I felt I needed to give my thoughts on the new trailer...

I actually am more pumped and eager for the game. I enjoy the teasing of the characters and the mood of the music to go along with the game. It is a step up from adema's "immortal" theme for mkda. For those bad mouthing the music I just feel that everyone just eager for more news and actual gameplay video and I can understand that everyone has different taste in music. Let me ask this jokingly of course... would you bash the game trailer if it had music from bands like. green day or one republic or evern singers like justin timberlake or even justin bieber... come on seriously guys and gals... it's MORTAL KOMBAT edit the trailer with whatever music you like and but don't bash something that Ed Boon and company felt that the music fit the theme of the trailer....
Well it's time for my voice to be heard about the trailer...

I was very impressed with the direction they went for the trailer. Having the shadows of the fighters is a smart move IMO and we were able to make them out because of their appearance (Shao Kahn's mask, for example). Then tease around with seeing them fight still with the shadows only to keep up with the flow of the trailer. I loved the fact that I saw some ground and pound in this (probably someone has a few MMA moves in this). Then to go and show a few Fatalities in the end, but keep it with the shadow theme was brilliant. Finally we see one of the iconic characters, Scorpion, looking how he should always be... Badass!

This trailer is what I can see the company pushing for commercials and movie previews for the release of MK. As for the music of choice in the trailer, it was okay to me. For everyone else wishing it was something else or arguing about the band or the genres or blah blah blah.... PLEASE STOP IT WITH THE COMMENTS ON THEM. (If you don't like it just say it and that's it. Take the music conversation to the General Discussions.)

While I don't think Deception, Armageddon, and MKvsDC was by any means great fighting games, it had good things about it, so I never can say I hated the game.

This game does look amazing, a true return to it's roots, and will be what we've been waiting for.

1) Never said I hated anything....disappointed, yes

2) I said FIGHTING games. Shaolin Monks f***ing ruled. Bad story, bad dialogue, bad voice acting, but the gameplay and visuals kicked ass.
And it's only 3 games; DA, D and A. I'm not counting SF, never played it, don't want to. Each game made very small, incremental improvements but nowhere near enough, definitely not enough to reclaim past glory. If they hadn't put out good games like the original trilogy and 4 before, I wouldn't be so hard on them.

3) The character models and animation are still sub par. Tekken and SC set the bar high in this department, they should go big or go home. The character models lack any kind of pizazz and rely on gimmicks and over the top shit like flames and cumbersome looking armor. The animations are severely lackluster and don't feel like a lithe, agile fighter or even seem like someone skilled in the martial arts, they feel more like a drunken, constipated biker in a bar fight. When someone like me, a novice in the martial arts, can look at the animations and see that they look clumsy, something's wrong.

In a fighting game, barring actual gameplay (which we know isn't winning any awards) animations and character design are the most important factors. I can't think of any commercially successful fighting franchises with worst animations or character models. And I'm not talking about graphics power, I'm talking about art direction. I'm looking at this from sheerly a design aspect. I've seen better fan art, and while I may not be able to model and render it, I could come up with better concepts for Scorpion doodling in a notebook.

As I said, uninspired, out of touch, lacking soul. I guess when Tobias left, he took that with him.

after all you made some good point. I understand your concerns, but you also should see the good things we have learned so far. maybe, the trailer did't suited your taste and maybe the animations are not as good as tekken's ... but if you are a true mk fan and I guess you are, then you see many positives they have already achieved.

mk will never be like tekken or sc, and that isn't necessary. they tried with the last 3 games and it didn't worked out that great... but now we have great graphics, 2d is back and the game takes place where mk had it's best story.

last point: don't blame ed or the rest of the mk team, which developed the last games, being responsible for the "not perfect" last titles. they had not much time and not the money to make flawless games. now it's diffrent and that's why you should get your hope a lil higher than before. sorry for my grammar :)

while i sure didnt hate it, i felt that this trailer should have came before the one we already saw. It wasnt great but it wasnt the worst i have ever seen either. Nothing really EXCITING in it for me to be like, omg omg omg its MK omg omg omg. And that was the feeling I wanted when i was a kid. Anyways, im sure the game will be great but imo and just my opinion, the trailer was kinda lame. No big deal.

And did someone honestly just classify Soul Calibur and tekken as a serious fighting game????

Hahaha

Actually, what I said was:

"MK still has miles to go before it reaches the fluidity of games like Soul Calibur and Tekken."

And assuming you've played either Soul Calibur or Tekken, and you're not blind or braindead, you'd probably agree with me.

But, then again, I'm known to be generous with my assumptions.

Then go and play that horrible games, what are you even doing here besides complaining?

MK will never be like Tekken, and i'm grateful for that!

MK has its own style and I love this new style, it looks beautiful.

If you kick a boring character in Tekken it doesn't even bleed, look at the new MK game, they are full of badass wounds.

You should start playing tekken and leave this forum all togheter.

In my opinion, this trailer is made just to please the MK fans, to keep them busy.

It doesn't seem to be an MK trailer with international standards or that competes with other fighting games. Remember we still have lots of time for the MK9 release. So anything might come out for the moment. And the rock song is something cool and not MK taste.

