Asthma causes breathing problems. You can run out of breath very quickly and struggle to breath when working hard. Its actually not as bad as it sounds.

Asthma never goes away. It may dwindle after many years, but it will always be there. I don't take asthma medication either. If you don't take the medicine, you eventually make the asthma condition weaker if you just tough it out.

Wow, asthma sucks...
But are all asthma medicines muscle degenerative?
That really sucks, since you need muscles to perform MAs. (Duhhh.wink)

It REALLY depends on the medication. My asthma is so bad I'm taking some of the strongest medication on the market (Seretide). However, my GP says that exercise is the best thing in the world I can do to help my condition, and prolong my lifespan (my lungs are roughly 30-40% scarred because of asthma).

In terms of what it does to your breathing, you can inhale, but you cannot exhale, your bronchioles and bronchi contract to such a stage where you can't get any air out. The air is in the alveoli, but the passages they use to exhale don't open.

But, the more exercise I do, the less my muscles degenerate, and the better my body is generally. I'll be going for a check-up when I get back home in a few weeks and we'll see what the doc says wink

Thanks Cyborg_wolf and Wanderer. smile

I've heard of Gordon Liu before. He played as Pai Mei in Kill Bill: Volume 2, but in real life, he's supposedly a much younger guy. I also know that he's a martial artist and that's about it...I wish I had more information on him.

I do the same thing Lambert. The only time I had to use it was when our instructor sent us around a field for 2 laps.

Everything else is fine, but don't get me to run!

True, swimming is an exellent exercise. Helps with stamina, and that's important.

Now here is one to think about:
Karate originated on the Okinawan island, probably
because travelers that had visited China took the martial arts training they had there, back to their homeland, Japan. ( does anyone here have another theory?) If that is so, that would mean Karate originated from Chinese Wu Shu.
However, the 2 arts are very different today, Karate being more rigid and poweroriented, while most Wu Shu is agile, and much more "flashy".

Why do these 2 arts look so different, not to mention have different traditions, if they both originated from the same martial art?

See you guys later!

I do think that Shaolin Monks went to Japan and stay there.

Karate is primary native Japanese martial arts mix with kung fu.

90%Japanese native martial arts 10% Others. A high skilled karate fighters are very fluid in their fighting. Karate phiosophy is one strike One kill. that is why karate develops the power moreso than the speed. Speed will come naturally when you know the techique.

kempo is a cross between Karate and Kung fu. Chunfa is the chinese cousin of Kempo.

^Bingo

As my Shotokan instructor put it one day:
"Take three hits, get cuts bruises, no problem, deliver one hit, knock him out. You win"

Whereas, with Muay Thai for purposes of BJJ, we do the Muay Thai not to deliver a knockout blow, but just to disorient them and then use the BJJ for the submission.

Good point on the speed, Deathscepter, but how come that Karate would focus more on power then Wu Shu?

And Bajar, that sounds interesting indeed, but what do you do if the Muay Thay does'nt disorient the opponent? What's your backup, so to speek?

See you later, folks.

well One hit one kill phisosphy in karate mean that you strive to improve your techique well enough to destroy your enemy with one blow and all street fights last about 10 sec. So a karate fighter doesnt waste their time other than developing their power in their techique then the rest of the stuff will come more naturally like speed and flow when their power is very good. If you see a karate master train you will see that he has great power good flow and good speed with him.

Power of a techique with the proper training is quite dangerous with the hands of the master.

gringringrin now THAT is interesting gringringrin

On a more serious notice, i would like to advice to you all, to buy or rent the DVD/VHS movie "Bruce Lee- Warriors journey." In 1 hour 40 minutes, it takes you through Bruce Lee's vision of Martial Arts, his struggle, his journey, and also shows for the first time, the footage of what was to be Bruce's greatest movie, The Game of Death. 41 minutes of it, to be precise.
Footage of the interwiew with him, also partially shown in " The Art of action" is also shown, along with more footage from the TV show "Longstreet", and bits of interwiews, with, amongst others, Kareem-Abdul Jabbar.
Bruce is also shown training, and some footage of him in his younger days, street fighting in Hong Kong, is also available. There is more to be seen than what i have accounted for, and if you wanna know what, go watch itgrin

It is a very interesting and inspiring documentary, and i strongly advice you to watch it.

See you.
