To add to what Temp has already said: MvC3 has really been vastly improved by a combination of early information and community feedback from vets. I mean, the E3 build and the TGS build look like completely different games. MK could really, really benefit from such an approach.

Oh and btw if my post stating that "they should share obvious info and if you don't want to know it then why search it?" is extremely selfish then what does that make your idea of "I dont want any info so dont release any regardless of other fan's opinions?"
Really? I thought it was mandatory by law to search for MK related information.-_-
You said yourself it's obvious stuff. So why are you on your tippy toes over "obvious information"?
Your post sounds extremely selfish. So I can't post here because of a group of impatient individuals who want everything NOW? That's not fair either. I shouldn't have to hide from MK. In the end them keeping things quiet will only make the game more awesome when you discover things on your own. That's something that would benefit us all. Not just me or certain people. Us ALL.

I agree. But that's not how your previous post came across.
Well, there's two responses to this point. The first one is that no one is saying "reveal everything now." That's a skewed interpretation of our stance, and I'm sure you know better.
But you're making it seem like those who disagree are like "Omg, We don't want information! Grrr!". I want information. I want to see the core cast. I want some gameplay videos. I want them to promote this game to the fullest But I also know that it's October and the game doesn't come out until April. 0.0
The second response is (with all due respect) that the desire for more media is more sensible than the desire to be surprised later. If you see the new media now, the worse case scenario is you'll no longer be in a state of anticipation.
...That's the whole point of waiting for a new MK game. The anticipation and excitement. Why would I buy a game if I'm not excited about it or anticipating it? I mean I do have a life outside of Mortal Kombat, it's not like I was sitting on here 24/7 the past two years. Maybe that's why I'm not so antsy.
That a cheap reason to prevent others from engaging in substantial content and fresh speculation.
You misunderstand. I'm not saying I don't want any info. I would like to see the same things that you do. We're on the same side here. I just don't need to see those things right this second. I'd rather wait until the MK team feels ready to release it. I don't want to bully them into releasing stuff.
As I said before, the difference between the two bases is that one is complaining they're hungry and the other is complaining they're too full. The first seems significantly more reasonable to me.
Speaking as someone who isn't so blatantly biased, I think BOTH sides are reasonable.
Perhaps gore, heavy storytelling, and fantasy themes are essential to the MK franchise. Bad marketing is not.
. But I think you're just using the "bad promotion" angle solely as an excuse. You're excited and want to see more. We get it.
If you look at Gamespots's popularity rankings and the traffic at Capcom forums, Capcom has by far shown to be more successful in terms of hyping their own game.
I'm not a Capcom fan. :/ So I can't really comment on what their doing. That and the fact that we're discussing "Mortal Kombat", not Capcom.
And again, you're (I presume purposely) assuming that deeply embedded secrets are somehow on the same level as Kano's model design or Smoke's bio.
Haha, actually it's you who is the one acting like that. I'm not the one who is about to piss my pants over what you call "standard information".
No one is saying "Reveal everythings NOWS!1!1!1", just standard roster characters who we all know are going to be in the game anyway.
Ok, so what's the big deal?

Because I fear your approach might be the reason this game lacks any secrets or surprises. I don't want another Deception/Armageddon.
I want info. Don't get that twisted. But I'd rather the MK team release it when they feel it's right. They are the ones making this game. They call the shots. Not you!
Us fans need to start realizing this. We have been spoiled too much these past games. Always getting what we want when we want it. Being ungrateful. Now it's time for them to take back their thunder and get in control.
They are the drivers. We are the passengers. Stop comparing MK to everything under the sun. Stop worrying about promotion when the release date is almost half a year away. For once just sit back and be a fan.

@Ahnka
Once again HOW is the release of obvious information(see examples ive stated) going to destroy the secrecy of this game? Im not asking for them to release secret characters or even debatable characters such as Stryker or Rain. Im not asking for info on how story mode plays out or whats in the Krypt. Im simply stating that they not be so hush hush about obvious characters or the bios that go with already announced characters. So stop pulling assumptions out of your ass and acting like i said them.
I know im not the creator of this game and im not telling them to do anything. I simply stated my opinion(yes im entitled to one that doesn't match yours) and like many others have stated their marketing approach isn't the best. Im not comparing MK to anyone nor have i ever im just saying that IN MY OPINION they don't need to be hush hush about obvious character+bios that aren't going to surprise anyone or ruin the secrecy of the game
Also I am a fan of MK and have been my whole life so don't tell me to "sit back and be a fan" just because I have a different opinion than you. Just because I want a little more info that won't ruin the surprises or secrecy of the game doesn't make me any less of a fan of MK than you or anyone else

