i give it a week and then people will be saying oh now we are getting too much info..... people are never happy lol
True, if we were getting loads people would be complaining, which is fair enough..I mean they shouldn't give away to much, or too little. Atm, I feel its kind of quiet, but I'm sure there will be plenty in the coming months, ha even the next couple of weeks.
I don't want too much to be given away at all, I just wish we could get some nice gameplay videos of what we know is there. Like say Sektor vs Cyrax vid with fatality in HD. Stuff like this, then little secret things here and there. But I agree, keeping certain things hidden is good. I want some bloody surprises!

With what we've gotten from Mortal Kombat in the past decade I feel like they're keeping things secret because they already know the game is bad XD. Seriously guys, this is Mortal Kombat...you know...kind of a secretive game
Releasing information or videos or whatever doesn't have to mean shoving everything about the game down our throats. Why not release gameplay videos of characters we've already seen. Just something to get people excited about the game.
Keeping things secret is clearly not creating the giddy, excited Christmas morning feeling the I guess the marketing team is trying to create.

Wtf? Speak for YOURSELF! Don't bring us down just because you want to open your presents 6 months early.
I agree. Netherrealm seems to be twiddling their thumbs as they seem to be unsure of themselves.
MvC3 has the advantage that it's made by Capcom, and everyone knows that it's going to play at least as well as MvC2, which was so broken it wrapped back around to being not broken. It at least has longevity in its gameplay to it.
Mortal Kombat doesn't have that luxury, and if the game ends up sucking ass the game will have NOTHING to go on except some secrets in-game, which quite frankly doesn't mean jack in the long run. Netherrealm needs to get their shit in gear and stop releasing things we already know about and prove the game is shaping up well.

I'm gonna have to compact the responses instead of responding point by point. It would take way too long to segment quotes for length reasons.
The argumentative fence seems to have shifted to the point where the disagreement isn't clear. We're not disagreeing over minimalist marketing vs. abundant marketing; both those things have their pros and cons.
The questions is whether WB's marketing, as it stands right now, is good or bad. My thesis is that not only is it bad: it's completely indefensible. They haven't released any genuinely new media in over two months, and as a direct result, there is a the lack of interest in MK2011 regarding the general gaming community.
They can't even give us polished gameplay videos of things we've already seen. The Cyrax footage was not even close to high quality (I don't even think that GT demonstration was direct feed). Almost every fatality we've seen has been viewed through bootlegged videos on youtube. What genius at Warner Brothers thought it was a good idea for the fans to see every fatality for the first time in bad quality fan footage?
And then they had a countdown for old information which wasn't even displayed on time. And no, Kahn's almost-pants does not count as substantial content. On top of that, the website didn't even feature all the revealed characters. What gain is there to holding back hi-res images of Kitana or Cage? It just doesn't make any sense.
I realize both you and Ahnka are claiming, "we never said they shouldn't release new info," but that is exactly what WB is doing. If you defend their current marketing, then you pin yourself to the claim, "releasing no new info for two months was somehow justifiable." That is the stance I'm against.
On top of that, the MK team has never been secretive about their marketing till now. I remember seeing the MK3 select screen more than half a year before the game came out. Perhaps they are trying to take on a "secretive" approach, but the point is that it isn't affective. The only people who care about Mortal Kombat on the level of secrets are people who are going to buy the game anyway.
There seems to be another "fence shift" in regards to complaining. People say "People are gonna bitch no matter what they reveal, so it doesn't really matter when they reveal everything." This isn't a counterpoint to anyone's argument. No one is trying to make a case that the forum should be complaint free and we need a marketing plan that would see that cause through. I just want WB to adopt a marketing strategy that properly promotes the game and pleases the fans. That's not hard. Capcom is doing it right now. At the very least, they're not deceiving fans into thinking they're getting new information with phony countdowns.
To be fair, Capcom has more characters than MK2011 (40+, I believe). They do have more buffering space when it comes to promotion. I'll give ya that.
All I'm getting at is that in the end, we're consumers. Mortal Kombat is not my church; I already have one of those. This isn't about being grateful, it's about failing to meet a very real demand. I say they should take this opportunity to fight the crowd cynicism that believes MK can never have deep gameplay. Let's fight that fight.
If anything, Netherrealm Studios needs their own version of Seth Killian. Syd Killian.
Yes, unreasonable people will complain. Let them. It doesn't cost me anything. I'd rather have a successful MK game than a complaint-free forum.
So the problem is that fans are upset at the lack of info because they want new info and are therefore looking for new info? Well, yeah. I could have told you that.
But that isn't a defense of the marketing. That's just attacking the fans for (heaven forbid) wanting to see more the new game.

