I'm just curious and this is an idea I bounced off with Shawn Kittelson, and he said he'd be down. I figure him and John Vogel could get down and do it, maybe something in the lines of what DK books does with "Batman Encyclopedia" or "Marvel Encyclopedia" where it would detail the different characters with their art and concepts and their story and then some background on the stages, main story, etc.
I'm just trying to feel out there if that's something OTHER MK fans would want.
Main reason I ask is, the 25th anniversary of MK is coming in a year or so. Also, it ties in with the MKX comic books, because the comics don't always give a ton of context into who the characters are or the places, or their importance.

I'd buy it, even if it cost $200-$250, but there aren't enough like me to make it a priority to a mega-corp who owns the property rights.
The problem is that physical books are dead. They aren't cheap, they certainly aren't cheaper with electronic competition and less demand now, and the more affordable you try to make it by cutting content, the less appeal they have.
It's a lose-lose if they aim for large volumes of sales. I'm not upset NRS isn't doing an artbook. I'm more sad that there's no official strategy guide for MKX, but even that is understandable.
I think its best chance is to do a limited run only. That, or only print copies after they're ordered. Neither of those will be cheap.

I only asked because I think there's a very real possibility something like this could come about given how some new fans will be joining both the comics and games, and it'd be good for everyone.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
25th anniversary present...?

Seeing as I have spent 2+ years writing all the known lore down and compiling it like a said Encyclopedia because I'm an MK lore nerd like that, I would fucking pay out the ass for something like that to actually be in my hands.

Yes, I hope to someday buy a Mortal Kombat artbook/encyclopedia.
Hopefully, they make it happen one day.
This book should inklude all the Mortal Kombat kharakters of all times. Specially Tanya, my favorite.

So maybe you guys should join me in asking kittelson? I mean he said he would love to do it, it's all a matter of dc asking him to. I think him and Vogel could get down and knock it out and include both time lines and every character, obscure or not.

I would put a ton of money toward that. That's the sort of thing I'd love.

Only if it updates each time it gets changed around

0
Hell yeah I would definitely buy it. If Street Fighter can have like so many history books and Encyclopaedias, why can't Mortal Kombat. Since MKX is out next week I think its a good time for something like this to come out.

I don't think NRS knows the lore well enough to compile a lore encyclopedia

I'd buy 2
I would be interested and i would absolutely buy it. No matter the cost.
HOWEVER!
It would have to be VERY in-depth. As in 350 pages (or more), filled with all sorts of content like:
The History of MK: A chronological breakdown of all the main entries of the series and spinoffs, including all sorts of Making-Of materials, concept art, interviews, photos and insight on what lead to the creation of each entry.
An EXTREMELY detailed guide to each of the MK Realms, the key events in history of each of these realms, key locations, etc.
An equally detailed breakdown on the various races that inhabit the MK universe, their traditions, beliefs etc.
Detailed info on the origin and history of all the known characters of the franchise, what inspired the creation of each, etc.
A gallery section displaying the visual evolution of every character. Alternative costumes included.
TONS AND TONS of concept art and insight on discarded characters, discarded locations, discarded costumes and discarded ideas (if not all, a BUNCH)
An official timeline.
An index compilation of books, comics, movies, statues/figures and other materials related to the series.
Random paraphernalia collection items (watches, clothing, etc)
A man can dream

Take my money !!!!

Yes! I would buy it!!!
Given how MKX does not take care even when it comes to its own prequel/tie-in comics.... the best bet would be a fan/third party compilation.
Start from the time when Shang Tsung was called The emperor and Sub-Zero was Tundra and finish with MKX while mentioning every bit of retcon, alt idea etc. on the way.
On the other hand, you are not going to get a detailed world, because they have always worked with broad strokes. This is not Song of Ice and Fire with hyperdetailed background info....
Some people would want it to be, but I do not think MK could sustain all of that. Dunno.

This is why when I brought it up to Shawn, I involved dk publishing. They generally do a nice job on those comic universe encyclopedias.

O man, i have dreamed about a book like that. If it includes artwork from the original mk stuff with all the realms, charcters, stages explained id buy it without a doubt. Added oldschool sketches drawn by tobias and nrs, interviews, eastereggs and secrets stuff... Omg a dream come true! A perfect oppertunity for tobias to help on the book, as they usually let him do the comics.