I'm finding some comments here very hard to believe. Do some of you honestly think that by dripping the slightest drops of information out there to the fans that it's actually going to HELP the franchise?
The latest "update" we had was a 2minute video on youtube detailing Scorpion's past, which is possibly one of the most well known back history's any of the characters have. People even got excited to hear that it was released, just on the basis it was new. Eh, HELLO?? Does anybody not see the missed oppurtunity here? Rather than re-feed us the exact same information we already know (considering it was officially made a part of the canon story that Quan Chi resurected Scorpion in his MKvsDC bio, and in Scorpion's MK4 ending) we could have easily have had a new render of an upcoming character, or perhaps even official footage of the likes of Shao Khan/Rayden.
The existing fans have gotten so dependant on these drops of information by Boon and co, that I don't think it's actually sunk in amongst the fan how poor they're marketing is.And for the new fans? How are they expected to be engrossed and interested in a re-make of the series if there's nothing for them to really be interested in? A few video's on youtube recorded on a camera phone and a website which teases it's potential fans rather than informing them is hardly going to raise their interest.
As historic and well respected as MK is, realistically it's got competition to contend with, and leaving out this little trail of breadcrumbs is just going to cause many of it's potential and already existing fans to lose interest or support in the franchise. They need to be realistic before interest and suspense turns into irritation and boredom, because regardless of it's reputation MK still has to compete with other games in regards to sales. Bad advertising equals bad sales, and that's not good for either NS or the Mortal Kombat fans who wish for future games. How anybody could see that as a good thing is beyond me, I think WB and NS are insane for the approach they have, it's already causing a rift between the long term fans. Quite frankly, I think it's more childish of the developers to maintain this approach than it is for the fans to demand more information.
I've been keeping my ear to the ground looking for any other information I could about the game, and in the magazines I've bought, there's literally one photograph of the game in it as well as a tad snippet of information that the game will be gory...which is no news to anybody who's ever heard of the series. My own personal opinion is that they could easily release two new fight video's (which dont even have to necessarily have to include fatalitys, just footage of how the warriors fight), two new characters and two new bio's a month, and that would be a perfect way to gain interest and attention towards the game. It reveals nothing secret, still keeps a lot of cards close to the chest, and keeps the fans happy. Win win situation.
This whole countdown approach is both strange and incredibly unnecessary, if they want to tease fans with secrets, at least wait until the game is released and keep them within the game (similar to Reptile appearing in the Pit) rather than starve the fans of something that they clearly want. It's not an unreasonable request, yet for some reason some loyalist fans seem to think we're being unfair for asking for it. Baffles me completely, there's no other video game on the market that could get away with it.

What defines a proper rate? Shouldn't a proper rate keep fans excited? That's why we keep comparing MvsC3 to MK's marketing, because if you visit the Capcom forums, it's clear the Capcom marketing has been more successful. All the MK marketing is doing is torturing hardcore MK fans that are gonna buy the game anyway. The MK2011 is out of sight/out of mind for the rest of the gaming community.

The unreleased character haven't been seen, we don't know how they fight or what their stance or special moves are. Everyone has idea's but no one has a 100% knowledge on that. That's a surprise when its released. I'm not saying they shouldn't release new info, and I never said that. The mk team wanted to go back to the classics. They aren't gonna reveal everything b4 the game is released. They are keeping things secret. That's how mk1-3 was. I wouldn't mind having all the people we know for a fact will be included shown. Liu Kang, Sonya.. Etc they can show all of those, but we know not everyone will return.. Questionable would be Rain, Noob, Kabal(hope they're in). Those characters should stay secret till the game is close too release. I love new information and I love watching new gameplay and all of that. Its "proper" release because its what they were going for. Mk1-3 I'm just saying people need 2 be patient. Its not like we have 2 wait months and months for new info. I'd love 2 see everything revert too the magazine days just so I could see everyone squirm. People are so ungrateful for the news we do have. They always want more more more and its annoying. If people calm down and stay patient they'll get news and it'll be worth the wait. Everyone should be grateful that they're even making another mk game. The whole website countdown thing was hilarious. All these people bitching over it. If I were the mk team and saw how my fans were acting like obsessive little children I wouldn't have released shit.
Yeah, mvc is releasing tons of shit, but when the game gets close 2 release they are gonna run out of shit 2 reveal and that's where mk can take control and start flooding out information and take the torch away from capcom. Stupid marketing strategy? Nah, when mvc reverts to a trickle of info and mk begins a downpour people will look back on this and they won't feel stupid, they'll just be pissed. They'll get over it go buy the game and be giddy like a bunch of school girls. Then the cycle will repeat and we'll see more demand for info and the mk team slowly distributing it. Supply and demand. Mk has a plethora of info they could drop but they aren't, people demand but have to wait on it. When they info finally gets released its appreciated more by a lot of people because wait built suspense. Everyone else with find a reason too bitch.