very eloquently put.
Roster is stated to be about 25-30 Characters (Excluding DLC).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Scorpion
2 Sub Zero
3 Raiden
4 Cyrax
5 Mileena
6 Johnny Cage
7 Sektor
8 Nightwolf
9 Shao Kahn
10 Kitana
11 Reptile
12 Kung Lao
Min: 25 - 12= 13 remaining characters to be reveled.
Max: 30 - 12= 18 remaining characters to be reveled.
The number of Fighting Arenas is stated to be around the 18 mark.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Shang Tsung's Throne Room
2 The Deadpool
3 Jade's Desert
4 The Pit II
5 The Living Forest
6 Kahn's Kolliseum
7 The Bell Tower
8 City Rooftops
9 The Bridge
10 The Cathedral
11 Scorpions Lair
18 - 11= 7 remaining arenas to be reveled.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Min TOTAL: 13 unrevealed characters + 7 unrevealed arenas= 20 unrevealed content.
Max TOTAL: 18 unrevealed characters + 7 unrevealed arenas= 25 unrevealed content.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We still have around 6 months for the MK9 release, meaning we still have 24 weeks. Lets suppose each week we should have either 1 character or 1 arena revealed.
Since we still have 20 to 25 unrevealed content and 24 weeks where each week 1 content is revealed, meaning the MK9 marketing plan is on the right track. Unless, they will still not reveal at least 1 content per week.
Starting from now, if 1 content is revealed each week the info will be on the right track.

I'm banning MK for now, an all media stop. I remember 20 years ago when nothing was known about mortal kombat and it just blew me away when it was released.
In this new are with internet you can get to know almost every little detail before the game is released, taking away all the newness (if thats a word).
I like to be surprised, so i would encourage the team to not release that much info, just an occasional teaser.

You've just got your history wrong. Midway never employed a purely secretive marketing. There were tons of magazine features and ads for most of the MK games. The only one that didn't was the first game because it was a budget title made in 10 months by a starting staff of four people. Specifically for MK1, Boon was the only programmer!
On top of that, marketing for arcades as opposed to console games requires a different approach. They're completely different methods of bringing in revenue; it wouldn't even make sense to advertise non-stop half a year before release.
Not only is this no-info nonsense completely selfish in regards to the rest of the fanbase, but it's based on a falsehood.

I agree with TemperaryUserName, and the kicker is I don't really care if we get new info or not. He's been pretty dead on about the topic at hand. As far as gamers are concerned, Netherrealm has done a piss poor job. Most people I've talked to about the game aren't even aware of it or have shown disinterest.
Considering that they're trying to impress WB with the new game(Otherwise they'll be out of a job) they need to be putting more out there. How are they going to attract people back to the series if the marketing is so exclusive that only the MK community even knows about it?
And I'm sure it's been mentioned but the website doesn't even count at this point. Right now it's fairly difficult to navigate and what you get is so vague that it breeds confusion. Add to that, the fact that known characters haven't even been added to the website. It's not a terrible website, but it shouldn't have been launched until it was complete. Right now we have a site that's probably only 30% complete.
Like I said I don't care that much if we get new info or not, I'm still going to buy and play the game. But NR studios is pushing that they were trying to get the casual gamers back into the series. So far they're failing horrribly. They've hardly kept the hardcore MK fans happy with what's come out. So how do they expect to attract casual gamers back? Super mega secret exclusive releases? That makes no sense.
If you value the idea of another MK after this one you should be encouraging new info if only to keep the series alive. Midway rode MK to the ground for what ever cash it could pull out. WB won't work the same way. If the game fairs poorly, WB will drop the title. WB can afford to drop them if they muck this up. WB will drop them if they lose money.

