Not to dehumanize Kronika but i think she's more alien than woman.

I think kronica looks pretty badass. Maybe they were trying to switch it up with a female boss this time around, could be the case. But I think she seems pretty refreshing and seems to have a pretty cool power and story.

Its refreshing to have a female boss this time around. Its always going to be hard to live up to Shang and Kahn but sometimes change is a good thing and its a different time we live in now, so why cant a big boss be female :) I think she's going to have some pretty epic moves. Wish NRS got Cate Blanchette for her though haha.

Was really hoping for Shang Trump though...

She seems angelic but devious too.

She is the first female final boss, and the second female boss character (Sheeva served as the sub-boss of the female ladder in MK7).

I like it because she looks pretty interesting, pretty powerful, like a Goddess of time or something.

Yeah I don’t see this being some “SJW” move. Kronika seems to be really powerful, so it would make sense for her to be the final boss.

I doubt it because SJW's would see it and condemn it as demonizing women or some ridiculous crap. Remember when they went nuts over an advertisement for X-Men which had Apocalypse strangling Mystique?

If there's any character you should expect to see that crap arise with it's Cassie.

Are you implying that having a female as boss character to be SJW? I mean, should all bosses be male otherwise it's some political thing?

I get with your asking with that question. I hope the story is not influenced by the popular trends of the time like every other movie and story these days. A female boss doesnt bother me at all as long as its a powerful woman and not just there for the sake of being a female boss. If the latter was the case that would conflict with me and make me worry about the integrity of the story. It seems like she has a lot of power and "rank" already and will be a real threat though. I figure that's what the op was getting at.

Final bosses usually get their ass kicked.

Women get their ass kicked = not a very SJW thing

I don't really think they're trying that hard to appeal to be Social Justicey. They probably just envisioned the character as female when coming up with her.

Mortal Kombat has always had male bosses and I'm excited that we finally get a female boss. Killer Instinct introduced Aria as the main villain until Gargos was revealed to be the ultimate threat. Virtua Fighter has always had Dural as its villain and is a female. Tekken had Unknown/Jun in the Tag series and Kazumi Mishima was just introduced as the first main story line female boss. So it's about time to get one in Mortal Kombat.

Classic Assesino at it again. I don't see an issue with there being some variation in the final boss. What matters is that she turns out to be a worthwhile character.

Just look at MKx. No offence to anyone but we have a gay character (Kung Jin), we have bdsm mistress/slave (Ferra/Torr). Just saying.

People have really worn out the term "Social Justice Warrior" and apply it to anything now. I guess Kronika should be in the kitchen fixing Geras a sandwich, eh?

Sonya should be barefoot and pregnant and cleaning Johnny's guns.

No offense taken, we’re all just talking here.

I think SJWs and anti-SJWs both have a tendency to see abnormality in the normal. Agendas where there are none.

For MKX, there was a central storyline of defending Earthrealm from Shinnok and the game itself is about fighting at its core, but I think NRS really wanted to establish the characters as multidimensional and having some depth and what not.

I think they did this by utilizing themes that were more complex then some they’d used before.

Some examples:

-Estrangement between mother and daughter (Sonya and Cassie)

-Estrangement between father and son (Kenshi and Takeda)

-Burgeoning friendship / relationship (Takeda and Jaqui)

-Grief and forgiveness (Scorpion and Sub Zero)

-Estrangement between husband and wife (Johnny and Sonya)

-Estranged family dynamics (Johnny, Cassie and Sonya)

-The Line between protection and aggression (Raiden)

-Estrangement between a man and his community (Kung Jin and the Shaolin)

I could keep going, as there are plenty of more examples. But the main point I’m trying to make is that MKX’s story was filled with more themes, more moving parts, and more complexity than any MK, or any fighting game before it. I really don’t think there was some sort of quota that dictated “we must have a gay character.” To them, it was likely normal. Just another theme to explore in the midst of several themes.

