Superman is not Batman. I hope they realize that. I also hope that they understand that Superman is not just some invulnerable guy who can punch really, really hard. He's one of the most introspective characters in all of comic books, constantly questioning himself. That's why I don't get all the hate for Superman Returns. It flat out nailed who Superman is and why, despite his Kryptonian origins, he is still very human.

And neither Natalie Portman nor Anne Hathaway would be good for Lois Lane. If I had to pick an actress for Lois off the top of my head, I'd say Emma Stone.

Well, this is all happening because while writing TDK, Goyer mentioned an idea he had for a a Superman reboot to Nolan, and Nolan pitched it to WB for him. Nolan and his brother Jonathan(who is co-writing the script with Goyer) are both Superman fans, in addition to Batman. Remember, Nolan is strictly against Batman appearing on film with Superman or in a JLA film because he understands the character and sees that having Batman appear with super beings doesn't serve the character too well. I think he similarly understands that Superman doesn't need to wear black tights, not fly or fight a giant, mechanical spider(*shudders at the though of the canned Burton Superman*). And he DEFINITELY understands Superman is not just some invulnerable, black & white character. This is Nolan we're talking about here though, the guy wouldn't have liked an idea that presents Superman in any kind of two dimensional fashion enough to pitch it to the studio.

So I wouldn't be too worried about the Nolans and Goyer not getting the story right. Whats to worry about whether or not Snyder is really up to the job and if they'll make the right casting choices.

I have to disagree about Lois Lane. I think Anne Hathaway would be great as Lois Lane. And Emma Stone is playing Gwen Stacy in the new Spider-Man reboot, so she won't be playing Lois Lane.

**POTENTIAL SPOILERS*

http://geektyrant.com/news/2010/12/22/did-david-goyer-give-away-a-plot-point-from-the-new-superman.html

^don't open that if you don't want to be spoiled(possibly). They aren't BIG time spoilers, like specific plot points or characters but it basically lays out the direction they'd be going in for characterizing Superman and doing his origin.

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
It says that it will be influenced by Secret Origins by Geoff Johns. Clark finds out later in life(not LATE late, but as a teenager) that he is an alien and it really bothers him, he doesn't want to be alien. He wants to be normal like everyone else.

Also, it looks like they're going to shoot in Vancouver.

http://geektyrant.com/news/2010/12/17/zack-snyders-superman-movie-will-shoot-in-vancouver.html

And guess what? Apparently there is a legitimate chance now of Brandon Routh reprising the role of Superman in this!!

ANOTHER Superman reboot???

The problem with Superman, and the X-Men, is that Bryan Singer fucked them up.

He turned both of the series into Harry Potter geek fests.

Why did they hand him the X-Men films in the first places? Just because he's gay and they thought he'd be able to portray discimination well? ...Ha! He clearly never read an X-Men comic book in his life until filming began. He never saw the X-Men cartoon... Knew nothing about the colossal stories and action they have delivered over the past... And it shows. The films had no X-Men flavor to them whatsoever.

But the first 2 films were a success so they handed him the Superman series as well. Ugh... Had the X-Films been some non-X-Men superhero movie like Number Four with the same plot and style, they would NEVER have reached the success they did. It was the X-Men fans, the fans of the comics and the 90's show that made his movies a success.

So there he goes repeating the same bullshit with Superman. Turning the new films into nerdy-ass fucking stupid non-badass wimpy shit.

Will the reboot be any different? Or will the new crew take notes from the "talented" Bryan Singer who can make hit films out of already popular titles?

Clearly, the cunts working on the new X-Film are going the wrong way... AGAIN. Not giving us the comics, but a kiddie Harry Potter-inspired style piece of trash instead.

Is the "Bryan Singer effect" still lingering? Will it bleed through to the next movies? The X-Men could not be saved... Will Superman?

