When I see JAX007 's render of my character I can finally put Ekimaru to rest and start off something fresh.

I am curently trying to look for inspiration, I suggest we have a little brainstorming session , just to throw out some ideas that other people might enjoy and develop.

Anyone up for that?confused

A suggestion I often give:

Look closely at the MK storyline and how it goes. Ask yourself what parts of the storyline you feel should be elaborated or done differently. For example,

"I don't think Tanya should be evil anymore."
"I think Seido should invade the Chaosrealm."

Once you've decided on what part of the MK story you want to change, create your character to cater to that change. For example, with Tanya, you can create the character who inspires her to turn a new leaf, or for Seido, you can create the character who leads the charge against the Chaosrealm, or create an agent of Chaos who decides to fight back (or join them).

I've always found it much easier to come up with characters when I tie them in with the series' storyline.

I kind of do it the opposite way. I come up with a theme or design first like... Illusionist (an idea I always toy with), nautical duelist (Annette, my entry in the last k-a-k who I was happy to see make an appearance in this thread, heh) or animal-themed aliens (Luren/Uresula), then map out the fighting style and draw the designs before really thinking about the story. The fighting style and designs probably are more important to me because it's more fun to innovate in those areas than it is to build on a story that isn't my own.

I also like to decide what kind of fighter they will be before much of the work is done like... With Annette I chose 'counterattacks and evasion' as the basis for her moves... Luren and Uresula were more well-rounded, but had a particular emphasis on creating confusion and second guessing with their unorthodox movements. Currently I'm thinking about a fighting style revolving around traps, elaborate set-ups, and screwing with the opponent's mobility. I have some pretty cruel things in mind, heh.

Of all the characters I created for the tournaments, both the ones I entered and the ones I didn't, my Persephone was the only whose fighting mechanics I focused on prior to designing her story.

I had the idea for that kind of fighter for a while, so the moment KAK7 was announced, I put Persephone into motion. I think the first thing I came up with was her fighting style. Then it was her costumes, and finally, her story. It's usually in the exact opposite order for me. lol

In any case, Persephone is hands down the most unique character I've ever come up with, and I doubt I will ever make another character that stands out as much as she did.

My new entry is out to prove that youth (he's in his young 20s) may stand against the evil forces at work. That's my aim.

[On a side note, my posts have ended the full pages a few times in this topic, I've noticed.]

My KaK8 fighter should prove a bit more well-done than Phantom. He oughtta get an odd remark on his powers.

It shouldn't be a problem though, uniqueness and originality appear to be less relevant in this context than certain other things, heh. I personally think Persephone accomplished quite a bit that most other entries didn't, but I think in the end she's the kind of character that doesn't satisfy popular demand because she exists without relying on such things. Does that make sense? Heh..... *shrug* It's not really important anymore, I suppose.

I understand what you mean completely.

Persephone's biggest flaw was that she went against the grain entirely to hard. With Persephone, I had forgotten the necessity of core aspects. While she is a great character, I do very much feel that if she was to be placed into an actual MK game, serious tweaking would have to be done to fit her in.

With my next character, however, I don't think a single tweak is needed. :)

My first two characters were inspired by their powers, but the idea I have stewing for next time is a bit more story-and-character based. At this point she's not quite developed enough for me to think of her as Final Four material, but we'll see how it goes.
In all cases, the way I approach creating my characters is I ask myself, "What's missing from Mortal Kombat? What character archetype or power scheme hasn't been done yet that could fit pretty well?" Then I run the gameplay through my mind and build from there.

For my newest character, his fighting style is pretty much general MK, so there shouldn't be any trouble there.

His fatalities are also pretty damn spot-on, with blood and gore alike, contrary to Persephone's fatalities.

What I'm most worried about is how people will receive his relation to the story. Who he is is something that has never been done, and may very well be an affliction to the MK mythology. However, there is a chance it could be received well.

For me it's always like this:

Build an appearance first /make sure he/she looks like someone that I would pick on the character select screen/

Story and Gameplay come afterwards .Depending on his strory and origins , you can kind of tweak the specials and fatalities.

This time around I want to be alot more technical , because MK is trying to be a real fighting game now, with frame data and other pro stuff ( plus being 2 times on evo in a roll) So I think I have to up my game in the gameplay departament.

I figured that, too.

I'm put a lot of effort into making my newest character's gameplay mechanics as technical and adaptable as possible. I really want people to say, "I think I'd enjoy playing as him."

Still, I want his story to be good, too. I'm really big on stories. lol

Heh, mine's gonna be along the lines of "I think I'd enjoy playing him" and "I would rather rip my face off than fight against him". grin

I wonder if for next year's tournament (if there is one) I should create a new character or develop Ameerah even more. Well this year proved that a character entering for a second time can win if the right adjustments are made...but I dont know if there is room for improvement for a character like that. You either like her or not :P

Already started working on my character for the next tournament. His name is Chaos. Won't spoil anything but he will be more intense than my previous entries Kevshi and Sphere.

My other characters im working on are Justice and Enlightment.

To answer the discussion of creating characters, I actually start by visualizing either the character or his/her moves and fatalities. Once I have the character and moves in mind, I review the MK storyline from pre-MK1 to MKA or MK9 to see where he/she can belong by race/origin, alignment, realm, place in the timeline, etc. Sometimes I have to tweak the appearance, moves, and fatalities to sync with the character's story and mannerisms.

My previous creation, Blizzard, was more of an ice-breaking experience. He was based on a character I created over 16 years ago and was practically fan-service. I have learned plenty from the other contestants' entries, such as Ekimaru, Ameerah, Eastwind, and Persephone. The aforementioned characters appealed to and inspired me to return for the next tournament with a stronger character designed from scratch.

I plan to upload teasers of my new character until his ultimate revelation in MKO KAKVIII. I can't wait to see how he stands against the rest of the roster. Hope to see you there.

Are the images inside the messages only a perk of the Flawless account? The "Settings" page will only let me change the icon to the left of my posts with a pre-rendered image, and the "Profiles" page will allow me to upload pictures, but I am unable to put them in my posts. Or is there a way to upload the images through using computer code language?

I've done it before, which is why I'm having a hard time figuring out why your image isn't showing up. I was able to single out the URL to see it, but that's as far as it went.

If you know my dA page, then you just have to look at my gallery and my Other OCs collection to see my character that I'm going to enter.

That's all I'm going to say.