I would give some of these guys a break if they would stop trying to use the promotion/marketing as an excuse for them to be greedy. People are not grateful. What happens when they do see the so called "obvious stuff"? They're going to want MORE and more and more until the whole game is revealed. It's been that way with the past 3 games.
They say they don't want to know the secrets. Yeah...but you're going to keep wanting more until there's nothing left.

Yeah bud listen. You don't know me or anything about me. You have no idea how im going to react to things or what im going to want. All im asking for is info that won't break the secrecy of this game. Like I've stated earlier I don't even want them to reveal characters that are debatable like Noob, Stryker or Rain. I just want to get a consistent flow(doesn't have to be all at once or everyday or even every week) of info for things we already know. Pretty much characters who have no chance of being left out, bios of already announced characters and maybe a full length video of a match that Reptile ACTUALLY wins. That's it. I hardly see how that's being greedy or demanding too much so don't just lump everybody together that doesn't share your opinion and throw a stereotype on us. I'm not going to be wanting more and more until there's nothing left. Give me a consistent flow of info from now until release that won't ruin the secrecy of the game and I'll be happy. So stop with your stereotypes and assumptions because you're just coming off as an ignorant asshole. Not once did I bash your opinion but yet I'm here having to defend mine because I'm labeled as a greedy fanboy who wants and wants and wants until there's nothing left. Yep because you know oh so much about me

Fair enough. I didn't mean to offend, this is just a subject I'm passionate about. I've stated over and over that I want the SAME things you guys want(but you all seem to skip over that) I just don't understand why *some people are acting like we need to know that stuff like right this moment in time. But I get what you're saying. I do. I also would like a steady diet of info. I just fear the MK team might take it to the extreme and bam- we have another game with nothing left to discover.
I understand where you're coming from. No disrespect meant.

Remember guys, "Slow and steady wins the race". Marvel vs Capcom3 is sprinting at the beginning of a marathon race. When they run out of steam (content). They're screwed while mk gets rewarded for biding their time and at the end can rip the spotlight off of the competition. MvC3 also has more characters and arenas then mk will have so they have more content that they can release in a shorter time frame. We have 26 fighters and 18 arenas. I know mvc will have 30-40 fighters. (don't keep up with this game correct me if I'm wrong). We've been shown around half.
We have around 12 character reveals here. A little under half. I'll say again, the rate at which we're receiving info is perfectly justifiable and commendable. "Patience is a virtue". I'm damn thankful for all the info we have. I'm very passionate about this subject, and if anything I've said has come off disrespectful please don't take it that way. I never have any intentions to offend my mk community.

Exactly. MVC3 have A LOT of content they can show. MK? Not so much. So I still don't understand why people keep trying to compare the two. It's kind of like being a little kid and wanting a cookie just because you see a sibling with one.

Then my apologies for taking offense to your comments. I've seen all the massive flame wars and people bashing people do on here so I do apologize for jumping to the conclusion that you were trying to do that. I do understand what you're saying and agree on the fact that you don't want the end result to be a game with nothing left to discover. I definitely do not want that to happy either as that would definitely hurt the experience of the game. So, as long as we get a steady stream of info on a regulated basis I'll be happy. I'm sure that even if they went the route of releasing to new characters a month(just using as an example) or something, as long as they stayed on a consistent pattern, it wouldn't be that bad for the simple fact that we'd know for sure when we're going to get more info and could look forward to it rather than them just randomly throwing stuff out there
EDIT: When I say a regulated basis I don't mean every day or every week or such. I'd just like for them to get some sort of pattern going so we know when to look forward to new content. That eliminates the need for people to get mad at no new info since they'll know when new info is released. Heck i'd be happy if they did something like this:
There are 26 Characters, they have announced 10. We have 6 months till the game comes out. So maybe they could release 1 new character the first week of every month and do their page on the website. Then the following week release the bio vid. Then the next two weeks release gameplay(Maybe two full length battles) that shows their attacks, specials, game-winning poses, and MAYBE one fatality(Although I'd prefer those kept secret. By the time the game comes out they would have announced 16 characters with 10 hidden. This is obviously just an idea meant to convey my opinion but something like this would make me very happy

