I'm actually surprised that Li Mei has this big of a fan-base. I've always loved her character, and I did think she brought something entirely new to the MK storyline (especially regarding the mainstream females, who at that point were all Edenians sans Sheeva and Sonya). But hearing all of this defense when the troll is trolling is like music to my ears.

I do think that the chances of having more than six on the non-DLC roster are slim, but if they decide to bring in more from the post-MK3 era, I'd like to see Nitara, who's new look would most definitely be interesting. Of course Sareena is always an option too, as she was very active during this era.
EDIT: I think they accept the fact that you hate her, Sincubus, but the thing is that you keep going on and on about it, changing your words (eg joke character to not joke character) and you're being straight up obnoxious (eg"everyone knows I'm right", etc).

Well this topic is about FEMALE fighters right? So if people say they would LOVE to see her in the game, I have my rights to say I HATE to see her back.

Because I hate freaking Li Mei? Some people hate the entire MK 2 and 3 cast.

I love almost all characters from Mortal Kombat except for Li Mei (and some others most people hate) because she just reminds me of tekken, can't help it, and I hated tekken when it hit the stores and all those irritating fanboys started to hate MK because tekken was there to take its place.

I don't care that you like her, I just want you to accept the fact that I may hate Li mei and I can tell what I want about her, if you find it irritating just ignore me, works better, cuz Li Mei (and blanting about wanting two sub-zeros in the game and keep on blanting about how Rain is a joke) will trigger a negative reaction from me, she is an unique character in that way.

Here's a good suggestion; rather than complain about her being "too much like Tekken" (which still boggles my mind), how about coming up with ways to improve her? I do that with characters I don't necessarily like all the time. Like, say, I'm not a fan of Sheeva, but I'd love to see something new done with her. I see untapped potential, especially with her loyalty to the Shokan people, her rivalry with the centaurs, and her being the personal bodyguard of Sindel. A lot can be done with that.

Similarly, Rain, as much of a joke characters as the MK developers admit he is, has potential as a half-god with claims of royalty. He's the brother of Taven and Daegon, and an old ally of Kitana that cowardly chose to save his own skin rather than stand for what he knew was right. Again, a lot can be done with that.

Li Mei is a character full of potential. She evolved greatly in the short span of one game (some characters, like Johnny Cage, never evolve at all). So, what would you do to capitalize on that potential? How would you have her dress? How would you have her fight? How would have her story progress?

It's foolish to hate a character because of some misguided sense that Boon was tossing a bone to Tekken players (he wasn't). I don't hate Rain, but the ONLY reason Rain exists is because the team was having fun. He's a reference to musical artist Prince. Purple Rain, get it? And then he becomes an actual prince. Joke comes full circle. How you can lend more credence to a character created as an homage to a man who changed his name to this:

than an actually, fully developed, fleshed out, original character with a dramatic story arc and a wide variety of moves, visual motifs, and even moral alignment is beyond me.

We get it. Some of us just can't help pointing out the holes in your arguments though. First you say she's a "joke character". Then you say she's a Tekken character because she is a "schoolgirl". When we point out she looks nothing like a schoolgirl, you say her pants make her a schoolgirl. Then to top it off, now you're saying it's her name that reminds you of Tekken. Are you even sure what the hell it is that makes you think of Tekken?

There is nothing wrong with liking a fighting game series outside of Mortal Kombat, a person can like both you know. Your hatred against Tekken is just baffling to me because it seems to have no merit or reason.

At the end of the day, you've said your peace. You don't like Li Mei. You aren't offering any new thoughts about her, so why do you keep going on and on about it?

Amen! Haha

Regarding Jade, I'm almost positive she will be in it, but I'm interested in how they're going to do her this time. Hopefully she will look remarkably different from Kitana and Mileena while still staying with her Edenian look. And hopefully something new and fresh to her story as well, maybe expanding on her rivalry with Tanya (did the two have a relationship before Shinnok's invasion?)

Okay i'm happy SOMEBODY on here talks some justice, all those Chromes and Razors only make me post more negative shit about her, they LEECH it from me.

But what would I do to improve her... hmmm difficult, I would cut the name, the appearance, I would give her a new weapon (a whip), I would cut the chinese/japanese looks. uhm... wait... then there will be a new character all togheter.

I think I have problems with her being a chinese girl, don't like that, and you never can change that (that would look silly if they change her entire looks, look at what they did with sub-zero, going from total chinese man to american in one game) i'm not a racist, but I just don't like that kind of things in Mortal Kombat.
I love Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sub-Zero and all those other chinese-looking characters, but Li Mei goes beyond that, she gives me the feeling that Boon just wants a chinese-looking girl in the game and he puts in her ONLY for that reason.

