On Episode 16:

Great Kitana retrospective. I would have shat on her MKSM & MKvsDC characterization even more honestly. I actually didn't like her MKvsDC ending that much. Maybe out of context yes, but in combo with her MKA and MK9 endings it gives her 3 endings in a row with some 'all-girl' power/team stuff. Ugh...

I guess when a character has such a strong debut like she had in MK2, he/she is destined to fall down in quality sooner or later. She hanged in there well until MKDA (that game included), and then it went downhill pretty bad. What kept saving her overall was that in each of those games where she was portrayed badly (MKSM, MKvsDC, MK2011) her gameplay was super fun. Another good thing for her is that, 2 of those 3 aren't even canon. Though, the fact that they decided to portray her like that remains...

I laughed so hard when Razor presented the possible reasoning why Kitana decided to imprison rather than kill Mileena in her MKG ending. That was my favorite moment in the episode. Kitana knows death is meaningless in MK, so she just imprisoned her evil sister this time round lol.

Btw, Razor struggling to speak was hilarious. Hopefully he'll be alright.

Here's hoping in MKX she gets her 'old' persona back that everyone enjoys. Everyone seems super fun to play as in MKX and if they take from her fun MK2011 gameplay, I have no worries there, and finally she looks brilliant. All this has me very optimistic for MKX Kitana.

Btw, Shadaloo, she has some of the most damaging meterless combos in MK2011. She gets 45% meterless damage mid-screen off of her f+2, 1 string and 48% when started with a jump-in punch. There are two tricky parts in that combo timing-wise, but she has other, easier combos that easily go over 30% meterless. Some of the more common complaints earlier on in the tournament scene were the ones about her meterless damage being too high and lots of players wanted it nerfed.
In case you, or anyone else, would like get more in depth with her MK2011 gameplay, check out some stuff I compiled here from watching tourney pros that main Kitana.

wink

Anyway, another great episode. Loved it! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on her Mournful variation.

I agree @Nephrite Razor struggling to speak was rough but fucking hilarious at the same time lol. it made me crack up whenever he started sounding like he needed to cough and temp would start laughing hahah.

Cyborg, what was up with you this episode? You sounded really down towards the end and you didn't talk for a good hour. Just genuinely curious, it was still a good episode but that was kind of odd.

Also for next episode I wouldn't mind hearing a Raiden retrospective if you guys haven't done one already.

I was super tired.

We didn't start recording until around 9:40pm(we usually start around 9), and we went until around 1:00am(we usually finish around 11-11:30). I was just out of it by that point. I also felt cut off a few times earlier in the episode when I tried getting my opinion in on something being discussed, which will happen in a 4 person podcast where we can all talk. You'll notice I tried bringing us into the Kitana Retrospective, but then a tangent started, and around 20 or so minutes later, they got into Kitana. Then it jumped to Goro for 20 minutes(as Shadaloo pointed out), then back to Kitana, and then it just dragged on for me. I was looking towards an hour and a half to 2 hour episode, not a 3 and half hour episode. I had a 9 hour workday, and instead of taking a nap afterwards to recharge, I streamed MK9 with Dango. So yeah, just a mixture of things. Razor's contributions were great, and he carried it, and Shadaloo and Temp stuck in there when Razor needed a break, they did great. So I hope Kitana fans are content. But for me, 90 minute retrospectives should/could be their own episodes. But that was the anomaly, not the norm.

So yes, that's why I was out of it. Tired, multiple tangents and a delayed start dragged things out, as well as an incredibly in-depth retelling of her history that I just couldn't get into at that point. Plus, you gotta keep in mind that I have to edit it afterwards. Which, after several complications, I didn't get it done and uploaded until 3am. Then I had to get up at 7:30am for work again. So it all adds up. lol

I'm taking a break from work, to finish this last big semester of school that's requiring a lot of outside work, so hopefully the added rest will help to prevent me from being so tired.

Well, don't wear yourself out too much man. You guys have a shit ton of stuff in the coming months to look forward to so if you need to do something like break up the topics to make the episodes shorter, just do it, don't really think anyone will care? lol At least you got to go on a tangent of a different nature last night with the DC/Marvel stuff LOL

It's all good. I won't be working again 'til the end of April, and by that time, I'll be done with this semester of classes. So it'll all work itself out on that front.

Yeah, that's what I guessed. I also agree with Kenshi that you shouldn't wear yourself out too much, I don't think we would mind if you cut it short or cut the tangents down a little.

I vote for a Kobra retrospective. He's actually one of my favourite (well...top 15) characters, primarily because I actually think he really fits MK: he's a world class martial artist who gets bored with normal competition so he starts murdering people. That's straight out of a JCVD movie. Ignoring the Ken copypaste, I think more than any other character a re-invention and possibly renaming with that backstory and preferably the hoodie outfit would actually be a really valuable addition to the roster.

Oh and I had an idea: it's only 9 weeks to MKX and thus 9 Netherkasts left until the big day. So, here's my idea: in the run up to MKX, do reviews of the entire series up to that point. Not massive in full reviews touching on every single aspect of a game, cos reviews and LPs of each game can be done, the internet isn't going anywhere, but just a general review and discussion, excluding MKVDC because that's been covered. You could split it up into four for the last month:
1: MK1-MKT, plus comic chapter
2: MK4-MKA, plus comic chapter
3: MKM, MKSF, MKSM plus comic chapter
4: MK9 and what you think of MKX the week before we take the plunge, plus comic chapter

Okay, you'd have a limited amount of time to discuss the comic and it might impinge on the reveals but I think there's plenty of time in 3 hours and the cast often runs to almost 4 so I think there could be plenty of time to cover things, especially if you cut out character retrospectives, and it would be amazingly climactic and provide a great perspective of the series up until the new installment

I appreciate the suggestion, it's awesome that you are putting thought into things, and giving great feedback. I think I'd prefer to save all of the game reviews until we don't have content to cover. We're in that point leading up to the game, where each week will have something to discuss for the majority of the episode. Trying to fit a game review into that each week, would really just turn each episode into a game review with some stuff on the side. I'd rather wait and do each justice.

However, with that said...

We've got some bonus extras coming very soon. As in, we'll be doing some extras each week, likely an additional ~30 minute segment, in addition to our normal podcast episode and live stream. This segment will be quite different than what we normally do, won't include everyone at once(we'll be alternating who is in it each week), and the segment itself will be in rotation with a couple other planned segments.

Nothing is concrete yet, but we're planning our first segment to debut this week.