Here's how I see it. I may be wrong, I may be right but this is how I see it:
No matter what kind of information there is, people are always going to bash it someway or another. Take a look at the Kahn render, people are already bashing at how he looks "weaker" than what he usually looks like, but we barely even got to see what he looks like compared towards another character in-game. Thus, resulting in so many people against Kahn now all because he's got a new look, which are leg guards which I have mistakenly thought they were pants.
With the amount of in-game footage and all the fights we've seen, the most I've seen people become real bitchy about are how the people play as characters. Seriously, we're complaining about how people play a testing game rather than the game-play itself. I look as if that's the most embarrassing thing to complain about because well, so what if there's people not playing the game as perfect as you guys play it. To be honest, you guys are just looking completely weird because you're whining about how people play the game differently than you.
Whatever is released we're never going to be satisfied because there's something to complain about, right down to how the game is played by other people. We'll never be satisfied until the game is in our hands and we basically have five-six months more of this mess until we get the game.
The speed at which the game info is being released is a good pace, how everyone continues to think this is too slow well... I'm sorry, but there's nothing that we can do. Where I'm currently residing at, I could locate his building, march right into the building and demand Boon to show off more, but unfortunately I'm not that kind of a fan who wants everything given to us within a matter of a heartbeat so I won't march into NS.:

I'm with you about MK team are releasing info on time. But concerning fans complains this will actually help MK team to enhance their game before its release. I know some complains are exagerated and the MK team knows that. But other complains are in their place, for example Kitana's hair was so obvious to be rejected by the majority of fans. From this point they might fix it or at least they will give her a different hair style in her alternate costume.

I know some complains are exagerated and the MK team knows that. But other complains are in their place, for example Kitana's hair was so obvious to be rejected by the majority of fans. From this point they might fix it or at least they will give her a different hair style in her alternate costume.

Well of course there are complaints that are reasonable such as the one you stated about Kitana and her hair issue. But there's been a lot of stupid complaints that have been popping up lately that aren't really reasonable to complain.

Yeah pretty much agree with everything Icebaby said. Even though it's harsh and true,MK has some of the most whiniest fans to ever live and the sad thing is other fan groups from different games know that. Hell why do you think when it was between RAAM and Shao Kahn for the baddest video game villian that people voted for RAAM? It was that they knew it would send the MK community into an outrage.
People need to realize noone is making you come to these sites on a daily basis and look for new info, so don't blame others for something you CHOOSE to do.

If you ask me the problem is not that the info is coming in to slow, but rather how it is presented.
First there were 8 characters revealed at E3 and the only thing we got officially from the MK team was a 8 minute long presentation. Then nothing for 3 months when Kitana and Cyrax are revealed. But the reveal was only 5 screenshots, and then we had to wait till PAX were the only official info was a 5 minute long tag team fight. The rest was just videos of random people who were jumping at each other all the time. Whenever MvC3 reveals a character they release a 1 minute long video featuring that character and his combos.
Then we have the website. A big flashy countdown for a site that doesnt work and when it finally gets to work there is nothing new there, just stuff we already know with childish descriptions of the characters. Not even all the revealed characters are available for choosing.
The rest are some boring interwievs.
I dont mind to wait for new info since i will know everything when i buy the game, but the way we are getting info is plain bad, and doesnt really help promoting the game.
Something like a new gameplay video every week between two characters already revealed would be nice.
To sum it up: Right now things are bad, but i believe that the MK team will wake up in the near future and that things will get better. Maybe in the coming weeks already.

You're exactly one of the people who I'm talking about when it comes about complaining with this game. Mortal Kombat doesn't need to release the game's info and in-game stuff in the same way that MvC3 does. They don't need to be one big copy cat just because not too much is being released.
They don't need to do that, how they're showing off all this stuff is finally what they should have been doing for a long time now.

I don't think childish descriptions would confuse 90% of the community here with how Sub-Zero is being portrayed in this game.

A lot of good stuff have been coming out of those interviews, were you expecting more of a video clip instead? Not everything is released via trailers and clips of the games you know.

Hmm, I'm on Facebook every day, and there are people who never played Mortal Kombat before. Once they saw a trailer for the game, they got really interested and started to say "hey I'm gonna get this game when it comes out, looks really cool!"
How they're promoting the game... It's not helping? This site literally jumped 5 inches off their computer chairs once the very first trailer came out, and you're saying that they're not helping the promoting at all?

True they dont need to be a copycat but i never said they should release info the way that MvC does, i just said that the way how they are releasing the info is bad. When Kitana and Cyrax were released we got 5 screenshots. Would it be so hard for each character to have a 1 min long gameplay video when he is revealed? Or do you think this would already be too much? Also some gameplay videos every week or so, do you think it would be way too much and spoil the *secrecy* of the game?

Yes i watched some interwievs and there were some interesting points, but the thing i was trying to say is that interwievs are boring to watch and dont really help to promote the game. I could be wrong here but i just feel that way.

Well, lots of people get excited when they see things, but this doesnt mean they will buy them, especially when they dont get any info at all for months. I could be wrong here but if this MK doesnt sell well it will probably be the last, so i think they should improve something about their marketing strategies.

