I don't think Noob or Shang will come back or even most of the characters who died in MK9. After seeing Ed's tweet agreeing with gears developers about having to betray fans a little to innovate and make something new and fresh, I've come to the conclusion that no matter how popular the characters are they may not return at all including the fan favorite Subzero. He said it's best to change than have people bored with the same stuff and move on.
I mean he was bold enough to have all the heroes die except for three of them including the main hero Lui Kang although they have killed him before. I think this new MK is going to be quite different with many new characters and remastered old ones, but i think the gameplay won't be changed too drastically and actually be better than the last MK.

I could be completely wrong though about the characters.

He's quick to say that, but notice Scorpion isn't dead. Sorry, some of those characters need to come back. I say let Shang sit this one out. Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot need to come back though.

NRS made their bed with the story mode in the last game. I'm eager to see if they lay in it or if they once again decide to nuke it with retcons and go to IKEA to buy a new one.

Couldn't agree more. If NRS is going to take the original story and blow it up in favor of a full, modern redo, then I want to see them stick to what they've written so far and move forward from there. Otherwise, why care about the story if every shocking moment is just going to be walked back right away?

I'd really like to see deaths actually have weight in this series and stop relying on the whole "no one stays dead in MK" idea that worked just fine in the early 90's when a lot games plot lines were of the "ninjas kidnapped the president."

I'm not saying that they have to stay gone forever, for the story that they're telling right now? At least keep them on ice for one game. That includes Sub Zero.

I could see having one dead character return as Shinnok's champion, but I'd vote for Noob on that one. He's already dead and perhaps Quan Chi rescues him from the soulnado. I could buy that a lot more than eight zombie characters.

Considering the majority of the characters that died were from the MK3 era, it could be possible that NRS is making room for the next era of characters.

I do hope at least the majority of the deceased characters stay dead. Though some of them are among my favorite characters (Sindel, Sub-Zero, and Kitana), I'd rather they be retired to make way for a new set of characters. DLC can be used to keep more iconic characters playable, for obvious reasons.

Not really. They killed all the heroes in Deception and then killed everyone in Armageddon and then killed almost all of the heroes again in MK2011. It would've been more ballsy to have everyone live.

^They've tried making way for another generation before and it never quite works out. I think if when they make new characters they don't make them horrible rip off versions of missing characters it may work better for them. That said at this point I'm sick of the drastically and constantly shifting roster of MK so I hope everyone comes back and NRS learns how to tell a story without killing someone all the time.

Completely agree.
We should all know by now that a character's death doesn't mean anything in MK.

It's also not a MK without any deaths XD

I don't think Shang Tsung and Noob will return, and i hope Skarlet doesn't, her storyline was rendered irrelevant before she was released as DLC, they should've had Quan Chi or someone else as her master, rather tan just another Shao pupper.

I agree with the rest of the list, however, especially excited for Sonya Blade and Kenshi.

I want Noob to return ;_; Shang isn't really relevant around this time since Shinnok and Quan Chi are stealing the show

What you fail to see is that Skarlet is now free! Shao Kahn is dead and now she is free to shape her own future. She could do anything now! A wildcard.

Problem with that is her ending.Shao Kahn is dead (by her own hands) but she was willing to wait for his rebirth, whatever that means.

Unless something breaks her bond like what Liu Kang did to Ermac that one time.

That's her Arcade Ladder ending, which is non-canon, as the Story Mode is canon. Shao Kahn is dead and gone forever, so the bond is already broken. You can't have a bond to something that doesn't exist.

#3 Scorpion

The ninja's plot of damnation and revenge is one of the best known stories in the MK canon, owing its extended life to a crucial development in Mortal Kombat 4 that revealed his true enemy: Quan Chi! That reveal remains pending in the new timeline, thanks to a significantly simplified version of his saga that kept him an ignorant servant of Quan Chi from tournament 1. It was a pared down version that couldn't owe its in-fiction context to Raiden's time manipulations -- but seemingly used the opportunity to smooth his story arc out. Erratic entry points into the action were ironed out, and the MK4 twist seems ready made to be a ticking bomb within the ranks of Quan Chi & Shinnok's Neathrrealm army. Sub-Zero may be dead, but this time around, we may see another component of the Scorpion rivalry be on-hand.

I think it's time.

Ermac had better make the MK10 roster or I will be most displeased.

He has the potential for his biggest part in the storyline since Deception.

Considering all the deads of the last MK, I'd like to see:
From the last MK:
Sonya (cause she's alive and she's very iconic in my opinion)
J. Cage (same reason of sonya)
Kano (He's one of the best (if not the best) members of black dragon...and I really don't like Jarek... like Kira, it lacks originallity on them)
Scorpion (I think needs no explanation)
Rain (I'd like to see him working alongside with Tanya, but as we already know, they could betray one another and it would be awesome too)
Kenshi (he's awesome but I'd like to see his bio getting deeper)
From mk4:
Reiko (I really loved what they did with him in mka... I mean special moves and costume, but needs a deeper bio)
Fujin (I like Raiden a lot, but I'd like to see Fujin replacing him as Earthrealm defender this time)
Kai (I like his style, but he needs urgently a deeper bio)
Shinnok (it's almost certain he's gonna be back, but please don't let him that weak as he was in mk4, he was the easiest boss ever...so I'd like to see stronger special moves and I think it'd be great if, after you beat him in the first round, he could suffer a transformation and gain a whole new demonic form and become a real pain in the ass on he second round!)
Tanya (she's amazing and must join forces with Rain)
And if it's going to take others mks, I'd like to see:
MKDA:
Drahmin (the oni tormentor rules!!!)
Nitara (I like her a lot, but another new vampire could be an option too)
Li Mei (if you have asked me if she should be back after mkda I'd say no, but she got much better in mk deception)
Frost (I dont think subzero is replaceable, but if he's dead, I think frost should be in...and she's great too!)
MK Deception:
Hotaru (I like that thing about order vs chaos, and hotaru and havik are very good creations in my opinion...they just need deeper bios)
Havik (same reason of hotaru)
Ashrah (I'd like to see her back... further when shinnok and quan chi are in evidence)
Well, I'd like to see more ninjas and some robots, but I think the rest of the list should be completed with new characters...
Motaro would be an amazing sub boss, but if that is not possible, a new one could be created...a giant fat guy similar to those we see on Dante's Inferno or even a female sub boss...a sorcerer, daughter of Shinnok...
Oh...I'd like to see the elder gods as fighters too, it would be preeeetty cool!!!

Nice editing and nice list. I agree with everyone except for Sonya. Other than that, there's been multiple prediction threads already and I don't think there was a need for another one tbh.