I agree that she really improved in MK:Deception tho, her outfit with the armor is cool, but that stupid outfit in MK:DA gave her a scar on my memory... just dislike it SO much it hurts, also her having Sai swords was a bad thing to do.

Rain controls the weather and water, I love the color purple, and that stupid prince song (I actually love it but whatever) doesn't excist in the MK universum so it doesn't bother me at all...

Also I would not mind to see a familiar character like Rain, a male edenian dressed in purple that is not called Rain, but Tempest or maybe Monsoon, it's all fine by me, but I love weather characters so much, I don't care if they are jokes, and Rain is a rather loved joke unlike Mocrap and Meat.

I give up, Sincubus. You follow space logic. As an asian man myself, I wonder if you've SEEN a Chinese girl before that looks remotely like Li Mei, because I sure haven't.

Moving on, I did a piece in an earlier thread that sort of rekindles my love affair with criminally underutilized sexy demon, Sareena. Here's the copy and paste:

Sareena is one of my favorite characters, by far, because of her duality and dichotomy between savage monster and noble beauty. She didn't just "become good"; she has to fight to keep her demonic nature and inner evil in check. She is literally locked in battle with herself at all times to keep from reverting into a crazed, evil demon that kills indiscriminately. Yet she keeps her control because of the kindness and affection Sub-Zero showed her. She doesn't always win that battle with herself, and has reverted to her demonic nature a few times, but she genuinely WANTS to be good, to do as Sub-Zero did and defy her fate, to not be bound by her limitations and to challenge fate. She is beauty and beast in one package, a powder keg ready to explode, and the fact that she is both a powerful ally and yet a dangerous liability makes every moment she's in the game exciting.

I still lament the fact that she is one of the most fleshed out, exciting, and original characters MK has, as well as one of the few shining gems that MK: Armageddon gave us; she was easily one of the better characters in the entire game and one of the most fun to play as. She never really died, but I always wanted to know what she was up to in the years leading up to her encounter with the younger Sub-Zero, and how she would have handled the death of the original Sub-Zero, whom had inspired her insurrection in the first place. She serves as an excellent bridge between both Sub-Zeros, has strong ties to Quan Chi and the early, even pre-MK1 era, and remains, in my opinion, the best MK character, both story and gameplay-wise, to never get the wide-spread exposure she deserved.

Sareena could be so cool in this game, her turning into her true demon with her fatality.

And I adore that picture of Sareena, I hope she will looking like that, maybe you should twitter that picture to Boon.

Wow......3 whole pages devoted entirely to this whole Li Mei debate.

Good times. smile

Anyway (not hoping to prolong this topic any further), but, I'd just like to say that Li Mei is most definitely one of the best new characters from the 3D era. She is full of excellent potential, fun gameplay (great special moves), an awesome look (her primary costume in MKDA and her armor costume in MKD), and a very interesting and well developed storyline that clearly gave her a good fan base and everyone's (almost) "thumbs up".

I love her and I hope to see her return for the future. I doubt she will make the cut in this game, but there is always the next MK.

**********************************************************

Moving on, why haven't we seen some awesome poster or promotional image of Mileena VS Kitana, yet? This is one of the coolest and most classic rivalries of all time!

I hope we get that kind of stuff for females, specially when Sonya and Sindel are revealed 'cause I'm dying to see what they will do with them in this game.

Li Mei's one of the better new characters but I'd still want the classic females, Nitara and Sareena in before her. I think Li Mei and Sareena stand a good chance at being DLC but here's hoping for Nitara. I also think Tanya will be a DLC character.

As for my favourite females, I'd probably say Sonya, Kitana, Sindel & Mileena. But I love pretty much all the classic females.

Sareena and Tanya would be the only 2 post MK ladies that actually make sense appearing in this game, the others really don't have anything to do with this.

Ashrah and Nitara have the age, but they were unknown till they appeared in later MK games.

Has anyone even mention about Nitara yet? I would like to go back and read if there has been but because of the Li Mei debate... wow... I don't feel like re-reading that crap again.

Does Nitara even have potential to be somewhat involve with this or no? I'm indifferent about her. I never really liked her in Deadly Alliance but I didn't hate her.

As a brand new race entering the series, they did a really horrible job to her. Her moves were all right, but the fact that she has wings, they didn't do ANYTHING with them. She never flew anywhere.

Her story just didn't make me feel interested about her. A dying world crashed into Outworld and she needs to find a magic orb that will get them out of danger. The only one who could retrieve the orb is Cyrax because of his suit...

Interesting story? No, I don't like that, so she manipulated Cyrax, there's nothing more interesting than that *sarcasm*

Could there be a chance for her return? If her story is better than the one that she had, she could somewhat make an appearance but...

