MK's story was all that, solid, and far above average, for long, long before this game ever came out. Even the weaker entries did their part in moving the plot along, and adding more to the mythology and backstory.

I enjoyed MK2011 immensely. It is a great game with an incredible amount to offer - they deserved every award they brought home - but they do not deserve this one. Because unlike any of the game's prior entries (Shaolin Monks notwithstanding, which ain't canon anyway), this one selectively ignores entire sections of its own history, or rewrites them for convenience's sake. The game flat out comes and tries to pass off the entirety of the MK tournament's own rules system as irrelevant and pointless.

If they had just re-told the entirety of the original plot without making a point of branching off from it - odds are it'd still be nominated for that award. This game's been nominated in this category because for the first time, they bothered to capitalize on the much beloved story - laid down and plotted nearly 20 years ago by Tobias - by adding the cinematic Story mode we always knew it was worthy of.

Yes, it's good for a fighting game, but it always was...and more.

You ask me, if they win this thing, they need to walk right up to Tobias' door, hand it over, and go "thanks, couldn't have done it without you. Sorry we buggered it a bit".

Thanks Jaded!

Just to note, my last post, I don't intend to get on anyone's bad side. I just simply explained the fact that NRS did a great job with turning a franchise's questionable story and actually forming a solid story that actually made somewhat of sense. There were plot holes, yes. But for a video game and especially a Fighting game, they did a pretty solid job forming up a unique story.

Just that you like something that someone doesn't is enough to get on someone's bad side. Sorry to kill the buzz and I might just be a pessimist, but after having been on this forum since MKDA and been watching the people on here for more hours than I would like to admit, that's my conclusion. But good luck anyways. Just be yourself and enjoy yourself, don't let people on here get to you.. and try and stay sane. ^^

Facepalm. I knew as soon as I saw this thread there would be snide remarks like this....it's just too hard to just compliment NRS, give congrats and move on.

Totally mature and necessary....obviously

Oh come on, Essy, it was just a joke. Where's your sense of humour? ;)

With all due respect, everyone died rather easily (including Kabal), except for Nightwolf,...so what point are you making? That Stryker's just like the rest of the main heroes? If so I concur.

NRS never said any of these characters were weak, not Stryker, nor Sonya etc. It's interesting how people can pick and choose what fights were legit and what ones weren't, even though they're all from the same CANON game.

I presented my argument with evidence, there's nothing further for me to do on the subject, cheers mate.

really?! wow...well, congrats NRS and kevin i guess.

as for story mode, i liked it up till the end or 'mk3', where everybody gets fucked up by sindel and raiden kills liu kang. accidental my ass, if he cant control his powers he dont need to be no damn god. he was already fukin shit up the whole way through,i know it wasnt intentional but still, then he goin accidentally kill liu kang, aint that a bitch

then they killed my boi kung lao all early...they did my girl Jade WRONG! sindel a bitch for that. sindel and raiden both can kiss my ass.

NRS was high AND drunk when they came up with that bullshit ending. award worthy story my ass..not with that ending, but whatever

legacy, that was good for the most part. not every episode i liked.
johnny cage episode and raiden episode was shit. the part where he steal the hat is probably the best part in the whole damn episode.

anyway, all that shit aside it was still a good game, my congrats for nrs, but they was on that Indo when they did that ending

dont think they goin win but u never know

but i do know they better bring back atleast half the chars they killed, the important half like liu kang, kitana, jade, jax, sub zero and kung lao

they can leave nightwolf, stryker and kabal ass dead.

Highly questionable nominations - perhaps there just weren't better options - but one thing is clear: one's got to vote for Mortal Kombat that's finally up and running, as a real MK fan. After Mortal Kombat's Achilles heels Armageddon and MK/DC, and Midway's bankruptcy, not many would have complained about this what we have now. Thus we should all embrace what we have got and do a little - but important thing. {Vote}

EAT THAT HATERS !

BTW, GameCritics who are almost always critical of gaming's stories , did really love the story mode and made the game in their best of 2011 games list with the story mode being on the good side.