With Kronika, I don’t see any agenda either. They weren’t trying to reach some imaginary Asian quota when they created Liu Kang or Shang Tsung. No one thought anything of normal dressed Sonya being a woman or in the military in 1992. Just as no one thought anything of Johnny Cage being a white guy, and no one thinks it’s weird to this day.

I honestly think that for this game, they had a vision for a boss, and that vision just happened to be female. She could’ve been white, black, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, gray like Shinnok, green like the Onaga or anything else, but this was what they saw when they put a final boss together. This is what they liked. I honestly don’t think it has to be anything more than that. Just another normal decision that doesn’t need to be anything more than that.

But that’s just me.

Quote: (the quote function didn't work for me somehow?) Classic Assesino at it again. I don't see an issue with there being some variation in the final boss. What matters is that she turns out to be a worthwhile character.

It's kind of funny how I come back to post after years of inactivity, and Asesino is also still here, still acting insufferable. Back in the day people dunked on him for his poorly thought-out, poorly spelled and very aggressive posts. At least it seems like he's learnt how to spell.

Actual content:

Fighting games have both reveled in and upturned stereotypes in their history. But for all the deserved flak Midway and NRS may have gotten out of left-wing culture critics (not to mention right-wing pearl clutching about all the gore and violence!), actually Mortal Kombat - sometimes unwittingly - did some pretty unique stuff in its history:

  • It's the only American game I know with a truly Asian protagonist and a supporting cast of secondary characters that is very ethnically diverse
  • It's the only game franchise I can think of with a black cyborg
  • IIRC it's the second fighting game franchise to have an openly gay character (after SF's Zangief was kinda retconned as gay)
  • MK9 and MKX actually pass the 'Bechdel test' ("are there at least two female characters on screen at some point who don't talk about men, relationships or marriage").

All of this doesn't mean Midway/NRS are progressive wayfarers in any way, but they've never been afraid to break the mould.

And finally, the exciting thing about fighting games is that it lets people (theoretically) choose any kind of character they can identify with and use them to beat serious ass. It's a virtual world in which skill beats out real-life oppressive structures, which is why I think it's awesome that an openly gay black furry can be a huge champion in this game. People may not like someone like SonicFox, but the guy proves that competence and skill can be anyone's if the playing field is level.

By the way, this is all coming from one of the whitest Euro guys you'll ever meet. I'm just confident enough in my own identity and skin that I welcome representation of other kinds of people who unfortunately often occupy the sidelines.

Uh... You do realize that DC's Cyborg is black, right? Also, I don't know if you've played many games in your lifetime, but I'm pretty sure there are a good number of games with black cyborgs. I'm not willing to do a search based on that for you because I'm not concerned with the skin color of the characters I play. I just enjoy video games so long as they portray what they advertise (unlike Battlefield V, for example) and the game has a high level of entertainment value.

Concerning SonicFox (who I respect a great deal because he's a freakin' MONSTER in the eSports scene), one thing I'll never understand is why some members of the homosexual community have to make an announcement to the world about their sexuality. To me, it's always seemed like something done in order to garner attention, in this case from the media. Personally, I feel as though one's sexuality should be kept private without that someone feeling forced to live in isolation for fear of being ostracized. Live how you live, date who you want, and love who you love. It's none of anyone's business but your own. So, why publicize it?

Eh so I was wrong on the 'black cyborg' thing, sorry.

Also to people who are not like you and me (I assume we both are white heterosexual men?), representation and visibility in culture matters to them because culture has often relegated people like them to the sidelines or worse for the better part of human history. Of course we can afford being 'neutral' on things like skin tone, sexual orientation and such - because we are part of the unspoken norm that is represented everywhere, all the time.

I have no opinion on SonicFox importing his personal life into his gaming career, by the way. It's his choice. But I do believe that he could be an inspiration to some folks who feel testy about becoming a pro-gamer in a community that is often hostile to minorities. And more people feeling welcome to play is always a win in my book.
