I assume you checked out Sonya by now... I think you know what I’m getting at here. Do I want to know? Or is it bad news?
She seems great so far. Managed a decent 15 hit 1 bar combo for 30 damage. Her strings flow very nicely. Kitanas 2nd fatality is incredible. She guts the opponent, spins on the spot creating a vacuum which plus their intestines out. Really fucking gory lol
Actually, I was referring to her signature moves (or lack there of) lol. However the rest is good to know too.
@Onaga: Cool, because I didn’t want that either and was afraid I had started it over here. *edit* I don’t know, I think the Kitana skin shown in this thread is sort of unique compared to the other outfits. However, like I said, it comes down to opinion. An “eye of the beholder” type of deal. So folks are allowed to state those thoughts. Infact, I apologize for the “that’s not true” comment. If that is what you believe, you’re more than entitled to do so.
Ahh No leg grab or Arc Kick I’m afraid. She does have a cool double kick in the air which can be good as a jump in combo starter. No dive kick either though
*sighs* Well, of course she didn’t. After all that would have made this game too perfect for me. I’ll be honest, I am so beyond sick of this happening to her. This’ll be the third time they’ve pulled this crap with Sonya. Never a straight answer as to why either.
Why do they not dare to do this with any of the others? Before anyone brings up “Well, Sub doesn’t have his ice clone move anymore (which also pisses me off, make no mistake)”. It’s not exactly the same. Sub lost one move from his arsenal. Sonya, on the other hand, was practically gutted. Just like in MKDA. They took away every signature/iconic move she had. Except one. Now am I saying she had to have ALL of them? No. However the ones that are her most iconic should always be in her arsenal without fail. The Leg Grab is her most iconic and unique move. In MK that is something that’s only hers. Something she is known for. This move is her Scorpion Spear move. The kart wheel is another move that has been a staple for her. The rising bike kick is another (though it’s ok that this one sit out temporarily because they gave her a similar move with rising punches instead). Then, to add insult to injury, not only did they take her best and most powerful move away... they replaced it with the signature move of Liu Kang! And here they are doing it again in MK11! I saw in her variation move list... that damn fly kick! Why?! Sonya is better than hand-me-downs!
The thing that pisses me off the most about this is that they wouldn’t dream about doing this to the other mainstays of the series. Spear, Ice ball, hat toss, acid spit, and etc etc... these fighters will never be without these moves. They won’t because these moves are a big part of who these characters are in the story. I doubt anyone would play a Scorpion with no spear. In fighting games, special moves are just a much a part of the fighters as their history and fighting styles are. Special moves are a big part of what makes these characters favs to the people who play them. You start switching that up (especially with the core signature moves), and that character is no longer who they were to their fans. They’ve been regressed to amateur cosplayers of their former selves. Right now, that is what Sonya appears as to me this game. A blonde fighter who dressed up like Sonya, but knows shit about her.
Boon would never have the balls to pull this shit with Scorpion. Fans would be calling for his blood. But it’s just fine to do it to Sonya not once, but multiple times! I thought NRS had learned their lesson after MKDA/MKA when they gave Sonya all her signatures back in MK vs DC... So why strip her of all of them again when you know it didn’t go over well the first time?!
Look, the drone/heavy tech crap fits way better for Cassie. Up until MKX, the only “tech” Sonya ever used were the wrist bands that allowed her to fire off the energy rings (and even that was retconned in as originally they had said the rings were the result of Sonya calling forth her Chi... it was in a magazine/book about MK 3 and the making of it and interviews about character designs and moves for the game). The rest of Sonya’s fighting style and moves centered around her martial arts and gymnastic skill. In comes MKX and suddenly Sonya’s a tech beast relying heavily on drones and tech pulse grenades. When this was never the case before. The tech and drones should have been exclusive to Cassie and Jacqui. Now Sonya’s still relying on a drone and has lost just about all of her signature moves....why? I literally see no need for them to have done this (especially with Cassie and Jacqui in the game to cover the military tech soldier roles) from either a story or design perspective.
They wouldn’t do this to anyone else and I, for one, am fed up with them doing it to Sonya repeatedly. I’m sorry. I went on a longer rant than I had anticipated. However, before judging, put yourself in my shoes or the shoes of any other Sonya fan. Think of how you would feel if your fav character of years was all but gutted and there was little left to even recognize them as your favorite main. I doubt you’d be any happier or dismissive of it than I am. Sonya has become unrecognizable to her fans. Like I said, simply a blonde cosplayer dressing the part but knowing nothing of the character.
It was said that down the line they may add more special moves to the variation move options. My last hope is that they cave a little and give Sonya back at least a couple of her signature moves (one of which HAS to be the leg grab). That coupled with the energy rings will at least make her feel like Sonya again.
