Will mk ever, you know...be about mk? The tournament again?
ok...So the games been out a while now...
and it looks great, feels great and plays great....
But everything else is down right terrible...
the story was pathetic, most of us agree the comics did are fa better job and the games story explored nothing.
the roster was hideous....and for these reasons, i played the game for like a month or 2, were as mk9 i was playing it for nearly 2 years.....MKX was a massive let down for me, because where does it go now?
Will the series ever return to being about the tournament? Or is it always going to revolve around this idiotic plots with these stupid new kids saving the day in any other way but winning the tournament?

Isnt the MK tournament only held every century or so?
I know the champion doesn't age but everyone else does and that would mean leaving the none immortal/ slow ageing characters behind.
Unless they retcon or convolute a reason not to I guess.
Even though the MK tournament is where it all started I think the MK Universe is dense enough with its own mythology to continue the story without the tournament itself.

The roster is hideous, why? Because rain and noob would have made it 100% better right (sarcasm)MKX has all the trilogy characters that are relevant to the story so what exactly is so bad about in your opinion? (besides Jacqui )I'm not wild about the roster, but I still play the fuck out of mkx , I enjoy picking up different characters and move on to someone else. If its the roster that has made you quit playing then your not much of a fighting game player. Compared to mkx, mk9s gameplay is garbage. The roster and story are much, much better, but gameplay is what ultimately decides it. Back to the point I hope kotal kahns ending is what plays out the next storyok...So the games been out a while now...

If its anything like me, there's nobody in the roster gameplay wise that grabs my attention. Ive managed to find a main still. The roster is rather weak, but I think it's largely due to the standard size of 24 characters.

I Think the tournament thing is done because of the gap in years that each tournament is meant to take place and also because the realm needs to win 10 consecutive tournaments so that would push the timeline like 1000 years in the future to make it interesting like the first game was with the tournament being do or die for earth realm

The Mortal Kombat tournament was the focal point of the first game. The series, Mortal Kombat itself, is the continuation of the story set in motion in the original Mortal Kombat. So, whether an official tournament ever comes again or not, the name of the story of this series is Mortal Kombat, so the emphasis is on the continuing story and not just the tournament. The tournament is over, and the entire structure of it seems to be thrown into disarray following Shao Kahn's invasion anyway.

They hinted Evil Liu might be interested in conquering other realms in his ending, and in Jason's ending they say that Jason could be useful Liu Kang's "Konquests" so they could easily make a game about another tournament, just make Liu challenge Outworld or Earthrealm to Mortal Kombat.

Raiden beged the Elder Gods to change the format from 10 in a row to just 1, in MK9.
Whether that stops merger forever or if it only applied to Shao Kahn, and any new Kahn can try to merge realms once per Kahn... ?
Tourney was only about slowing down the merging of realms, invading didn`t matter. Now they`re fighting over Shinnok`s Amulet, and freeing their friends. Oh, and corrupting the Jinsei Chamber apparently.

It would be a step back to go back to a tournament in the next game, unless it's just the beginning of the story mode and it sets something else in motion.
The notion of a tournament, which started as a simple Shaolin tournament corrupted by Shang Tsung(with no mention of realms merging) in the first game was just an easy plot point for a fighting game. It evolved to be so much more, and it played its part, but it's not necessary to bring one back, or at least make a full game out of it.
Start the game with Outworld defending against Earthrealm in a one-shot tournament like MK2, but then the Netherrealm invades and everything goes to hell, literally.

After re-watching the whole story mode the other day, I like it much more than I originally did. The comics really do fill out the story a bit more, as well as the characters...though I still have a problem with Kung Jin defeating Kotal Kahn.
To address your question though, they probably will go back to the tournament in the next game.
The old series of tournaments are over. With Shao Kahn dead, his bid for Earth has ended, thus there is no need for an Outworld vs. Earthrealm tournament any more. At the beginning of MKX, after the Netherrealm War, Outworld and Earthrealm have a non aggression pact, and neither Kotal or Raiden want to invade, thus merge, the realms. This has all changed by the end of the game though, as Raiden now has reason to take on / over Outworld, and Kotal has reason to fight Earthrealm too.
So yeah, the next installment of MK probably will have something to do with a tournament, even if it is something side tournament-ish like was in MKDA.