That's exactly the reason I feel its an issue. They don't have a good schedule quite yet. We are however dealing with a lot of new stuff that we never had to put up with when NS was with Midway. So they're still probably working on getting everything settled and the web design team broken in. I'm sure after all the issues w/in the team get fixed we'll discover everything will drop on schedule.
BTW: the MKast got pushed back till Monday(at the earliest). So next week sometime we'll get the mkast. In 8 days we get a new character and arena reveal with gameplay videos and everything of the 2 revealed items. Then about 4 days from there the countdown on the website ends and the discussion boards possibly open up. We got a scorpion bio vid 2 days ago and that's possibly the start of a new bio vid a week, maybe friday we'll get a new arena bio. Yeah, its shit we already know but there's also tiny snipits of new footage during those videos so it isn't really a bad thing.
First up, props to the community for not flaming the shit out of each other over this. Secondly, I think what's hurt the marketing the most isn't necessarily the pace in which things have been released, it's been the execution of said releases. There was plenty of hype around the countdown and site release that was met with poor reception largely because it was implemented so haphazardly. Now there's this lull in information while the Netherealm team works to play a bit of catch up in fixing what was unintentionally delayed.
My guess is that once the site is open with full functionality and more regular carrots are slung in front of the fanbase, this climate of "hungry for updates" will begin to change.

Well back in the day before the interweb we had video game magazines and they gave us Huge amounts of info on the new MK games. For me i just would like them reveal more characters show a small bio and some combo vids of the characters i for one dont want to see anymore fatalities. Back in the day, before MK 4 came out midway did a tour all over the US before the game came out. I think if they did events like that and let the real fans play they would get good feedback and make some good changes. Like when i went to E3 and met Ed Boon and he asked me and a friend about how should we have the character select screen for Armageddon. he was throwing around an idea of a spinning pillar, I told him you should group the characters like all the ninjas in one area then all the females and bosses in another area. I dont want to say its my idea but he did listen. As we all know the people play the game at pax sucked. Let us fans play. I compare MVC3 to mortalk Kombat becuase i am a fighting game fan Tekken Street fighter MK.

Seriously, the two people that agreed with the OP's sentiments were pretty respectful to everyone else. Likening them (indirectly or not) to "greedy children" is totally uncalled for. They phrased their earlier opinions respectfully and they were meet with silly mischaracterizations and over-defensive hostility.
Yeah, I don't think MK is dropping the ball with marketing; but Jesus Christ. Step the argument up beyond name calling and the martyrization of the MK team.

Excuse me? We have been pretty civil in here for the most part. There was some heated debate but nothing as far as "arguing" or "flaming". If anything you're making it seem a lot worse than it is. Either way it's over. So let's keep this on topic.

All i would like is a nice steady flow of info. Smash bros had a great website and got tons of Hype. every two weeks a new piece of info comes out or a new vid cast. its Kind of like waiting for your favorite show to come on. Really thats why we all come on this website is to get all the MK news we can get right? I think they will get it right. Dont Get me wrong I love MK and always will. Its like Lost the fans love it, but when they would skip the show for two weeks fans went nuts!!!!!

The marketing is bad. Very, very bad. WB could easily reveal one character each month or release a video demonstrating a character's fighting style every week and it would be enough. What have we gotten since the revelation of Cyrax and Kitana? A video featuring the history of the pit, a Scorpion bio and a site update that told us virtually nothing. It's ridiculous
Of course MK is going to compared to MvC3 in terms of marketing. They're both being released in Spring and have to compete with each other. Capcom has been doing a helluva job at marketing MvC3. WB really needs to push it up a notch if they want to compete at the market

Call me the perpetual optimist but, I'm guessing that despite a rocky start, things will start to shape up over the next few weeks. So while I certainly won't defend the marketing of the past month or so, I don't think it'll be indicative of what to expect in the upcoming months.

Some of you need to step away from the computer every once in awhile. If your sitting here constantly pressing F5, refreshing the page waiting for an update, of course your gonna be disappointed. However, if you were to check back in weekly or even bi-weekly, you'd be pleasantly surprised how often content is being released. How can you release a "steady" stream of info for game releasing 6 months from now? You'd run out of "good/new" content pretty quickly. Personally, I believe come January-February, information will start flooding in.

This is a very intelligent post. I couldn't agree more. The game is six months away and the only argument people have to combat that is to say "Oh well MVC3 is doing this!". If MVC3 was canceled, should MK '11 be too? Since we're playing "follow the leader"? Eventually MVC3 will run out of things to show and that's when MK will step up and steal the spotlight.