Really, this is the first reboot and second continuity of Superman on the movies. Superman Returns was in the same continuity as the originals (Christopher Revees). The movies Superman 3 & 4 are usually disliked and for some reason (director's nostalgia) Brian Singer continued in the same timeline with Superman Returns, so it was pretty much tarnished from the start.
I thought Brian Singer did pretty good with Xmen 1 & 2, enough to cover the bases at least. But to see what Brian Singer could really do with Superman, it would've been wise to do a reboot back then for Superman Returns.
But here the reboot is now with it's first continuity of the modern age, and being directed by Zach Snyder no less. (director of 300, Watchmen) As well on top of that to be overviewed by Christopher Nolan.
Also besides, have you seen the guy they choose? Henry Cavill, now that is how to cast Superman. The kind of guy that looks like if someone punched him in the jaw, they'd hurt their own hand afterwards.

Smallville is a topflight series and I am undoubtedly going to see the movie. I hope that Snyder and co. will make great job with the reboot. As far as I'm concerned, Smallville will indeed end to the tenth season.

No, I wasn't. It's a shame that this thread didn't have discussion on the last season, especially the finale.

I have to say that season 10 was underwhelming compared to season 9. The way Darkseid was handled could have been done differently instead of blatantly turning him into Satan. I did like the build-up of the story of Lex's return, but having the tangent of little Alexander ending up as Superboy threw me off. I didn't really like that twist, because it kind of felt as if they were cramming in so much for a final season. It was great to see Michael Rosenbaum return for the finale.

When looking at the series in retrospect, it does have its share of merits but the flaws are quite glaring. I suppose part of the problem ties into the budget, but I think the main issue has to do with the writing of some of the episodes or what certain characters say. Still, it is amazing that a show like Smallville could last for 10 seasons.

The seventh season was hands down the best season of the series.

Man I loved Smallville, as said above its Flaws were glaring (slow motion, superspeed, but actually hes just lightly jogging) but being a Superman fan I got a sort of juvenile pleasure out of it. Michael Rosenbaum was great as Lex, and I love his Flash Voice too. I'd actually like him to play the Flash in a big screen adaption.

For me, the flaws of the show were mainly based on the writing of certain episodes such as the one in season 10 that was a nod to the Hangover movies. In terms of actors, Michael Rosenbaum, John Glover, and John Schneider were the best.

If you're talking flaws of the show, it's hard for me to go past the fundamental concept. I actually really like and respect the idea of appropriating the Smallville/Clark Kent: The Young Years mythology into a teen drama format, but the interest is always going to be finite. When you take that property, you do it knowing those days on the farm are only going to be interesting for so long, and eventually you're going to run up against the wall of wanting to go beyond the super speed close calls, etc. Exactly what happened. Then you're going to be bound to what you've started, and because the show was specifically created to avoid the "Super" of Superman, you've set yourself up for failure.

Personally, I would've loved if the show was built with better intentions. Rather than shying away from the Super, only to awkwardly grow those roots to be a constricted, tangled mess, I would've liked if they designed revamps from the start. Get what you can out of the teen steam, but keep The Legion in your back pocket, for example. Ideas organic to the material that avoid the weird, watered down icons that helped the show limp through the last few seasons.

Ultimately, I think it speaks volumes that Lionel Luthor -- a character who barely existed beforehand -- was amongst the very best things about the show. Adaptation wasn't on anyone's agenda. Which, on a basic level, is an absurd way to approach a licensed property, no matter how often it may be the case.

In 2001, Lex and Clark paling around in Smallville caused a minor stir, but opportunities were still rare enough that it was reasonable to go with it. It seems a shame, to me at least, coming from the comics side of things, that shows like Arrow carry on the legacy of this type of show. I think it's a flaw that the show has metamorphosed from being a begrudging concession for the source, to having existed long enough to ingratiate a sense of precedent. It didn't ground Superman himself -- he's at least managed to don a version of the red and blue and take to the skies -- but it did contribute a piece to the campaign to ground Superman.
