See I've always imagined Sub-Zero as pretty pleasant with people he considers allies and harsh towards his enemies. I've never pegged him as this brooding solitary hero.
In fact the only thing about Sub-Zero and Batman that I think are similar is that they probably have a smaller circle of allies than most.

Ok, since when is Smoke the Robin to Sub-Zero's Batman? They're both top Lin Kuei assassins of about the same age that trained together as more or less equals. Sub-Zero did NOT take in a much younger Smoke to train as a sidekick...sorry to spoil people's head canon here.

The reaching with the Bat-Zero stuff (especially Smoke as Robin lol) is amusing, but sadly predictable.

Also, Sub-Zero (like most of the characters) didn't even have a canon personality until MK9. And when we finally get to see him interact and talk, he's not all brooding and quiet, he's actually pretty chatty. Once again, I ask people for proof and they give me their fanfic scripts instead. Yeah no, if this was a court of law, evidence like this would be "stricken from the record".

There are many differences between Sub-Zero and Batman, but I get what you guys are saying. Also, if Smoke is the Robin to Subbie's Batman, then I hope he goes Nightwing in the next game.

I disagree with this bit. We saw some of his personality in MKDA-MKA. But still he wasn't brooding then. He was just shown to be really honorable and actually kind of caring. (taking care of Frost after she went bitch on him and taking in Sareena).

Now I do agree that Smoke isn't his sidekick. I definitely mentioned this in the tournament thread. They're definitely partners in the canon of MK but fans may see it another way.

I think it's just how each fan sees it really. They could be equals, but it seemed in MK9 that Smoke would answer to Sub-Zero if it came down to it, thus me thinking he was the sidekick. I see him as a sidekick, but I could see where others would see them as equals I guess.

Nobody is reaching to make these resemblences between Batman and Sub-Zero at all. Like I said even Ed Boon said himself that Sub-Zero is the Batman of MK. I'm pretty sure if the creator says that then there is something to it.

So when Boon says Scorpion is the best character, is there something to that?

There is absolutely no reason to view Smoke as Sub-Zero's sidekick. And Scar Subby, you only do because you like Sub-Zero much better. There's nothing objective to it...and the interesting (and scary) thing is, you don't seem to realize it.

Why can't 2 people ever just be friends without one being the sidekick to the other? Is this how your own real life friendships all work?

Really though other people have said that Smoke is the sidekick before as well. Hell until this game it wasn't even up for debate. Sidekicks don't exist in real life, only in fiction. I love Jade, she's my second favorite character next to Sub-Zero but I know she's the sidekick between her and Kitana

Edit: Also on the whole "If boon says Scorpion is the best character does that make it true debate? I would say yeah it probably does hold some weight. I'm neutral on Scorpion I don't hate him, but I don't see what's so great about him. I would say beating out the other characters by like forty something thousand plays means that Scorpion is the best character and yes boon probably would say that.

Kitana and Jade are friends too, but at least there you can say that Kitana is royalty and Jade is the bodyguard.

Subbie is not royalty (hate to let you down) and Smoke is not his bodyguard. They're two peers who are both assassins from the same clan. Little difference there.

And I don't care what "other people think". Lots of other people are wrong, constantly.

As for Smoke taking orders from him, If anything, the first time we see those 2 in MK9 its Smoke telling Sub-Zero to be careful and that he's better off sticking close to him. Subbie doesn't listen and then you know the rest...

I never seen Smoke as a sidekick. He's a support character like Jade and Kung Lao.

The only time I can say Smoke was a sidekick was when he was with Noob. At that time he was literally a mindless drone.

This is kind of a good point. I see people calling Jax Sonya's sidekick all the time but they're actually partners. Actually I think in the old games he's actually her military superior.

People tend to think Smoke is the sidekick because Sub-Zero is the clear hero and a main character while Smoke is being peoples bitch but yeah I don't think either of them outrank the other. Not until Sub-Zero became grandmaster at least.

Here's the thing then I won't use the word sidekick since that seems to hold a stigma. However, KungLaodoesn't suck used the correct term. Supporting character.

Kitana, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Liu Kang are all the main guys while Jade, Smoke, Jax, and Kung Lao are the "supporting characters". There we go maybe that sounds better.

Jax is definitely a main character though. And actually a lot of the most frequently reoccurring characters are actually support characters that the story doesn't need to continue. Johnny Cage for example.

The word sidekick absolutely implies an assistant or a subordinate to an authoritative or leader figure. That's blatantly incorrect if applied towards Sub-Zero and Smoke, both of whom are stated to be among the Lin Kuei's finest. Indeed, huge difference between that and the title of supporting character.

Apart from her initially wanting no harm to come to him re: her MKA bio, I've never seen her as an actual interest for either snowman. She meets the first for all of five minutes before she gets Shinnok'd, and then years later the second offers her a place to stay out of gratitude for a favor. I wouldn't define any of that as a proper 'love interest'. Reading into it a bit much, I think. Maybe it's just me. I could see her having developed something for Kuai perhaps, but not the other way around.
