Just watching the trailer again, does anyone think that Johnny Cage is almost killed by Mileena (against the tree in her name pic) and is saved by Kitana which is why she fights Mileena in the same arena?

XiahouDun never liked him though, yeah. Mostly because he was a Kitana fan who for some reason thought that making her a love interest diminished her own importance. Personally, I tended to think that doesn't make sense since being the male lead's girlfriend automatically makes a character the female lead.

Maybe it's because it took her having to be Liu Kang's love interest for her to be such a priority instead of making that status completely on her own that makes him not like Liu Kang. Regardless of whether or not their relationship boosted her importance a lot or just a little, it's probably still the idea that association alone built her up that makes him not like the idea. Besides, being a love interest (especially being the love interest of the main character and a girl) tends to bring out the damsel in a character in at least one point in time if not the whole story.

Back to the relevant topic, I always figured that Kai would be the way Liu Kang is now if they fleshed him out, probably nothing really to back that up just a thought.

Now I'd rather have Kung Lao be the brood simply because I've always wanted a rivalry of sorts between him and Cage, he practically has to sneak into the tournament to participate while an oblivious actor is welcomed. It's bad enough that Liu gets to go instead of him but seeing Cage would probably make him furious. Especially if Cage defeating Goro was canon, ohmygawd.

According to this article, he is the one that intervenes in the fight. And though it seems that he gets his ass kicked for a moment, he probably manages to beat her. Also, it seems that Johnny also fights Liu Kang, only to get his ass kicked (it seems he is unconscious on the ground on that screenshot) while at the same time Stryker tries to defend him (seemingly failing to beat Liu Kang too).

I did not "find" them, I personally took those screenshots (and many more) and removed the machinima logo and saved the photos in uncompressed form (png format) glasses

If you are interested in downloading all the uncompressed screenshots that I took you can do so from here

Hope you like them.

Bah, Kitana should always be considered the main female protagonist anyway due to her relationship to the main villain. The only other contender is Sonya and she's not "important" plotwise, her business with Kano is a sidestory.
The fact that Kitana's position as main female protag leads her to be connected to the main male protag is just kind expected/automatic since it's not like an Outworld character who wasn't in MK1 can be the one who saves Earth from Shao Kahn, all other heroes have to be supporting cast to the main hero, the closer they are to the main plot, the more vital their relationship to the hero needs to be.

Besides, she was basically the man in the relationship, it was always her coming to him, offering unsolicited aid that he needed to win, being the one trying to initiate romantics...and on the rare occasions she "needed rescuing", he was usually either busy/unaware or outright failed until she rescued her own self. (Until Deception and after, anyway.)

That's why I always liked the relationship. Liu Kang never diminished her. If anything, she strengthened his story and he strengthened hers in a mutually beneficial way.

Liu Kang is evil?

Is it just me or am I the only one who remembers the rebellious behavior Liu Kang exhibits in the first MK movie? I would even go as far as to say that he was fed up with the monks...and the idea of Raiden. He wore a black leather jacket (usually indicative of a badass...or a bad guy in some cases), he had a bad attitude, he was bitter, and he didn't really believe in anything the good guys were about throughout a good chunk of the beginning of that movie. Almost the first whole hour of that film, I think...

This just looks like a revitalized version of that. A more visceral interpretation. Same thing, just modernized. He probably will come off seeming like a bad guy at first, if revitalizing is what they're doing.

I think it's more obvious that this Liu Kang is straight up bad. Liu Kang started off fighting for revenge in the first movie, but he still fought for the good guys. This time he definitely looks to be fighting for Shang Tsung, something he never would have done in the first movie. It looks like Shang Tsung offered him a chance to work for him, and Liu accepted. It seems like he's bitter with everyone and he doesn't even want to protect humanity. In the original movie, he just didn't believe the Mortal Kombat tournament was anything more than an old myth, and just decided to go because he wanted to get revenge against Shang Tsung for killing his brother.

I'd like to believe that Liu Kang is really a good person deep down, even if he seems bad or conflicted at first; a good guy that does bad things, or a "double agent". But the way he acts towards good guys, calling Kung Lao "Niave for thinking humanity is worth protecting" or pummeling Stryker and Johnny Cage, makes him seem completely bad. I don't think the Liu Kang from the first film would have done that. I'm guessing that this Liu Kang is a legitimately bad guy who hopefully, will turn good at the end (or at least do a good thing).

The more I look at it, the more I think I can tell about Liu Kang and what he will do during this season. And I'm hoping this is wrong, because it's straight-up generic anti-hero/antagonist stuff. But I guess it all depends on how it's done specifically.

