fast and fun gameplay. Take notes on this MK team.

My memory is pitiful, but I don't really remember assists in Brawl.

This is true, though MvsSF's assists (if I remember right) were much more limited in regards to use/effectiveness. Though I loved that game, I never played it enough to be competitive.
I can appreciate how assists make certain pairings unique and useful, but I still prefer playing off of each character's merit alone (Tatsunoko cornered me out of that). More of a preference than a criticism, but if Capcom makes a cross-over fighter that can balance itself on the edge of a needle, I'll take assists as they come. I still think that only reasonable way to do that with a 30+ roster is by distancing from the Children of the Atom fighting style.
Oh, and I think people were mentioning Nemesis. Found this quote via eventhubs:

Hope that answers a few people's questions. Original article here.

Because Super-Skrull's an awesome, but far less relevant choice?
If Super-Skrull is this game's Shuma-Gorath it'll be better for it, at least. If it turns out it is him, it'll be very interesting to see if/how they limit his special moves. Dude could be the most over-powered character evarrrrr!
If only Poison Ivy was Marvel. She'd be perfect for this game!!!! :-))))))

Relevance doesn't seem to be an issue for Capcom, I mean, MvC helped introduce us to some of Marvel's lesser known greats (Blackheart, Spiral, Silver Samurai, the list goes on)
While Super Skrull is better known than any of them were, it doesn't matter, because those who whine about wanting the fantastic four will have it. Jsut say it's Johnny Storm in Overdrive from teh second (terrible) movie

Ehhh, those three characters made a lot more sense at the time. Especially Spiral and Silver Samurai, who snuck into the bigger picture via their very natural fit in Children of the Atom, but your (and others') point stands. They clearly have a mix of interests.
I wonder what they have against the Fantastic Four...
Obviously you could get a lot of mileage out of their individual powers, and it'd be a lot of fun to be able to pair up Thing/Hulk. It makes more sense to spread the special moves out amongst the quartet, rather than one character who does it all. It's a weird compromise (assuming the silhouette is Super-Skrull -- which seems reasonable)!
I guess, as broad design strokes, maybe they're not interested in Thing because he kinda doubles-up on Hulk. Invisible Woman maybe isn't obviously graphic enough. Maybe they think without those two, there isn't much point doing Mr. Fantastic and Human Torch?
From the practicality of designing a cast of several unique characters, it's just so strange. Really cool, but strange!

Something tells me thnis is what they were thinking. Invisible Woman can't measure up in a combat based game, since forcefields and invisible kicks can only go so far, and Thing would be too similar to Hulk. At that point, fans cry foul, because as you the fantastic four are "all for one, one for all" crap. So naturally, their fans would get quite peeved if only certain members of the team got in. So naturally, Super Skrull comes into play as a happy medium for all four, and people would come to understand why they have him and not 4 individual characters

I'm sure we'll get a chunk of reveals from E3. Only 2 months.
I hope they also announce new features and/or modes. Got my fingers crossed for alt costumes.