Love the MK9 Story Mode, only hope Legacy wins so WB will feel tempted to do more Mk stuff. This is very odd for the WGA to nominate this - the MK movie was said to have poor story developments by critics yet Legacy just rehashed the same stuff like the movie did (albeit all the other stories in MK9 the movie didn't). But seriously there needed to be a Season 2 before a movie is being made because they need to finish setting up what legacy was going for. Now it's just another incomplete series like Conquest, which Legacy seems to murmer in cheap effects and storytelling, but on a modern level. P.S. The modern mainstream don't care about the WGA awards so the poster who said "the world likes Legacy and the MK fanboys don't" or whatever nonsense you were implying pretty much just made themselves look stupid. And in much recent years, award shows like those on MTV and even the Oscars and Grammies aren't that popular anymore, except within the industry. Consumers and fans typically do not watch these and hence why you hear nothing more about them about a week after they've aired, unless Kanye West does some stupid crap again.

Yeah agree with this

As fun as MK9's story mode was (fun like a bad horror/kung fu movie), no one in their right mind should think it deserves a writer's guild award (or even be nominated for that matter)

Legacy was shit upon shit. Nuff said

Like I said, it's just been a slow year for games with stories.

I mean, they got Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 3 in there, what else was there in 2011?

Assassin's Creed Revelations.

It was also the weakest entry in the series, though.

That also got nominated.
I mean...I can see someone going "Well what about Skyward Sword?" but (ignoring for a moment the fact that every Zelda game has nearly the same exact plot) nobody really quite talks in Zelda games, Link himself being literally a mute, so that's not gonna get an award for writing, and besides, does foreign work, like a Japanese game, even get recognized by the Writers Guild of America?

That being said, Skyward Sword had a much better story than MK9. I actually smiled at the end unlike the end of MK9 where I was shaking my head at the stupidity of it all.

And yeah, I don't think Japanese games get nominated by the Writer's Guild.

Absolutlely, they would have, but they would have been equally as undeserving.

-To the best of my knowldge, EB himself said during a Fight Night chat that the game should be looked at as a "what-if" scenario.

-If you're referring to the MK3 portion of the plot wherein Kahn was able to use Sindel's presence on Earth as a way to step through; that's a different case as he basically uses a loophole to claim what's rightfully his; the impression was still that he shouldn't be able to step through the portal at all without consequences. In 2011, they basically say "The elder gods know the tournament doesn't actually accomplish anything, Sindel's ward is what really keeps him out" - and Kahn can pretty much come through and wreak total havoc as long as he doesn't merge the realms. The tournament itself still had weight and a purpose during MK3.

-Opinions. I think the original trilogy had a great plot, and it didn't trip over and contradict itself at every turn. It's not some magnificent masterpiece, but it holds up.

-Glad you enjoy.

Which was fine and dandy back in 2005. In 2012, MK9 has confirmed that divergent timelines are a thing in this franchise.

MKSM has Reptile, Baraka and Jade killed (optional: Kano and Ermac, too), and Mileena surviving the MKII period, as well as Goro showing up in the Wasteland despite the fact that he was presumed dead until MK4/G, and as a hilarious bonus, Kabal with an amusing texas accent.

If one really wants to, one could look at it as a third timeline, an alternative to the normal MKII that was never followed up on, but it's by and large incompatible with everything that happened after, through MK3 onwards. Ed's statement that it's best looked at as a what-if scenario still applies regardless of timelines now being a factor. I think that's for the best, personally; not sure how interested I am in a timeline where a frontal lobotomy is apparently common practice during indoctrination into the Shaolin.

Besides which, if you look at the references to it in the Challenge Tower, it seems they take it anything but seriously. They did keep one or two items from SM; Kung Lao in disguise as a palace Guard, and the Cyber initiative taking place during the MKII time frame, but I'd look at that as the extent of its influence.

SO

let me get this straight...

Mortal Kombat and it's cheesy, craptastic script nab a nom,

but Portal 2's masters of the written word get ignored.

Such a sad joke.

Honestly, it's not justifiable. Subjectivity can kiss my ass; there is such a thing as stupid shit and this is an example.