The one that makes the most sense in returning to this kind of series is Tanya. Someone already got the point that she would make a great character because of the fact that you have the Edenian girls involve with this game... During MK4, until you saw her ending, we thought that she was a good character.

We could possibly see her becoming a betrayer in this game, having us see why she's becoming an evil character.

I really hope Tanya is a DLC character, it would make perfect sense, she is just soooo cool and a yellow girl :p

At first she looked so nice and sweet, but after that Liu Kang killing ending she turned into one of the most evil powerhungry bitches in MK, even more evil than Mileena.

Maybe Shoa Kahn sends Tanya after Raiden to spoil up his whole changeing stategy.

Sindel is my favorite, I think out of all the female characters she really stands out because she's so unique and different. I love the hair grab move and the Scream fatality in umk3.

Sareena I also love but I kinda doubt she'll make the cut.

I think the thing with Nitara's story is that they really played her out as a devious and manipulative character, while at the same time keeping her noble due to her cause to free her race. She is one of the truly neutral characters of MK, and that alone makes her someone that can be worked with and played out to more potential.

In her MK:DA story alone she manipulated both Reptile and Cyrax, abandoning the former when her use for him was exhausted, all in order to do what was best for her people. Noble, yet devious. I think that if they were to somehow fit her into this rehash, then it would have to do with her race having to deal with Kahn and how he took over their realm, and maybe her trying to stop it herself.

Until her Armageddon bio, she herself seemed non confrontational, as she had Reptile injure Cyrax rather than doing it herself. With Armageddon, and Ashrah killing her race, she seemed a bit more willing to attack herself. I don't know, all of this stuff is interesting to me, as it doesn't seem like it's done too often in the world of MK.

The thing with DLC is that they don't have to be involved with the story so that opens up the realm of possibilities for DLC. If we look at Blazblue as a benchmark for DLC characters then we can expect any that appear not to be involved with the story unless the DLC consists of NPC's within MK9's story.

Keeping that in mind the DLC could be any character.

Mortal Kombat just doesn't have very many interesting female characters. The male characters are just generally better; it's unfortunate to say, but true in my opinion. The females that are actually interesting were created too late in the series to be in this game, so instead of interesting characters like Nitara, Frost or Li Mei we'll look at Sheeva instead.

Li Mei: Basically a Mileena without a veil when she came out. Although she did become MUCH more interesting in MK: Deception.

Frost: Female Sub Zero

Nitara: A vamire. (As if we don't get enough vampires in other media)

Interesting? Really? -_- idk man..

I agree, Sheeva isn't too interesting, but I don't think that the "newer" females were much more interesting than the existing ones.

Sindel made an awesome debut in MK3! Mileena always had the potential to be amazing, and Kitana was great back in the day. These characters definately have potential, we just gotta leave it to the hands of the MK team.

I'm getting a little annoyed when I see people thinking that Li Mei is a blatant rip-off of Mileena. No she isn't!

Why? Because she's mostly associated with the color pink/purple? That she had sais as her first weapon? That she has black hair? That doesn't signify ANYTHING that shows she's a rip-off.

Mileena is a clone created by sorcery who has partial Tarkatan DNA. She's trying to take over Kitana's throne and rule Edenia for herself. A monster who wants daddy's attention but cannot get it. Who barely covers herself in the outfits the developers created and eats people.

Where Li Mei is Bo Rai' Cho's student who was also one of many villagers that were slaves under Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. Who fought in MK to free her people but failed because Shang and Quan Chi did not keep their promise if she won, who later turned on her friends in her Deception ending and was sitting by Onaga's side as queen.

Yeah, I can SO see the rip off there.

Li Mei isn't a rip off of Mileena, people need to get that straight. If she was, she would be more like Mileena, but she isn't. She is no where NEAR Mileena whatsoever.

If people are basically going to say she is a rip off because of the colors she wears or her weapons that she first had then that's stupid.

On Li Mei: Li Mei is HARDLY a Mileena rip-off, not even on Deadly Alliance. She had original moves, a COMPLETELY different story and her costumes don't look like Mileena's AT ALL.

On Jade: He story is pretty terrible, but seeing how Kitana doesn't have the Mystical Teleport on her movelist anymore, makes me believe she will definitely be in the game. I hope she gets the UMK3/MK2 female ninja costume back.

On Tanya: I hope she becomes a DLC character, but i can wait for her to shine n MK10.

Li Mei clearly isn't a Mileena ripoff. However her having an ugly face, sais, and in a color commonly associated with Mileena certainly didn't help. Especially when people are still living in the days of pallet swaps when one of the only thing separating one character from the next was color they wore and weapon if they had it.

That being said I don't really like Li Mei either. I liked her more in MKDA but she had better costumes in MKD.