It would be too much to be honest. I would like to learn how to play as these characters for myself rather than having a video on how to play as that character becuase each character acts differently. I feel that would be ruining the fun. If all of the characters are to fight different from each other, then there really shouldn't be a video showing us how to play as that character. I just feel that would be rather too much information being revealed.

This site jumped on all of the biographies that were released for the characters on the site. Majority of these users are confused on the way they worded Sub-Zero's biography when it makes total sense. Maybe some people are not that good of readers, some may not really understand.
But I saw someone else mention that the site was still unfinished when they released it. They should have fixed the site better before they revealed it to us.

It's your opinion that you feel that interviews are boring, but unfortunately, they tell us things on what to expect from the game rather than having us see it for ourselves. Not every piece of information should be leaked via clips, which was what I said earlier. But still, it's your opinion whether or not you think interviews help promote the game.

The way they're promoting this game is just fine, there's just so much complaining about the useless things that make it seem like they're not doing it the right way. So they're not promoting as much stuff there is in this game out to us, big deal. But what everyone doesn't understand is that we have until April to get fed with the information. APRIL. That's six months. I'd rather be stuck with no information for a while rather than having everything spilled to us within the first two months after the announcement.
Because if they spilled everything so quickly within the time we have right now, how is this game supposed to be what NS is expecting it to be? There's six months left of fixing the bugs and errors in this game. There's six months left for us to figure out who's in this, what arenas are in this, and what exactly is the main purpose of this game's story going to be all about rather than having Raiden go back in time.

You'll learn eventually. It will come to you.
On quoting:
When you click on a "reply" button and you're taken to the blank message field, if you look at the bottom you'll see an " add original" button below the emoticons. Clicking on that will post everything from the message you're replying to as a quote block. If you want to post seperated quote blocks, this forum uses HTML tags so they begin and end with "<>". Quote boxes for example are {!Quote}TEXT{/!Quote}... replacing "{}" with "<>". There's a general HTML faq sticky in the General Discussion forum as well. Hope that helps.

You brought up some amazing points, Icebaby.
I seriously can't believe fans were complaining about how people were playing the game. Are you serious? Smh, thank God I wasn't here to witness that tragedy.
@Darkhound74
MK fans are so whiny and so overbearing. There's a huge difference between critiquing and just being asses.
It enrages me that after these past 3 games, the MK team have seen the light and are trying to keep things in the dark and now everyone is all "OMFG!! Your marketing sucks!!!111 Give us infozzz!!!".(Yeah, like you geniuses know a damn thing about marketing)
They keep saying "We don't want the secrets revealed, we just want to see the rest of the main cast who we already know is in". Ok, I do too, but why must we see it all in one sitting?
If they give us a look at all the so called "obvious stuff" then you better get fucking comfy because that's all you're going to get for the rest of the six months. Unless the MK team are idiots and spoil the secrets. Then when you get the game it'll feel like you already played it before and there would be nothing to discover. Would all that bullying the MK team to release info be worth it?
So I like being in suspense and anticipation. And while I know Kano, Sonya, Liu ect are in the game, it would make it freaking exciting when we do finally see them. That's the fun of awaiting a new MK game. The anticipation.
Unfortunately times have changed and we're currently living in the "NOW!!!111" world.

Well you can always choose not to watch the videos(obviously), or do you get a sudden urge whenever something is released and you cant stop yourself from watching it? The reason why i would like to see some more gameplay from people who are not *jumpers* is because i am still a little unsecure about buying the game, and right now i cant really tell if the gameplay will be as technical and deep as they are making it out to be.

Well i did said there were interesting points in some interwievs but what i meant with my post is that they are boring to the *casual* crowd. Lets say a friend, tells you (a *casual*) about the new MK game and how it is awesome etc... You then go on youtube and type *MK2011*, and what do you get? Videos of *jumpers* and a lot of interwievs with like 2 official gameplay videos.
The way they're promoting this game is just fine, there's just so much complaining about the useless things that make it seem like they're not doing it the right way. I know there are still six months till release and i have no problems with waiting for new information, but once again i ask you if it would be so bad to release some official gameplay videos (with no *jumpers* playing) every now and then with characters you have already seen how they play? EDIT: Dammit i quoted wrong :( My next post will be Quoted perfectly! (i hope)
I just really don't want an MKD and MKA situation all over again. Pretty much everything was known about that game (except the secrets in Konquest..that was known days later though) before the game released. They even revealed the Liu Kang zombie thing MONTHS before the game released in Game Informer.