While I don't necessarily think that they're going to bring the tournament back soon, I don't think they've scratched that out of its story for good.
They might bring back the Mortal Kombat tournament some day, they just need a reason for it. Where the story is going now, I just don't see it returning any time soon.

MKII threw the rules set by MK1 out the window and MK3 threw them out the window again. If they did another tournament, who would be the realms challenging each other and who would overrule it? The Elder Gods haven't given a fuck since ever (besides asking Scorpion to do something and letting Shao break every rule they have). Outworld itself has shown 0 interest in merging realms and Neatherrealm never needed the tournament to begin with.

Oh so now you like the game? Just a few months back, you said the game sucks and even made a racist topic saying no black people like Jax, or Jacqui should be in the game because if they arent , the civil rights leaders will complain. Smh...

Yeah, pretty much this. Mortal Kombat only ever existed now anyway because Raiden pleaded with the Elder Fucks I mean God's to do something to stop Shao Kahn from assimilating Earth into Outworld. So they said "huh wuh? eeeeh I guess, I mean that's not asking for us to do too much so okay what evs"
So Mortal Kombat was only ever for Shao Kahn. He didn't have to win tournaments to take Edenia or Shokan or Osh Tekk. He just straight up invaded those and merged them.
And again after MK3, Mortal Kombat it pretty much pointless now.
No other realm need to go through Mortal Kombat in order to invade or take earth. Heck i don't even think the Elder Gods of Fuck care enough anymore to even set up another tournament to prevent the likes of say the Chaos realm or something from invading if there was ever a being powerful enough to do that.

If mk9 did do away with the 10 tournaments then I doubt it will come back. Originally the tournament was held once every 50 years. It hasn't been 50 years. Only 25. If it still applies we have along time to wait still

Well if Raiden's ending becomes canon then we can look forward to an mk tournament for Outworld, which is ironic and would be kind of a dick move by the elder gods considering that they didn't give a crap about Outworld invading Earth.
That was Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung's idea. Not Raiden's. :3 And if I remember correctly, Edenia did lose 10 tornaments to Outworld. Sorry, to nitpick guys, I just want to make sure we're discussing the right stuff.

I'm pretty sure there was a tournament for Edenia too, at least in the old timeline.
But in the new timeline, Johnny Cage says at the beginning of MKX that Raiden begged the Elder Gods for help when Shao Kahn tried to merge Earthrealm with Outworld so they created the tournament.
It's hard to tell. Is this a throw away line that shouldn't be taken at face value?

A golden light shone from the sky when the Elder Gods made decisions.
And yes, other realms have lost MK tourneys to Outworld.

I don't get you logic here. In Raiden's ending the EG "didn't give a crap" about Raiden invading Outworld, and as such they only got involved when Kotal invoked Mortal Kombat. This is the exact same thing that happened in MK3 / MK9, but the roles are reversed here.

No that's not what I meant. Raiden did in fact beg the elder gods to make the tournament,Âa but he was not the one who wanted to change it from 10 tournaments to one. That was Shang and Shao's idea after they lost to Earth. It's all at the end of Liu Kang's chapter and the beginning of Jax's.

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding guys, perhaps I should have been more specific. The mk tournament was to prevent SK from merging Earth with Outworld. When Raiden told him that Earth was in trouble because Shao Kahn invaded, they were all like, "Thy will be no fucks given!...Oh btw if Earth gets merged with outworld your fired."
Here's the thing, Dark Raiden doesn't want to merge Outworld. He just wanted to fuck it up. The tournaments were simply for preventing mergers not invasions. I think it was Nightwolf's chapter this was stated in. So for the elder gods to have an mk tournament to prevent only invasion is a slap in the face.

Outworld tournament, giving Kotal his chance to defend against Raiden if nothing else. Which I'm fine with, just....let me fucking play as Kotal's forces in that part of story mode. Ermac, Reptile, Erron, Kotal again.
But unfortunately, due to the flawed nature of the chapter system, if they intend for Raiden's forces to win, that's not gonna happen.

It’s ok. I’m sorry for that huge mess of a post I made. I don’t know why it turned out like that. I quoted and responded to 3 people but it came out as one huge quote. I should launch a petition to update this site. Lol

I dunno, Raiden may be counted as a, bad guy in the next game, so who knows how it's gonna go down.
