I think we'll be seeing alot of classic characters in this one. I wouldn't be surprised if MK9 is a reboot. The story became irrelevant with Shaolin Monks and Armageddon.

For me, MKs strongest point has always been its memorable characters, and Sonya is certainly one of them. Glad shes back and hoping her partner Jax is as well.

That's what I'm saying here. Armageddon was just silly. The story, in my opinion, has nowhere to go. At least without it looking anymore stupid from where it is. I would love to start over. Back at MK1, with fresh ideas and a clean slate.

I understand I am in a minority in thinking this, but really people, the story cant get any better, so why not start where it was fantastic and do it right?

Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Sonya - the Trinity of MK.

She was the third kombatant confirmed for MKDC and now she's the third confirmed again.

God, I wish they would leak more characters.

Anyway, this is good news, imo. As long as she's as cool or cooler as she was in MKDC, I'll be happy.

Personally, I think she should have been left behind. The entire Black Dragon/Special Forces storyline was one of the major things they needed to get away from, if they are still going with the idea of a "clean slate" post-Armageddon.

It's really nice to hear some news about MK9, finally. Sonya is an awesome character and given a proper storyline she could really shine. As long as they give her the proper look and style to match IMO wink

...As well as all of her signature special movesgrin

Not that I'm surprised. Figured Sonya'd be back...if for no other reason than Boon has a major hard-on for her. But still...

Ugh.

It is not that bad. At least it's an iconinc character that has not been mangled to pieces. Actually if they do something with her it might end up stirring her up story-wise from stalemate "OIA catch-the-Kano". Though please make her look normal, please....

I don't know about leaving her behind completely. By now she's pretty close to being a signature character for the series, so if they are going in an entirely new direction (which I'm honestly starting to doubt), maybe having a few anchors to hold on to might not be a bad idea.

That said, I completely agree with you about her story. It's a stale as the day is long. They absolutely HAVE to get away from the Black Dragon and Red Dragon as well as the Special Forces / OIA. I wouldn't mind seeing Mavado return, as I think that he has unmet potential, but he'd have to have ZERO to do with Sonya and her story.

I said it in another post, but I'd love seeing her come back as a spy/assassin. Like Jennifer Garner from Alias or Yvonne Strahovski from Chuck. She could wear something that's more black and sleek, and she could add some moves like a teleport etc to her standard special move set.

Her story could basically revolve around the idea that she left the special forces and you don't know why. It could have to do with the death of her squad (Jax, Kenshi, Cyrax), the fact that MK has, after all of these years of hunting down murderers like Kano, messed up her mind a bit to the point where she can barely tell whether she's good or just like those she's been hunting etc.

I know, it's not exactly storytelling gold. But it would be an idea that could take her in a new direction and give her some added depth.

Anyways, I'm not thrilled that she's back, but I'm not mad about it either. I'm more "okay, I figured..."

Ah, Chrome. Always with the glass half-full.

They can do whatever the hell they want with Sonya. I'm way past the point of even tolerating her.

And as for Kitana, I'd probably be happier if they just killed her off. Then they just need to kill or ruin Sareena, then I can finally stop caring about this bullshit.

Seems very much in reach, no? MK9 could be the one.....

A small smile crossed my face when I read this on the front page. I'm glad that Sonya is in, but not surprised.

I'm really wondering how they will top her look in MKvsDC, though. To me, that was how I envisioned Sonya to be. It was a pretty awesome combination of the classic tough chick with a nice few pinches of femininity. It's going to be hard to top. As long as we don't get the Sandra Hess-looking Sonya from Deadly Alliance and Armageddon, I think I'll be okay with what they come up with.

I really hope this isn't a reboot, however. I was really looking forward to her new storyline with Jax, Sektor, and the Tekunin.

I love the shorts idea with a midriff. Giving her shorts like Sandra had in the movie would be sexy. But, I'm not a fan (at all) of giving her weapons and gadgets and God-forbid a handgun. As simple accessories in her costume its fine, but not as weapons for combat. Sonya doesn't need any of those, I mean, she already has the power to shoot energy rings, fire, poisonous mist, death kisses and almost fly. Even though she is human, she has quite a bit of magical elements to use for power and defense. Let's also hope characters like Jax loose the guns.