I'm guessing he'll be introduced with the bar fight scene shortly before the tournament starts. He was once involved with Shaolin Monks, but he decided they're wrong about everything and left them to go drink away his miserable life. Then he gets in a fight with a bunch of punks in the bar, kicks a lot of ass, but eventually they overpower him and start beating him up. Then Kung Lao comes and finishes them off with this hat. Liu Kang basically goes "I didn't NEED your help, you shouldn't have come here" and blah blah blah. Kung Lao would tell him that they (the Shaolin) still need his help and they wish he would come back and help them with the tournament. But he says no and walks away.

Later, Shang Tsung comes along and offers him a "place on the ark" once he invades Earthrealm if he helps him out. Liu Kang doesn't like Shang Tsung (just like he doesn't like anyone) but he decides he may as well because it would allow him to kick ass and survive the apparently inevitable invasion. So he accepts and fights for Shang Tsung (the whole idea that you have to represent your home realm in MK would be left out of this series).

So Liu Kang becomes a force to be reckoned with in the tournament; something like an equivalent to Goro in the first movie in terms of power and danger. Basically he's the most powerful foe for the good guys. He beats the crap out of Stryker and Johnny Cage, and possibly kills Stryker. I would say that Stryker might pull the plug on one of his grenades and take Liu Kang out with him (hence the explosion in the trailer), but we were promised a fight with Liu Kang and Shang Tsung. I'm guessing Stryker tries the grenade, but Liu Kang gets away (although it might allow Johnny and Stryker to get away with their lives).

Anyways, I'm thinking Kung Lao would see him at some point during the tournament and be shocked that Liu Kang would turn his back on his own realm, which is when Liu Kang calls Kung Lao naive for trying to protect humanity. Anyways, Kung Lao basically gives up on Liu Kang and accepts that he went bad. Eventially, everyone is either killed, eliminated, wounded, incapacitated, or otherwise out of the game, except for Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, and possibly Raiden (assuming he's just a guide and not able to assist in a fight). Kung Lao basically takes up Liu Kang's original role as last man standing for Earthrealm. This is where a few different scenarios might happen.

The first scenario is that Kung Lao has to take on both Liu Kang and Shang Tsung at the same time, hence the hint at the fight between the three that I think I heard of some time ago. So they fight and fight and fight, until Liu Kang and Shang Tsung win. Kung Lao almost gets killed, but then Liu Kang realizes that that's his best friend. He calls off the deal and takes on Shang Tsung alone, but Shang Tsung wins and Liu Kang is fatally wounded. But Kung Lao manages to recompose himself while they fight and gets back up, and pummels Shang Tsung. Liu Kang says that he's sorry, he was wrong, and he shouldn't have left the Shaolin temples. Kung Lao accepts his apology, Liu Kang tells him live well, and he dies, but he dies honorably because he came to his senses and helped save the world.

The second scenario plays out the same at first. Kung Lao goes up against Liu Kang and Shang Tsung, gets beat, and is about to die. Then Liu Kang turns on Shang Tsung, starts fighting him but he doesn't get fatally wounded. Kung Lao gets back up and together, they defeat Shang Tsung. Liu Kang says he's sorry, that humanity IS worth protecting, and it almost took his best friend's death to realize that. Kung Lao asks him to come back to the Shaolin and he agrees, but is very remorseful of his actions during the tournament.

The third scenario, again, starts out the same way. This time Kung Lao loses against the two. Shang Tsung prepares to kill him, but Liu Kang tells him to stop. He doesn't and Kung Lao dies. Shang Tsung gloats that the tourament is over, as there are no more Earthrealm warriors. Liu Kang says that there's one more; him. The two fight, and the enraged Liu Kang emerges victorious, becoming the champion of Mortal Kombat, but he laments the fact that it took the death of his best friend to realize who he really was; a good guy. Humbled, he decides to go back to the Shaolin Temples and try to atone for his transgressions; that's what Kung Lao would have wanted. An alternative version of this scenario is that Kung Lao survives but is too injured to get back up. This would give Kung Lao a reason to resent Liu Kang; even though Liu Kang had been fighting for the bad guys the whole time, he gets the title of champion in the end, which he literally robbed from Kung Lao by fighting alongside Shang Tsung for the first half of the fight.

A fourth scenario, which is the weakest, would go like this; Liu Kang stays bad. Kung Lao beats him and Shang Tsung. Liu Kang either dies or leaves once the tournament is over to his dark, depressing life. This would make Kung Lao look badass for beating both of them, but it wouldn't resolve the plot between him and Liu Kang.

