The faster pace of the gameplay. The juxtaposition of Outworld-y stuff against urban environments. The suddenly maligned sense of humor. And of course, Kombat Kodes.

In other words, novelty, gimmickry and style over subtance.

I was unaware that changes to the core gameplay counted as gimmickry. Other than that, yes, I do enjoy MK3 for it's aesthetic choices.

For Christ sake, will they stop it with all the exclusive DLC pre-order
crap and just release all of it in a DLC pack via the PS Store when
the game is officially released. I'm not pre-ordering anymore stuff
just to get a DLC costume, it's totally not worth it. I'll just wait.

I haven't pre-ordered any special editions either. I've pre-ordered the normal game and then I'll just wait to download the DLC's whenever they're available. The only thing I'll buy, if available in Europe, will be the two movies in blu-ray version and with them the Jade classic costume DLC. ^^

Dude, no one's forcing you to. It's just a bonus gift for pre-ordering at the specific store. To make the deal worthwhile, it will have an exclusivity period but eventually it will be released.

I hope these are all available in a big DLC combo pack I don't really care about all the pallet swaps. I just want the extra Classic Fatalities

What will they be?

Slightly off topic, but I have a question for you guys. This is the first game I've pre-ordered in the DLC era. I pre-ordered from Best Buy because there's one literally a mile from my house so I can pick it up on the release date.

My question is, will my DLC redemption code be in with the package when I pick it up, or should I have received it via email when I placed the order? Thanks.

If it is anything like when I pre-ordered Dragon Age: Origins, then the code comes with the game.

Edit: Oh, and to you guys who want Mileena in her MK2 outfit... Here you go:

Nightwolf says hi.

Also Stryker, Sheeva, Shang Tsung, Sindel, Sektor, and Cyrax.

I already eliminated Shang and Sindel. Sektor gets a pass, barely.

Ok, let's break it down again.

Stryker pulls out a taser and electrocutes the opponent, who does not burst into flame or explode into more limbs than an orgy between Shiva (note spelling) and the Man-Spider from Spider-man. Pass!

Stryker conjures a bomb from out of hammerspace, sets the timer and jumps about 12 feet away, dying horribly in the resulting explosion. Oh, that's what would've happened if he had actually done that. What actually happens is the opponent blood exploding into a mannequin factory's worth of superfluous limbs. FFFFAAAAAIIIIILLLLLL.

Stryker is eliminated.

Sheeva tears the skin off her opponent, leaving behind a meaty skeleton and a comically stupid looking jelly blob of skin with a giant gaping mouth. Pass, but I had to actively ignore the stupid to make that the case.

Sheeva pounds the opponent into the ground in a way that looks comically bad. Pass, because it's still better than a lot of them.

Sheeva manages to hang on, if only by comparison.

Cyrax spins his head around, turning his cyber dreadlocks into a helicopter blade. He flies into the air straight up offscreen. He flies straight down, slicing the opponent into more limbs than are in the Crazy 88's scene in Kill Bill. FAIL.

Cyrax sets his self destruct sequence, forfeiting the player's turn and resulting in a non-standard game over. Ok, not really, but that would've been better than an explosion resulting in an unprecedented 94 ribcages, 14 arms, 24 legs and about 1,834 miscellaneous bones. Good concept. Horrible execution. Fail.

Cyrax is eliminated.

Nightwolf calls down a beam of light that banishes his opponent to the astral plane. Pass!

Nightwolf uses his tomahawk and apparent mastery over the elements to electrocute the opponent. Pass!

Nightwolf hangs on, joining a very small elite group of people with 2 non-terrible Fatalities in MK3.

This is just coming off schmucky and normally I like reading your posts.

This "eliminated" and "pass" crap is the definition of subjective. "Oh, I elminated them so nyeh". I loved both of Sindel's fatalities. Her hair is clearly a weapon of hers, so using it as a weapon is great. I'm not a huge fan of the muiltiple ribcage thing but I love that they explode into bone. That was pure 90s awesomesauce.
As just an example.
But meh, opinions are opinions

But, on your Stryker. You say that he conjures something from hammerspace like that's a bad thing >_O Every character does that in most video games. You also seem to feel necessary to mention that he jumps 12 feet like that's "unrealistic"... considering the context I'd hardly call it remarkable.

I do kinda miss the more humorous fatalities. I like that they are being alot more serious this time around, but I'd rather have some of these funny fatalities than a whole bunch of dismemberment ones that looks alike...

Agreed!!!

And OMG I love all those cute little ridiculous heads. Those pics bring back sooo many fun memories, thank you for posting that.

smile

I used to play MK3 and MKT like crazy (as in: super obsessed), so, I'd go ahead and play against myself with Kabal just to kill every single one f the characters and do that fatality just to see how their heads would transform.

Many hours of double rounds doing the same old Fatality on the 30+ cast of characters.

Not me, he's spot on with how stupid those fatalities were.

For everyone who liked Kabal's head expansion thing, serious question: were you like 10 when MK3 came out? Not trying to insult you, because I was like 17 and that s*** just looked retarded to me, So I'm thinking it was a age gap thing.

I think it looks great, and that was just by a deviant art guy. Whatever guy is designing the costumes for the new game could probably do an even better job on updating it like he did with Jade's retro.

1) Regarding Kabal's Fatality.

Its not one of my favorites, and still, I enjoyed it and appreciated it for what it was.

I was definitely around 10 or 12 though, but, still, even today I enjoy it for what it was.

That would be more entertaining to watch with todays graphics and technology than uninspired repetitive body mutilations.

2) Regarding MK2VSMK3 female retro costumes.

I like the MK3 better. It has more style.

I would so totally buy this.
I like the UMK3 look as well, but there's no reason (besides laziness/cheapness) they couldn't give us both looks and let us choose. I'm sure I would alternate between the MKII look, the UMK3 look, and the MK9 look.

I like the new UMK3 costume too, but I don't know why people DISlike the mk2 one. I agree there's no reason we couldn't have both. I would buy it. Anyone who doesn't like it wouldn't have to.

I gotta say that, given how much we tend to agree on things, if I didn't know better I would think that unseenwombat is another account of mine. But I know that it's not and that's the strange part.

I was also 17 when MK3 came out. Going on 18.

Me too. I see we're both Year of the Snake.
I was working at a theater that got it when it came out.
We would all play it on break, but none of us liked it as much as MKII.
Still fun though.
Odd random fact: I worked with a... *large* lady who got, I shit you not, *several* huge MK tattoos- Scorpion, Shang Tsung, Sheeva, and the MK Dragon. They were each about 12 inches long/wide. She was able to fit all of that due to her ample self. Last I heard, she was working as a stripper. Life is funny.

LOL, yup. If I'd have known, I could've made my username alt-bezou. It's probably our age. We come from a strange time in which MK was actually good. These kids don't remember that, or they were too young like Queve to appreciate the real violence of MK1 & 2 and preferred the stupid cartoon violence of MK3 and that has clouded their nostalgia receptors.

Year of the snake too, only because Chinese New Year was in February that year (so my wife tells me). I was just a few days away from being a horse.

*Talk to the hand* I'm not 100 years old like y'all but I remember and still have fond love for MKII (which, after purchasing on PSN, has not aged well).