I want to say an emphatic "YES!". Now if I can get at least one more of my top 3 favorite females (Jade or Sindel) I'll be great.

I only hope they keep her moveset intact. I'd still like to meet the person that thought it would be a good idea to leave out her leg grab and bike kick for the mkda, mkd, and mka trilogy.

I'm with you on that one. Taking away her main move set in MKDA was such a horrible mistake, not just for her, but for all the classics who lost their awesome special moves. I hated that idea. It was a completely stupid move. After MKvsDC, there is just NO EXCUSE to not bring back her classic attacks. She was practically perfect in that game (leg grab, energy rings, vertical bicycle kicks+updated air attack, kiss of death, cartwheel, etc. etc etc, just perfect).

I still remember when Ed Boon (in fight night) answered my question regarding the loss of these special attacks, I mean, he didn't even remember why they took out the Leg grab and the nut punch. It was crap. But he did promise they would all return and he kept his promise, so, yay!! (love you Ed!) grin Lets just hope he keeps them intact and in place for future installments.

Thrawn Wrote:

I also would like them to keep a functional military look like in mk vs dc. That was awesome. I wouldn't mind if they made her look a little bit more modest either but I won't complain if they don't.grin

Either way I'm one happy mk fan right now. Thanks Boon and Company. smile

Glad to see you're happy too Queve.

Yes please, keep the amazing sexiness of her MKvsDC appearance but give her a fresh new look (keep the sexy bangs intact please. That hair style rocks! Its her best look ever+the big accessories, hehehe). MKvsDC was her best look, I honestly can't think of anything better, but I have hopes they will do her justice again.

I love your posts man. smile Glad to see you happy too.

The Trinity of MK for sure! (but I would also say mighty Raiden stands right there with all of them).

Also, don't forget she's always been the first female to be confirmed since MK3 (except in MKD, of course) and the one who's always used first for commercial purposes to promote the games in game events (E3, g4tv, etc), shows, game covers, magazines, etc. along side Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Btw, have Scorpion and Sub-Zero already been confirmed? I mean, I know they are practically a given, but, has there been any word about them? I haven't heard any confirmation on either character (correct me if I'm wrong please). But yeah, I guess its obvious they will both be back along side the blond babe.

I've been reading all your posts and I really like your ideas and your thoughts. I love the way you explain your views. I also agree that Sonya is in need of a new direction, I mean, almost all the classics have the same problem of being "stuck" in their current roles that there hasn't been much room for further development. I like your "spy" idea. It reminds me a bit of Nina Williams for some reason, but, it could work. She wouldn't even need to be a spy for her OIA, it would be nice to have her take a step down from the SF/OIA.

There should be some dramatic event that forces Sonya to turn her back on the OIA. Maybe some inner corruption within her group of allies? She's a leader in the organization, so, having her turn her back on them could be one major event that could even spark some potential feud between her and her own best friend, Jax.

Maybe Jax could take over as a force of corruption (after all the hints we got in MKTE and MKA, it is highly possible).

Or if not because of this cause, just have Sonya distance herself from her SF/OIA to pursue a new mission/goal in a different path that has a different meaningful motive. She would still be there helping to save the world, but, with something else to worry about, something even more personal than the BD, TK, or RD clans.

There is so much potential for Sonya to grow in a different direction! Lets just hope the team plays her well. They did a perfect job with her in the last games, but its time to make her move on to something new. I hope to see that happen. grin

But, then again, we also have the whole Tekunin thing going on which, imo, is super interesting and fun. I'm a big fan of this rivalry and I wouldn't mind seeing it continue to see what happens next, specially if the chances of having Jax involved (corrupted and "evil") are still positive.

That's the problem.

If you want to submit any news lead and get credit for it, you have to go here:

Submit News.

You don't need to be a mod to place a submission. You type the info that's required and you submit your story. This you can find in the litte tab named "News" below the big "Mortal Kombat Online Dragon" Logo on top of this website.

Hope this helps you out for next time! smile

Thanks man! I also enjoy reading your posts and have for some time!

Ya know, it's funny that you mention Nina Williams. As I was writing up the spy stuff regarding Sonya, I thought about her. I don't know if I'd want to see Sonya as ice cold in that regard (or in a purple body suit lol) and I've never liked the whole feud that Nina has with Anna.