My personal favorite scenario is the alternative third one because it's most like the game. Liu Kang defeating Shang Tsung is one of the most iconic moments in the series, right up there with Scorpion killing Bi-Han Sub-Zero. Even in a different take on the series, it should be in there one way or another. The reason I'd prefer the alternative is because I don't want Kung Lao to die believing his best friend is evil; Kung Lao seems to be the one who's noble through and through this time. He knew Liu Kang used to be good and probably believes he still is somewhere deep down. He deserves to know that everything turns out okay in the end, even if he doesn't get the title he deserves. To me, seeing him die would be like seeing Luke Skywalker die in Star Wars without seeing Darth Vader turn on the emperor. The Second scenario would also be a good choice; It's pretty much the happily-ever-after scenario, where Liu Kang becomes good and Kung Lao gets the glory he deserves. No animosity in that case.

The reason I don't want to see the first scenario play out is because I don't really buy into the "Dying with honor" idea. Again, I'll compare Liu Kang with Darth Vader, whose last action was overthrowing the emperor and getting killed in the process. We don't really know if he truly changed, or if he just cared more about his son than himself and the emperor. If Liu Kang died, the same thing happens. Did he turn good, or did he just do a good thing as his last action? If he lives and we see him go back to the Shaolin, we'd know for sure that Liu Kang is good. Also, Liu is my favorite character. I don't want him to die!

The last scenario would be incredibly disappointing, and I would feel quite let down if I saw it play out. The main plot would be resolved, sure, but the relationship between Kung Lao and Liu Kang would be left on a cliffhanger. I wouldn't want to accept that they just go their separate ways and Liu Kang just goes back to drinking and getting in bar fights; this series will be introducing a conflict between the two, and I want to see it resolved.

Of course, everything I just wrote is completely guessing based on the trailer and most good guy/bad guy/ good guy again stories. It might (probably will) be off, maybe completely wrong. If it does plays out like that, it won't be bad, just sort of generic. My overall impression will fall to how it's wrapped up if that's the case. Maybe Kevin does have a new idea, or a few tricks up his sleeve. Maybe Liu Kang won't be an antagonist throughout most of the season. Maybe Kevin has a better idea. Or maybe (and I dread to think this) he has a worse one.

And on an unrelated note, I agree with Razor about Kitana, who I didn't consider as too much of a factor in my prediction.

Awesome find with Johnny Cage and Stryker being attacked by Liu Kang.. I'm starting to think "you're naive to think humanity's worth protecting" line is from Kung Lao coming and stopping Liu Kang from finishing off Stryker

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY THIS...

IN THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT TO THE 1995 MOVIE, SHANG TSUNG OFFERED LIU KANG TO COME TO THE DARK SIDE SEVERAL TIMES. THIS PLOT DEVICE IS NOT FRIGGIN NEW YOU MORONS. HE MAY HAVE CHOSE THE BAD SIDE AS WE CAN SEE BUT I AM CERTAIN HE WILL GO BACK TO THE GOOD SIDE!

STILL IT'S STUPID TO MAKE ANY ASSUMPTIONS BASED ON A SERIES OF UNCONNECTED SCENES, SO SIT BACK, RELAX AND WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT.

AND MAKE SURE YOU ACTUALLY KNOW YOUR MK HISTORY BEFORE SPILLING CRAP ABOUT HOW THIS OR THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. ED BOON AND TOBIAS HELPED WITH THE FIRST MOVIE BECAUSE THEY GAVE THE FILMMAKERS THEIR BIBLE TO USE.

AND SINCE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT - SINCE WE DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE MK BIBLE WE CANNOT INFER BY THE GAMES ALONE ANYTHING IS OR IS NOT CANON. WE HAVE NO REAL CLUE WHAT WAS PLANNED OR IN STORE FOR THE MK UNIVERSE.

Personally, I've never liked the original movie version of Liu Kang all that much, and I don't like the idea that that version of the character, who is completely different from the one in the games, would influence anybody else's take on the franchise.

It's probably not true that that's where Tancharoen got the idea for his version of Liu anyway though, he probably came up with this take on his own, since this Liu seems to clearly know and believe in what's going on and has chi powers, he just...has some reason to turn against humanity.

For my part...eh, I'll tolerate it and enjoy the fight scenes like I did the first movie...but I'll still keep waiting for the day when video game adaptations get decent budgets and bother to be accurate to the source material, like comic book movies are now.