The trailer is only for a bit of change and motivation. For the ones that are nagging, stop making a big deal out of it and be thankful.

It's better to have something than to leave us with nothing.

A lot of people don't seem to realize just how good this trailer is.

If you knew anything about 3D modeling you'd know that the shadows like that are actually 'fully made characters'.

They are teasing the hell out of us by releasing a trailer like this. They even went as far as to not reveal scorpion in his new costume for god sakes!

One thing I can promise you is the FMV's (Intro movie etc.) in this game are going to be fucking epic!

Prepare yourself.

Hummmmm the use of the MKvsDC uniform for Scorpion and the evidences of Jax falling in the video makes me think that it was an old version using characters wich models they had previously form this game so I think they were: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Shao Kahn, Jax and... Sonya Blade :P

It could make sense since Mileena hadn't a character model on that game and the other characters had it while Scorpion is shown clearly wearing the same costume, and the silouete could very well be Sonya or Mileena, so maybe they just revealed 2 Special Forces members in this trailer :D
Seeing the trailer again and it looks like Scorpion is not actually wearing his MK VS DC outfit, but a updated look of it. Notice the added sleeves, the belt buckle design, and also the arm guards are different. Maybe a ALT costume for him in the game?

You are judging this game, the franchise, Boon, the developers, the MK team, WB .. solely on a 35 second trailer.

lol

LOL....NO....I'm judging this game, the franchise, Boon, the developers, the MK team based on the crap they've been putting out since John Tobias left the team after MK4....Get It Right.

Bro, this game is coming out in about 6 months. Do you realize how much that time that is to improve this game? You're judging this game based on a couple of months of production and development.

" They look clumsy and look like they're drunks fighting at a bar" Bro that's actually the funniest thing I've read on this site in a long time ago. Hey man, if SC and Tekken are so fucking sick, then go play them. MK doesn't need Tobias, they are clearly doing well without him. Though I agree that MK2-MK3 had one of the best BG and character designs, he's not that missed overall. MK:DA and MK:D are one of the stronger games of this franchise, and they were done without Tobias.

If you're so concerned about this franchise and that you think your ideas are going to bring this franchise to past glory, go right ahead and apply at WB. You may be what the Team is looking for.

This game is getting better by the day, and I can't fucking wait to play it.

I think this would have been a better "reveal" trailer than the first one, but I actually enjoy this one more.

It may not show any new characters, info, or (for the most part) gameplay, but it establishes exactly what kind of mood we're going to get. It has ambiance, atmosphere, style, and sweet, sweet violence.

I actually thought the music was very fitting, but I like heavy guitar riffs as fighters tear limbs off each other. It's certainly a step up from Adema's "Immortal", and even if it's just for the trailer, I liked it. It certainly fit much better than Marilyn Manson's "The New Sh*t" for Dragon Age: Origin...

The interview was sort of a wasted effort. You have to give them props for TRYING to get new info, even if they didn't get it, but it sounds like we're going to get plenty of gameplay hands-on and videos from PAX soon and I can't wait. It's a great time to be a Mortal Kombat fan.

The character models in this game are subpar? Compared to what? Tekken? Tekken's character design is so lame it's not even funny. Even tekken fans admit there are very few interesting characters in the game, which is why things like Kuma and Mokujin stand out.

The character models in MK are ridiculously proportioned, and the animations tend to be really clunky. It has nothing to do with character design.

the media is all about ridiculously proportioned characters, male or female. everywhere you go you will see someone whose torso is oversized or a girl whose titties are 300 pounds

But you're right about animations being clunky. Seeing the last gameplay video JRF posted they could be growing out of that.

The teaser is just that, a teaser. It however fails to make me interested, as nothing from the game can be seen or evaluated.

And if the game is broken and unbalanced again, then all the effort put into a rewamped UT engine, modelled personal insides, rewamped storyline means nothing. The game needs to function before anyone can talk about character, style, music etc.

The proportions in MK are FINE. Have you SEEN how absolutely anatomically absurd and incorrect the character models are for Street Fighter IV? Oversized hands and feet, skeletal impossibilities, dislocated-looking shoulders, ground beef muscles, etc. Compared to that, MK is down-right life-like. And never look at the game Bayonetta either if that bugs you.

And while I love all fighting game, especially the Soul Calibur series, SC IV had extremely generic faces and bodies, and Dead or Alive has always had "same face and body, different hair and outfit" designs that are like anime china dolls rather than people.

The only other fighting game I think you can compare it to is Tekken, who have absurd features like Paul and Heihachi's hair, and Virtua Fighter, which is designed to be hyper-realistic.

I'll take an imaginative, skull-faced, fire-spewing hellspawn of death with a slightly tiny head over the vast majority of poorly realized, generic, absurdly proportioned fighters in the other fighting games.

And concerning stiff animation... this is the smoothest MK I've seen yet. Is it still a bit rigid? Sure. But when EVERY SINGLE MK GAME has kept that approach since the very first game, I pretty much just accepted it won't ever be a ballet fight like Soul Calibur or Tekken.