Now though, it seems like Nina is more of a mercenary, or at least that's the impression I get from Tekken 6 and the fact that she's now working for Jin. Obviously, I wouldn't want Sonya to go that route, though that idea does have potential... Sonya being ex-military, then becoming a hired gun in a Black Water type of shadowy group. That would work a lot better than her simply working for someone in the game, because then she more or less becomes an assist character.

Yeah, I think that you and I have a similar view on this... I think it would be cool to see her as sort of a lone wolf. Away from the SF/OIA, but tortured by some event or set of events. For some reason, I can't remember if the MK team ever actually put a Sonya and Cage love story in to any of the MK games, but losing him is a start. Losing Jax in Armageddon? Losing her whole TEAM in Armageddon?

I'd like to see a story where she strikes out on her own because of this and has to deal with her own inner turmoil over the loss of everyone close to her. Will she find a new love? Will she lose the will to fight? Gain it back again? Maybe all of the death surrounding MK has opened her eyes to the reality that the tournament simply doesn't work at doing what it was created to do.

Maybe she's hired by a shadow government or the hidden intelligence branch of the US to destroy the tournament. It could be a whole big secret mission for her, this of course will run parallel with her grief over all she's lost, but would she actually be able to go through with it? Especially considering that these new warriors are trying to protect Earth?

I dunno, just tossing out ideas! But yeah, I hope the MK team definitely takes Sonya in a new direction. Like I said, I think it would be awesome to have her go in a more "Alias" direction. Colored wigs, maybe a black leather outfit with a zipper pulled down to the waist. Of course, she could have signs of "Sonya-ness" on her. Maybe a small patch with the American Flag on her upper arm. She could wear ring bracelts which do, well, you know...

I really do hope that they take her in a new direction and really give her a story that bolsters her character going forward. Anyways, like I said, just tossing out ideas! grin

I am wondering exactly the same thing. MKvsDC gave us the best Sonya of any MK game in terms of look and overall presence.

Her look and costume are perfect. Starting with the sexy long bangs and ending with the killer boots. I loved the cool straps around her body and all the accessories (tags, collar, tech gloves) and details they made for the fans (thong tan line, etc).

It's really going to be hard to top.

The render might not be the best thing because of how "butch" her expression looks (we all know other renders looks just as weird), but her in-game model and her other pictures (such as her VS pose, her ending, and her render in the special cover+comic) were absolutely gorgeous and sexy.

Sonya looks impeccable in MKvsDC, and I only hope they deliver the same amount of perfection in a fresh new costume.

I know I've said this a lot, but I truly truly hope they keep those sexy bangs. Her new hair-style easily became a trademark of hers (like the thong and the lost but not forgotten belly-piercing). They went with this direction with her in MK3 but dropped it for Mk4 and MkDA. However, you can see in MKDA and MKD Krypt sketches and concept art that they wanted to give her that hair style for a whle. They even kind of did it in MKSM (where there are also pictures of her with her exaggerated bangs covering part of her face). I love it. I hope they keep her hair like that.

She looks very tough, sexy, pretty and youthful. Maybe we will get 2 costumes again, one that resembles her classic style (MKvsDC) and a completely new one.

How do you feel?

I do wonder if they are still going to keep her, err, twin attributes+cloth damage. Hehe:

Yes they can. She's become one of the most irrelevant characters ever. MKII did fine without her, and she wasn't especially central to any of the games since (except MKDA where she became almost like a replacement for Liu Kang, which was a good move, but she's pointless now.)

meh never cared much for sonya. being an original cast member doesnt mean she deserves to still be around. besides the first mk, shes never done anything that made much of an impact on the series, like the female liu kang.

now that shes pretty much confirmed, you can almost be certain jax will follow. hes the only black dude that ever gets in the game beside someone like kai, and u know u wont see him.

but with it being the same voice actor, makes me wonder if this is gonna be another fuckin mk/dc thing. i know it doesnt mean that it will, but still its got me scared.

and with that being said, its also got me wondering why they are using the same actor....is this a sign of a story/adventure mode? bc i doubt theyd bring her back in just to do grunts and screams...