Maybe when I'm 50 or 60. It'll be good to have a future to look forward to, a reason to keep going when I'm elderly and my bones ache and shit.

I don't think that time is close for MK,sir. Even though I gotta say Tancharoen MOSTLY consistent with characters, their personalities and backgrounds, because he is actually a fan like us. (I am looking at you,Kitana and Mileena of MK9)

to me the movie liu kang and this one is different.

movie liu kang was mad at shang for killing his brother...you could argue that his whole journey was to get revenge and free his brother not save earth. also he was a neutral mild mannered regular nice guy....he knew of the mortal kombat myths but he NEVER believed them. dude didnt even believe raiden was a thunder god. he thought he was a beggar and they were shocked at the power sub and scorp showed them on the boat. kang didnt show powers of chi until he struck the last blow to shang at the ending..

kevin's liu kang seems to be more of a guy experienced guy who knows what is going on. he believes the myths and he does not seem like a rookie. he already has his fire powers and he is not out for revenge. he seems to be a mercenary type of guy who is ALL for HIM SELF. he knows the earth is at stake but he does not care while the old liu kang did not believe it at all...so he laughed at the notion...not ignore it, like this guy.

with this type of attitude that this kang has...the ONLY way i see him turning good is that shang kills his brother behind his back or someone close to him....he would have to get double crossed.....and maybe with the help of kitana....

reminds me of when anakin first turned in star wars revenge of the sith with the hood.

Art thou talketh to me?

You can often tell a lot about a character from what the trailer shows. That's kind of the point of it; to give you an idea about what's going to happen, isn't it? There's nothing wrong with guessing what's going to happen. Of course we won't know for sure until we see it, but I've gotta do something while I wait.

I had considered he might have something like a triple role- He's Liu Kang first and foremost, but he's also sort of a replacement for Goro (a real tough obstacle for the good guys to face), and I thought he might be a replacement for Kano too, just like how Stryker seems to be replacing Sonya. By that I mean he doesn't really care about anything and he just sides with the person that has the most wealth and power.

But I kind of ruled that out. The way Kung Lao obviously knows him and seems surprised to see him at the tournament makes me think that he definitely used to be a good guy (not to mention that Brian Tee confirmed he had ties to the Shaolin still). I'm thinking something must have happened to him (or someone he really cared about) that made him lose his faith in humanity completely (hopefully something not trivial like not being chosen over Kung Lao).

I didn't really consider Kitana much of a factor in Liu Kang's alignment because despite the two liking each other, they didn't actually have a lot to do with each other, especially in the earlier games. I couldn't really see one of them dragging the other over to the good side. That would be like changing your religion to get married; you'd be doing it for your spouse, not so much so because you really believe it.

I can definitely see this Liu Kang turning good, based on what I saw in the trailer. The way these stories tend to go, however, is the bad good guy stays bad throughout most of the movie (or series in this case) and then turns back good at the end. I'd be really happy if this wasn't the case though; that's been done more than a few times.

If Liu Kang stays bad, I'd get the impression that Kevin really doesn't like him or that he doesn't care about him as a character. I'm guessing nobody wanted to spell it out that Liu Kang is the one hope humanity has left; that he's the only one who has a chance. So they made him this dark, troubled ex-Shaolin Monk instead. But if he's bad all the way through, it's like he's not even Liu Kang at all.

I don't care what you all think, but now that I've seen the trailer I don't want to watch MK Legacy II. I don't have faith in Keven Tanchoreon anymore and I hope he does NOT helm the future MK film and I hope Legacy gets canceled after this.

Just like MK Annihilation there is too much recasting and some characters have been miscast! Especially Johnny Cage and Kung Lao b/c their too old. What was KT thinking here??? I also hate that Kung Lao and Shang Tsung are bald!

The difference between Legacy and Annihilation is that this does not resemble a freakin' Power Rangers reject and have some weird ass cartoony gargoyle.

Plus I wouldn't blame the director for the recasting, that was probably studio BS, kinda reminds of an episode of Friends actually where Joey was forced to audition for the part of the twin brother of the character he played on Days Of Our Lives. I know that sounds stupid, but it is Hollywood we're talking about....Faithfulness to source material means nothing to them 9 times out of 10, lol.

I think they said Kuai Liang is simply a "Warlord advisor" this season. Whatever that means. So I think Bi Han is still going to the island and getting killed by Scorpy. I do like how fitting it is they have them fighting each other as grown ups in the same spot they played in as children,
